So I've read a couple of reviews from friends on this spot in Kota Kemuning, serving some nice Penang food. Aptly called the Gurney Delight Cafe, derived from Gurney drive in Penang I suppose. We were there yesterday on a sunny day to try out some of their fares, so do check out my simple review below.

Kicking off our lunch at Gurney Delight Cafe Kota Kemuning, we ordered the Chee Cheong Fun to share. Served on a plate with nice shrimp paste sauce, I did take note that the shrimp paste wasn't exactly the colour I'm used to, brown versus black. The taste was similar though, and at RM3.50 for 2 rolls which I requested to be opened up, I did like the taste of this dish. The dried onions and sesame seed sprinkled on top added to the crispiness and texture of the whole dish.

I must say first that my mum makes the best loh bak (My Chinese New Year Home Cooked Dishes) , but the ones I had here at Gurney Delight Cafe did not disappoint. Served with the mandatory "egg sauce", the Loh Bak had enough meat inside to satisfy our cravings. I wasn't too sure the spring onions finely chopped and added into the loh bak was to my liking though, as I preferred my loh bak full of meaty flavours without any extra veggie.

Up next was the Jawa Mee, which came looking quite pretty with the bright colours. The serving was huge for Penang standards, one which sort of surprised me. The taste however was kind of lacking, as I could not feel the "zing" which was supposed to add to the flavour of a typical Penang jawa mee. Probably I was too used to the type some Indian stalls serve, hence the one here lacked in the sweet and sour flavour.

A visit to any Penang themed cafe would not be complete without trying the signature Penang Char Kuey Teow dish. Served with prawns, cockles, and the mandatory chinese sausage ("lap cheong"), the dish came looking and smelling real nice. It could have been better had the kuey teow been stir fried longer to make it drier, as it was a tad too wet for this Penang dish, but no complains on the taste. With enough "wok hei", the edges had a certain burnt wok taste to it, which I like. Probably my next trip here, I might request for more chilli for the added spiciness.

Named the Candy Crushing RM16 value deals, the promo is applicable for dine-in orders only from 16th to 30th November. Each of the bloggers present that afternoon got to try a set of their choice. I chose set D, the mega treat combo comprising of the grilled black pepper chicken, tempura shrimp ball, and a soft drink (A&W root beer in my case).

For a fix price of only RM16, I got to enjoy my soft grilled black pepper chicken complete with rice and corn by the side. On top of the main, to complement the chicken, there was the tempura shrimp ball and root beer drink. It wasn't my first time having Secret Recipe's Grilled Black Pepper Chicken, but I always come back to this dish due to its ability to fill me up and tastes good too. The chicken thigh had this really tender texture and goes well with the black pepper sauce.

Served in a pair, the Tempura Shrimp Ball was a must have. My first time popping these really crispy tempura coated shrimp balls, and it made me crave for more. Topped with a dash of mayonnaise, two pieces of these yummy balls wasn't enough for me though.

Shihlin Wangsa Walk Smile Nov 19, 2013

I must be a Shihlin snack addict, as the moment I found out there is one in Wangsa walk which is so near to my home in Wangsa Maju, I decided to drop by before catching a movie with Janice, the wife.

The perfect snack to have before heading to the cinemas, at least that's what I always do, the Sweet Plum Potato Fries from Shihlin has undergone a "makeover". With an improved recipe to give out that extra kick, the improved sweet plum potato fries is now softer and more fleshy on the inside. Covered in crunchy and flavoursome light golden batter, and dusted with plum powder, do try out this snack the next time you drop by this eatery.

When the Seafood Tempura was served, I was a bit taken aback by the look and taste. Probably I was too used to the japanese tempuras served at other eateries, that the one served here looked more like our local version of the "keropok leko". Crispy on the outside, while soft and tasty on the inside, I did like this dish. Served straight from the fryers, the Seafood Tempura would cater to most diners.

Working just opposite IOI Mall has its perks. It was two days in a row of Shihlin goodness, as my colleagues and I decided to drop by their branch at IOI mall for a quick lunch.

It was my first time trying out their Crispy Floss Egg Crepe. With generous amount of chicken floss wrapped in egg crepe, this rather sweet dish added a savoury touch to the otherwise high flavour deep fried dishes offered by Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks. One serving was enough to satisfy your cravings for chicken floss.

Up next was one of my favourite. Personally, everytime I drop by Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks outlet, this XXL Crispy Chicken dish would be my choice snack. Served whole, with bones and all, the giant piece of crispy chicken is both tender, deep fried to a crisp and smouldered with spicy powder flavouring.

I was there the other day to try out their newly launch dish, the Crispy Salt Pepper Mushroom. Served on a huge platter, the newly launched Crispy Salt Pepper Mushroom came off looking really crispy. Deep fried to a crisp, each golden mushroom is coated with a light golden batter, then sprinkled with some of their signature flavoring. I did like the crispiness of the dish, but it could do with slightly less oil, and thicker mushrooms.

Since we were already at the outlet, we might as well try out all of Shihlin's signature dishes, which was exactly what we did. If you're one who craves for large oysters in every dish, then go for their Handmade Oyster Mee Sua. Served with really large oysters and chicken meat pieces, in a tangy sourish soup, it was tasty to say the least. Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of oysters, hence I just took the mee sua.
