Bitter yet balanced  Smile Jul 30, 2012

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Bak Kut Teh

I hardly eat out before I met my boyfriend. It was him whom brings me to various places trying out various cuisines. Though bak kut teh is not a new thing to me, knowing where to eat bak kut teh was a seriously tough question for me. The reason why we come here is the yam rice, which most often than not, it is either not available or sold out. Though it tasted slightly bitter, it was not dull but balanced. I found myself whacking the soup and asking for refill. The lean meat was close to what we want, except that it was too lean LOL. Texture wise, it was tender and not a sign of being compromised.

There was nothing particular nice about the tau pok and you tiao. In fact I found it very normal. Soggy you tiao and skinny fu chok.

Steamed Chicken Breast

Steamed Chicken Breast

Usually I wouldn't bother to enter a halal chicken rice shop if it is not in the mall. The reason why i was here because my foodie boyfriend said it is very good. I vouched that. Even most Chinese chicken rice stalls fail in delivering decent steamed chicken. Such tenderness was almost beyond me, partly because I have not eaten such a yummy chicken breast! The soy sauce was so flavorful that a slight dip would do.
Chicken Rice

Chicken Rice

The chicken rice tasted very decent too. The fluffiness of the rice was a plus point. Moreover, it was not too sinfully oily and very fragrant. Perhaps I should add rice?

House-smoked Tasmanian King Salmon Eggs Benedict

House-smoked Tasmanian King Salmon Eggs Benedict

When I first looked at the menu, I was overwhelmed by the title and description of this breakfast dish. Being a big fan of salmon, my decision was not a tough one, considering the limited breakfast menu. Plus house smoked salmon sounded like a good idea.

The bread was too thick to my liking. It was slightly crispy but soft at the same time but the texture was not the right one due to the thickness of the bread. That aside, the salmon was beyond me. It was so smokey and flavorful. It was so fresh that I could only wish for more. The texture was almost crisp and fear not, it was not those crap smoked salmon that is generally gamey and urgh... The flavor was unique and strong enough to avoid being classified as boring but not too overwhelming that the salmon couldn't fly.

The egg was poached nicely; the oozing yellow yolk welcomed me with much enthusiasm upon contact. The hollandaise sauce and sauteed baby spinach was a nice touch. Together, poached egg and smoked salmon was good but with the hollandaise sauce and baby spinach, it blowed me. Despite the strong character of smoked salmon, the egg balanced it well. Alongside with hollandaise sauce and baby spinach, the egg did not lose its character due to its generally known blandness.

King Tonkotsu Set for RM29 Smile Jul 29, 2012

King Tonkotsu Ramen

King Tonkotsu Ramen

Located next to Menya Musashi is Gantetsu. Instead of having the same ramen for dinner, maybe it is good to try something new. So we ended up in Gantetsu and ordered the promotion tonkotsu set to share among two. The soup tasted heavily of shoyu and miso, hence it was very salty. The noodle was yellowish in appearance but the texture resembled la mian. it was slurpiliscious and paired well with the ramen soup. The egg was soft and melting while the generous pork slices were thick and tender. It did help to balance the ramen soup and noodles and made us full too!
Gyoza

Gyoza

Our gyoza took quite awhile to arrive, which most likely they had forgot about ours. The gyoza was not as good as the one at Yamagoya. The pan fried side of gyoza was not crispy enough and the fillings was less juicy. However the dipping sauce was quite unique. It did not taste strongly of vinegar but something more subtle. Make sure you eat your gyoza with it.

Spending per head: Approximately RM29(晚餐)

5 pcs soup dumpling [RM6]

5 pcs soup dumpling [RM6]

It is good to share a bowl of dumpling when you are having wantan mee. The dumpling was very huge but the fillings was practically laid flat on the skin. The skin was very smooth and easily slurp it in. The fillings was very crunchy and chunky. I believe the ratio of white radish was the contributing factor. I did not taste much of meat in it but vegetables, which was not filling enough. As a snack, it is good enough smile I would like more meat though.
