Most of us would enjoy celebrating Valentine's with our loved one, but the hassle, food, queue (and nuisance?) would most likely hamper your celebration mood, not forgetting most restaurants which offer mediocre food and price it "perfectly" for such occasion.

It was an unplanned night where we had our valentine's dinner at Speakeasy, located at Jalan Ampang. Despite the not-so-ideal location, I am pretty satisfied with the food and service delivered.

I am not an oyster person. By all means, I would reject any oyster that is sent my way. When I first looked at this Canadian oyster, I was not persuaded at all, not until He gave an approving sign. Juicy, crispy, it was totally the opposite of what I thought oyster would be, which is slimy. The sour Pernod pickled fennel worked very well in balancing the oyster, of which it was one of the reasons why I managed to finish my oyster. It was officially the first place I had ever mustered my courage to swallow an oyster, no kidding, it was that good.

The consommé looked so clear and understated. Definitely a healthy choice but too concentrated to be consumed on its own. In contrary, the quenelle was mild and undertoned the complexity of the dish. I must say it was a very interesting dish with an acquired taste, it might not be your cup of tea.

After the appetizers, we proceeded to the primi, which was this home tea smoked salmon. A simple set up with an artful play of colors, it was appetizing to both the eyes and tummy. Similar to the consommé, smoked salmon had this intensifying flavor that one would usually shiver at the end of every bite. The pink potatoes absorbed the essence of the smoked salmon with crab creme fraiche, and texturized the whole dish alongside with the organic petit sprouts. It was so rich that we felt full just as we dug into less than half of our dish.

And here came the mains. Thinking the top layer was "beef", I sliced it into a smaller version of "beef cube" and commented that this "beef" was so smooth and no resistance at all. Silly me, it was foie gras! The braised ribeye was pretty tender, with slight resistance that wasn't too hard to overcome. When paired with a small piece of foie gras and some mash, it resembled mascarpone on the beef, sans the cheesiness, further muted by the mash and sweetness kicked in by the grenadine.

Last but not least, our dessert of the night. It looked better than I thought so. However I found myself liking the chocolate wipe and crunchy almonds, as the texture of the chocolate rose was too tough and felt like a piece of tasteless rubber.

The night ended well with two bloated tummies and happy faces. This year's Valentine's was good, thanks to Speakeasy for doing such a great job. For the fine dining like experience and the delicate 5 courses above, it is just RM150++ per pax.

Second best fried carrot cake Smile Jul 31, 2012

Fried Carrot Cake

Fried Carrot Cake

Whenever I see fried carrot cake, I would be super eager to try, mainly because I have had good one nearby where I stay but most often than not, I was welcomed with disappointment due to the wrong texture and/or wrong taste. The fried carrot cake was slightly seared but retained its softness inside. The amount of eggs used was generous and tasted very eggy indeed. It tasted very flavorful, mainly because the use of choy poh (marinated vegetable). Every Tuesday night, you will see people queuing up for this fried carrot cake and no other stalls share the same popularity as this one.

Hearthy Mee Soup OK Jul 31, 2012

Mee Soup

Mee Soup

Whenever I am at home, mom would surely buy this for my breakfast. Instead of pork noodle, mom requested chicken and wantan for me. So it is classified as our own combination of mee soup. Sometimes the chicken was tender, sometimes the chicken was slightly tough. The wantan size was decent. I usually have mine with bihun and kuey tiaw so it wouldn't be too salty. The soup was something very unique to begin with. I have not tasted such soup for my mee soup and it was infused with lots of chicken bones (I presume). However sometimes the soup tasted fine, sometimes it was too salty, sometimes it was too bland, which depends on what are the time mom bought it. Nonetheless, it tasted very hearty and I would still eat it whenever I am at home.

Champagne Mille Feuille [RM21]

Champagne Mille Feuille [RM21]

French does their dessert right and that was what I was told. However, nobody warned me about their petite size. On one side was the puff pastry with champagne-poached berries and lemon curd and on another side was chocolate glaze. The chocolate glaze was made up of vanilla ice cream with some chocolate cookies crumble (I guess) which was a thoughtful combination of texture and flavor; smooth against coarse, sweet against bitter.

The puff pastry was the highlight and the size of the puff did not do it justice. Crispy from inside out, it broke apart with slightest pressure, and boyfriend and I had to rush to rescue the falling crumble and scooped some of the poached berries to eat with it. The poached berries were soft and poaching it with champagne made it alive. While the poached berries were sweet, the lemon curd was there to be the antagonist. The balance was good despite the strong contrast that both carried. Surely we can have some more right?

Pesto Capellini  Smile Jul 31, 2012   (Related Review)

Pesto Capellini [RM20]

Pesto Capellini [RM20]

Being listed as one of the appertisers, we should have expected the scaled-down portion but our jaw dropped concurrently when the appertiser was served. That part, I must say, the texture of the capellini was perfect; soft yet holding itself together. The glorious pesto which crowned the capellini was coarse, thick and creamy, providing a good blend of flavor and texture to the soft capellini, yet not too gooey. Toasted pine nuts was an excellent touch with its buttery aroma and crumbly soft texture. It contrasted against the pesto perfectly and boyfriend and I had to fight for the last bite that was left. It was small but filled with lots of effort, be it the preparation or the thought.
