My Favourite Chinese Restaurant Smile Aug 21, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Noodles | Group/Family dining

is there any particular restaurant(s) that you always go back whenever you’re craving for certain food? Restoran Lee Hong Kee has always been our favourite restaurant when it comes to Chinese food!

the dishes are nothing over the top but homey and tasty, wait staffs are hospitable, and location is strategic too (to us la). the new location is even better with ample parking lots! it’s previously known as Restoran LYJ. new name for new premise perhaps?

the new old Restoran Lee Hong Kee located at Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh, a Chinese settlement.

they do wedding dinners too. i’m not sure how many pax can they cater, you might have to call in to check {Klang Valley} Restoran Lee Hong Kee @ Kg. Baru Sg. Buloh

Chinese tea is best paired with Chinese food!

Leaf Lettuce 清炒油麦 | RM18
simple stir-fried leaf lettuce with garlic and soy sauce.

Beancurd Delight 沙煲豆腐 | RM 18
braised tofu with veggies and black fungus.

Sweet & Sour Pork Chop 排骨王 | RM 22
one of my MUST-ORDER whenever i’m dining in Chinese restaurant! meat was solid, taste was great, the only complain is, the gravy was too starchy :/ i never likey gluey texture like this..

Claypot Fish 生煲鱼 | RM 38
this was the first time i had this fish dish! really really fresh fish steamed in a claypot. pretty interesting. the flesh was really soft and remember to drizzle some of the gravy on! don’t fancy the smelly grasses scattered around though.

complimentary plate of fruit to end our delightful lunchy!

all these came up to slightly over RM 100 inclusive of four rice and tea, which fed four of us well, pretty reasonable we thought.

and if you are here for the first time, you might wanna try the roasted chicken which is served standing errr elegantly with its nose held high! you will be given pair of scissors and gloves and you’ll have to dissect it yourself! pretty fun!

i donno if you’ve ever heard of a song, Summer Girls by LFO, one of the line says ‘Chinese food makes me sick’. they have no taste betul. tsk.

Yummy Porky Burger Smile Jul 28, 2013

Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

other than pork burger from Cafe 43 and Ric's Burger, charcoal burger from New York Pizza, and charcoal pork burger from Spade's Burger, there's Stacks Burger competing in Penang's burger scene now!

Stacks Burger located at Siam Road, is operated ala push cart style. seating is available in the shop lot, equipped with air-conditioner (phew!) so it's comfortable to dine in!

menu is pretty straightforward with only one Smoked BBQ Pork Burger, and you may pick to stack on or not. and only mineral water and canned drinks are available at the moment.

you'll be given number cards after placing your order. seems familiar? yeah the previous owners are acquaintance with the bossie of Spade's Burger, that's why ;)

now the owners are a few young entrepreneurs who work together to man this stall. two of them are acquaintance of mine. but rest assured, review is unbiased okie!

Smoked BBQ Pork Burger | RM 8.80

my friend had this, the orginal pork burger on the menu, without any add-on. the burger had a slice of cheddar cheese and a pork patty together with caramelized onions, BBQ sauce, and lettuce.

Smoked BBQ Pork Burger with pineapple rings and streaky bacon as stack-ons | RM 11.30

while i had this! with pineapple rings and bacon stacked on my burger!

i actually like the pork patty here! it's crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. and the pineapple rings added extra freshness to the burger, making it lighter. bacon on the other hand was too thin to my liking, i almost couldn't taste it. and i reckon, they can go easy on the mayonnaise, perhaps apply on one side of the bun is sufficient? sorry i watch my diet :/

if you read my review on ric's burger, i complimented on the patty but it's too greasy for consumption. the burger at Stacks Burger wasn't greasy at all!

however, the price was a lil' steep after stacking-on :/.

they said, beer and burger is a perfect match. what say you? ;)

Yummy Malay Dishes! Smile Jul 28, 2013
Categories : Malay | Restaurant

whenever i am in KL (not technically KL, but it sounds weird to say PJ =.=), my biological OLDER brother (cos someone thought he's younger, they must be blind) will bring me out for dinner. and this day was no exception. he was cracking his head,
"where to makan ar?"
"haiya i anything one, just go wherever YOU wanna makan. i makan jor."

yeah i still makan with brother even though i already had mine at Royal Selangor Club with kaiye & kaima (my godparents). i'm risking my weight you see, where to find such good sister tongue
so he drove around Kota Damansara and..
"aha! let's have Malay food!"
"okie!"
i am almost never pikey with my food, other than smelly grasses. and it has been awhile since i last dined in a Malay restaurant. mamak doesn't count la.
we ended up at Restoran Waneeda Tomyam!

the interior is quite fancy, but we opted al fresco area, more windy.

it's opened till late night early morning during this Ramadhan month! do call +603 61407646 or +6012 2662355 to reserve if you're coming in big group!

Appetizer - Timun + Dip
after placing your order, an complimentary appetizer will be served! it's just timun and condiment. but don't overlook the dip, it's a bomb! i think it consists of cincaluk, fish sauce, lime and some spicy chili sauce cos it's FIERY but berry appetizing due to the sourness! definitely whetted my appetite!

cham, means i would have to eat again =.=

Padprik Ayam
chicken and cauliflower and long bean stirred fried in padprik sauce. i'm not a fan of chicken breast so i ate most of the veggie. berry flavourful and slightly spicy. bro drenched his rice with the gravy, so it must be good. he is berry fussy with his food.

Kailan Goreng
a simple yet tasty veggie dish.

Telur Dadar
airy omelette! it's a MUST order whenever bro is having his dinner here, as a topping to his fried rice! i find it too oily. but guys don't really care muchy eh, eat first think later, their philosophy. tsk.

Tom Yam Sotong
it's Restoran Waneeda TOMYAM, so how could i not order one? doesn't make sense right!

i was slightly taken aback when it's served. did we accidentally ordered clear soup? apparently the reddish tom yam we used usually have is Tom Yam Pok Taek =.=

but don't be fooled by its look, clear soup doesn't mean it's tame okie! it tasted like tom yam but without the oily part! it's another fiery hot dish that made us both perspired! abundant of chili padi! and also laden with sotong lol sotong is my bro's favourite seafood as he's allergic to prawn and crab FHL tongue

i really enjoyed my dinner here at Restoran Waneeda Tomyam which serves homey dishes ala Melayu style! and also had a good catch up with bro! not that we don't talk usually, but you tend to share more insights when it's face to face right? ;)

and you know what, the bill came up to only RM 25 inclusive of three rice (we tapao some for kaima) and drinks! yesh the portion serves up to three person! so economic!

Fiery Tom Yam! OK Jul 28, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

we decided to stop by this Village Fish Head Mee Hoon for lunchy one day, seeing that it has been in our to-makan list for a looong while but never bothered to drive all the way to Weld Quay for it. finally got to cross it out from the list!

it was a scorching hot noon, luckily we scored a table strategically placed in front of a cooler. the workers suggested us to sit next door, which is a more well-ventilated space, but cooler is obviously a smarter choice. we didn't even sweat one bit throughout our makan session.

we sat there for a while, waiting for the workers to approach us with the menu. but were greeted with "you have to order at the front there one". okay so obviously we were first-timer there. cos i saw those who came in later indeed walked straight to the kitchen to order first before finding table :/

there's three main dishes to choose, fish head mee hoon (you can opt not to have fish head), tom yum and porridge. guess what i had wtf

and some other ingredients for you to add on like fish/meat balls, enoki/button mushroom, surimi(s), innards (ewww) and..

fried fish or

fresh fish fillets!

fish flesh mee hoon soup | RM 11
LeeChing ordered mee hoon soup and had fried and fresh fish fillets and pig kidney (ewww) as toppings.

one thing that realllly bothers us is, why Penang's fish head mee hoon is so muchy different from northern region's??? i likey mine milky and served with preserved vegetables! sad this was just another bowl of mee hoon drenched in clear broth! so misleading!

the broth was flavourful according to LeeChing, however not that best she ever had. price was slightly pricey. but they are not stingy with the ingredients. there's about 7 pieces of fish fillet (2 fried + 5 fresh) and handful of innard.

Tom Yum Mee Hoon | RM 10
MAI!

i only wanted fish fillets for my Tom Yum as we ordered one side dish to go with our mee hoons. look at the vibrant colour, you know it's FIERY! the sour and spicy flavours were proportional to my liking. the fish fillets are berry fresh too! but then again, it's not the best. my favourite is still this small Thai stall (at Sungai Dua) with Wang Thai comes close at second!

Deep-Fried Donnowhatfish | RM 8
saw all the other tables had a plate of fried thingy (i didn't look too close sked later people think i pervert) on it, so i asked the cook, what's that they having. she told it's some fried fish. we decided to have a plate as well!

the fishes were fried to perfection, so so crispy that you can almost gobble down the whole thing except the back bone! but at the price of RM 2 per piece, it's expensive lo as the fish is only merely slightly larger than half of my palm.

but i'll come back for the tom yum, at night. eating tom yum at searing hot noon with no air-conditioner is a big no-no.

Mugshot! OK Jul 22, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

one of my favourite activity on weekend is exploring cafes around George Town with buddies!

Henry suggested The Mugshot Cafe this morning, did some googling, knew bagel is what they famous for, since all of us have never tried any, so off we went to The Mugshot Cafe which located at Chulia Street (i call it guai lou street, cos there’s many budget hotels and travel agency catered for backpackers). we had to quint our eyes to spot this little cafe, as there’s no obvious signage, the only useful direction tip is, it’s located beside Rainforest Bakery!

it was a late afternoon, and business was brisk!

five of us had to squeeze ourselves around one small table. i love the vibe here, berry lively and humble!

as soon as we were seated, we were told that bagels were sold out! what a damper! we still stayed on nonetheless, to try out other items on the menu.

the wooden tables and chairs remind us of those we used to use during primary school! nostalgic muchy!

remember not to ask “can i have the menu please”, because there’s a giant one in front of you!

i giggled when i overheard someone asking..

Yogurt with Walnuts & Raisins | RM 10

my friends (both guy and girl) commented that the yogurt was toooo sour for their liking! i took a spoon in, and find it’s actually okay. you see, taste is really a berry subjective thing!

it’s sour but not to the extent kenot tahan. honey is available at disposal anyway. those you bought at supermarket aren’t that sour because they are laden with sugar! The Mugshot Cafe makes their yogurt in house! if you’re lucky you might get to see the execution in the shop!

Latte | RM 10

my cuppa latte with failed coffee art {Penang} The Mugshot Cafe @ Chulia Street
i don’t think their coffee was great.. but i am not even a coffee person to begin with, so don’t take my words seriously.

Muffin with Cream Cheese & Smoked Salmon | RM 10

freshly baked muffin (instead of bagel sob sob) paired with a cream cheese and smoked salmon. however, the salmon were too thin, we hardly could taste it if it’s eaten as a whole. slightly thicker salmon and it’d be perfect!

Apple Crumbles Pie | RM 5

pie were great! not cloying at all!

The Mugshot Cafe is a great place for brekkie, and yum cha as the ambiance is rather relaxing! not satisfying enough for main meal i reckon. i am an ant with HUGE appetite! certainly can’t patronize frequent, as the pricing was quite steep for students. :/
