Coconut Jelly! Smile Aug 26, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung | Desserts

C spotted a coconut jelly banner while we were on our way home, after we were done with the book-shopping! she insisted we pull over to have a look. “it’s now or never”, she said sternly.

we actually stumbled upon that road by chance. she tried to locate it for a few times before this but to no avail. i must be her lucky star that day hehe

anyway, back to Joez Coconut.

cute lil’ sign showing you the direction of its shop.

we knew we were at the right way when we saw this banner! yes! too ecstatic as it’s just another stupid searing hot day!

cooling refreshing coconuts, come to mama {Penang} Coconut Jelly @ Joez Coconut, Dato Keramat Road

he’s preparing coconut shake for the customer. i heard that the coconut shake was somehow too sweet. luckily we didn’t buy it!

Coconut Jelly | RM 3.80
i bought two coconut jellies because i know one was certainly not enough. i shared them with my homie too. well, good thing is meant to be shared {Penang} Coconut Jelly @ Joez Coconut, Dato Keramat Road

i’m so used to springy jelly so i don’t quite like the texture. it’s mushy and wobbly. if you’re lucky to get a young coconut, you can scrap the flesh to eat together with the opaque soft jelly, like what i did with one. the other one was unfortunately an old folk, the flesh was thick and stubborn (too hard to scrap off).

coconut jelly is the best dessert to devour on unforgiving scorching hot days don’t chu agree! i could actually feel the coolness travels down my digestive tract!

oh do you know that the jelly is made in the coconut itself? unlike how we make our konnyaku jelly where we pour the mixture into moulds and let them chill and set. here at Joez Coconut, the coconut (outer husk removed) is first roasted in the oven and then chilled in cooler room. and that’s how the jelly formed from within! ingenius innit?

no addictive or artificial chemical is added so the coconut bought must be kept in refrigerator and is best to consume within 3 days.

for those in KL, they has got a branch at KL Sentral Retail Kiosk, in front of CIMB Bank!

Dessert Smile Aug 22, 2013

my friend & i chanced upon this dessert place, Sweet Hut while we were on our way home after berbuka puasa at Starz Diner Hard Rock Hotel. we had a dessert each and we actually thought Sweet Hut fairs better than some of the dessert chain out there. one friendly lady, Zenny, approached us, gave a brief introduction on the shop and some of the desserts. Sweet Hut was a really new addition at Precint 10 then. and she extended the invitation to the grand opening of Sweet Hut to us once she found out we are bloggers.

so on the auspicious day, POP! Sweet Hut officially joined the food scene in Penang! it’s the first outlet here, but i learnt that there’s 13 other outlets in Klang Valley and Malacca.

Papaya Milk Snow Ice | RM 9.90

papaya is a rare flavour for shaved ice i would say as i don’t see other dessert shops serve this! Papaya Milk Snow Ice is new on the menu! and yesh, Durian Snow Ice is available too, of course!

i guess this Snow Milk will be the best dessert on hot day! and look, fresh papaya cubes on the side {Penang} Desserts @ Sweet Hut, Precint 10

Steam Aloe Vera with Egg White and Papaya (cold) | RM 12.80
one of the dessert that i like to diy at home is 雪耳木瓜糖水 for youknowhat purpose. but so far i don’t see any positive effect =.=.

anyway, Sweet Hut made a twist on the classic tong sui! whole halved papaya is steamed together with egg white and aloe vera cubes. super nourishing dessert i would say. though i wish they use almond pudding instead of egg white. Zenny later explained egg white is used because not all like the taste of almond. but i thought they can add an almond option on the menu, for almond lovers like me!

translucent aloe vera cubes add additional sweetness to the dessert. however, the papaya itself is already sweet enough, so you might find this dessert slightly too sweet for your liking. the sweetness is just nice to me though.

fyi, all of the dessert at Sweet House DO NOT contain artificial sugar or flavouring!

Mango & Durian Pancakes (2 pcs) | RM 9.90
rich cream and fruit encased in a thin pancakes!

i absolutely adored the Durian Pancake! Sweet Hut is really generous with the durian filling as you can see! unlike some other shops which has more cream than durian in it :/

daddy will LOVE it for sure! gonna bring him to try it in Malacca!

Coconut Pudding with Caramel Pudding | RM 12.80

this is one of my favourite dessert at Sweet Hut! the caramel pudding and coconut pudding (sink at the bottom) and coconut milk just complement each other berry well. both puddings are smooth and soft! you can also have your coconut pudding with ice cream!

if you notice, Sweet Hut actually adds fresh-cut fruits in every dessert dish! a way to make you eat REAL fruit!

Baked Marquis Chocolate Pudding with Cookies Ice-Cream | RM 12.80
you’ve got to wait 15-20 mins for preparation. the wait is totally worth it i assure you, if you are a chocolate person la! warm dark chocolate lava oozes out the second you cut it open. the pudding was moist and the texture was just right, best paired with the ice cream! and the fruits at the side, dip them with the choco lava and eat it ala fondue style {Penang} Desserts @ Sweet Hut, Precint 10

this dessert is 心太软 in Chinese which reminds me of Richie Ren, 心太软 was the first ever song i sang in Karaoke! #facepalm. it’s a hit that time okie!

ooh la la!

no wonder it’s in the Top 10 Chart!

Milk Almond Pudding and Mango Sago Pomelo Soup | RM 8.90
{thing that makes me smile} the heart jelly {Penang} Desserts @ Sweet Hut, Precint 10

i love that it’s not overly sweet at all. and almond actually goes well with mango too! sago bits and pomelo pulps added different texture into the dessert! this is on their Top 10 list too!

Steam Red Dates White Fungi Papaya Coconut Soup (hot) | RM 9.80
i love everything with sea coconut! but too bad, it’s too sweet for my liking.

Pork Burger OK Aug 22, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

it was one of those day that we had no freaking idea where to have lunchy, so we just shoved the chore to CC, and he suggested ric’s burgers! as his sister said it’s not bad..

all of us have not tried is so this option got our consent nods.

previously, it’s only a vendor at Jelutong’s pasar malam, so apparently their business was good that they can afford shop rental now! ric’s burgers is now located at The One, a fairly new commercial property at Bayan Lepas area.

i thought the frontal of the shops here looks cute especially the balcony!

instead of using a boring ‘PUSH’ sign, their hand drawn version is cuter, no?

the interior is rather unpolished and rustic. we opted the bar seating, to scrutinize see the chef’s in action while waiting for our burgers.

but before you can sit, order your burger & pay at the counter first.

there’s only ONE item on the menu, i.e. oink oink burger! you can of course customize your bun (original, cheeseburger or rice burger!) and your topping (cheese, egg, bacon and patty) at additional cost. you can also make it a meal where your burger comes with a drink and hand-cut fries!

oink oink burger with additional bacon & cheese | RM 8

my oink oink burger had caramelized onion, bacon, cheddar cheese, pork patty, lettuce and house sauce. usually, the burger’s patty we had was rather soft, this on the other hand had a crisp outer layer, giving the whole burger a different texture. we do agree that the burger was tasty, but oily to our liking, like oil literally dripping off my burger, kinda put me off my appetite a little :/

my friend made it a meal with her oink oink burger which came with an additional egg! house fries were slightly charred and soggy (which reminds me of Cele the BlabberBee! she’s the only one who adores soggy fries =.=). i like my fries crisp!

you may wanna try ric’s burgers’ if you don’t mind the oily part (and addtional calorie).

Charcoal Mushroom Burger OK Aug 22, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches | Group/Family dining

i donno do you noticed or not, so many many burger joints are mushrooming out of a sudden, be it in Penang or Klang Valley! and that perpetual queue at myBurgerLab @ Seapark is phenomenal, i have yet to try it out myself though. the only eatery that requires queuing in Penang is Nasi Kandar Beratur, there’s always a queue outside the stall all the time. i have tried their nasi kandar, but i thought it’s just so so, certainly didn’t worth the queue as i can easily just walk in to any other nasi kandar stall and have the same plate of nasi =.=

i know there’s other stalls in Penang that requires long queue too like the famous cendol cart, but i think Nasi Kandar Beratur represents Penang better.

okay the title says burger so let’s continue our burger talk!

as i’m saying, more and MORE burger joints pop up out of nowhere! in Penang there’s Marshall’s burger, 43 Cafe, Ric’s Burger, Andy Warlord, Pos Burger and etc etc! burger fever, no?

today, i’ll be introducing another burger joint in Penang - Spade’s Burger!

what’s so special about Spade’s Burger is, other than pork and chicken burger which are already so overly concentrated in Penang’s burger scene, they serve Mushroom Burger! a-ha! i bet it’s something new in Penang!

Shroomception

the name is apparently inspired by inception =.=

this mushroom burger had stir-fried shiitake & enoki served on a deep fried panko-crusted portobello sealed with a slice of cheddar cheese (the enoki and shiitake were placed on the cheese for picture purpose here), on a bed of grilled cherry tomatoes and lettuce!

i love the earthy flavour from the portobello mushroom and the panko crumbs sealed the flavour and juice within nicely, making it a really juicy and delicious!

however, mushroom burger is not recommended for take-away as the panko crust will turn soggy, ruining its original taste and texture.

Porky Pair | RM 9.90

if you’re a meaty burger, you might prefer this pork burger, named after pairing the pork patty with pork bacon and also the poker hand of a “pair”!

personally, i find the pork patty a little dry, and lack of seasoning hence bacon’s is dominating the whole pork burger’s flavour. perhaps the marination wasn’t done nicely. and also it’s better if the cheese was grilled together with the patty at final stage so that it’s “melted, smooth and creamy” as it claims on the banner! but i do likey the crispiness of the bacon!

there’s a Full House of Pork | RM 15.90 version for people with bigger appetite!

Queens of Spade's | RM 15.90

this chicken burger featuring double chicken thigh, double cheddar and double bacon strips!

double the patty, double the delight, eh?

this chicken burger was also a hit among us! unlike pork burger, this was done in perfection! the thight was juicy and delectable! just the way i wanted it to be {Penang} Charcoal Mushroom Burger @ Spades Burger, Pekaka Square

oh did i mentioned that the burger charcoal bun and orangey patty sauce are house made? {Penang} Charcoal Mushroom Burger @ Spades Burger, Pekaka Square

there’s also a scaled down version Spade’s Hot Chick | RM 9.90 for people with smaller appetite!

Spade’s Burger is situated at Pekaka Square, few shops away from Maxim Dim Sum ( which me no likey btw {Penang} Charcoal Mushroom Burger @ Spades Burger, Pekaka Square ). only opens at night 1830 – 2300 (closed on Thrusday).

locating the shop might need some effort as there’s no any signage at the frontal of the shop, but then you should be able to spot it from afar as this huge red banner will be placed in front of the shop!

Dessert! OK Aug 22, 2013

Categories : Chinese

yesterday while the boyfie and i was doing our daily before-bed ritual – boil porridge (煲电话粥), he was telling there’s influx of some new blood in the office. one of them is this lass from Penang. and she told the boyfie that, eating “plant” is a hit now in Penang which amused the boyfie. he thought i have never heard of it. oh please, he must have forgotten what i do part-timely. *roll eyes*

in fact i have actually visited the dessert shop. and yesh that pot of plant is yummy. to be exact, the soil is yummy.

hereby attached the visual evidence.

it was HuiKee’s big day so we together with SeakFen had dinner at Who’s Bryan before adjoining to Fa Guo San for dessert! both located at All Seasons Place, Air Itam.

it was my first time there, and i’m surprised at how happening All Seasons Place is! beside Who’s Bryan & Fa Guo San, there’s also Chatime, Fruuze Frozen Yogurt, Pappa Rich, James Foo Western Food, Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks, and Winter Warmers, just to name a few. you can view all the food and beverages available at All Seasons Place here!

Lotus Flower + Rose Flower Scented Tea | RM 14.90

after a heavy dinner, all we wanted to drink is tea! to wash down the greasiness and guiltiness :/. we ordered a pot of Lotus Flower + Rose Flower Scented Tea which is said to strengthen one’s body immune system and improve complexion.

the tea itself is fragrant but tasteless, you may wanna add in some honey for a little sweetness. hot water is refillable to our delight! we shamelessly refilled at least 5 rounds {Penang} Fa Guo San 花果山 @ All Seasons Place, Air Itam until we felt embarrassed to keep excuse me-ing the servant :/

Passion Fruit Crumble Cheese Cup | RM 11.90
this is the lil’ flower pot that everyone else are raving about! so creative kan the presentation! the sole edible part of this dessert is the soil! yesh that black crumbles thing!

we were glad that we ordered passion fruit cos it’s light and refreshing! this crumble cheese cup was made up of cream cheese and berry soft and moist sponge cake, and right amount of sourness! which neutralized the heavy dinner we just had!

i highly recommended this dessert! it’s suitable even for people who doesn’t have a sweet tooth!

you may also opt for other flavours like apple, blueberry, choc mix nut & orange mix nut (for more texture), banana, cranberry and vanilla white choc!

Mango Honey Toast | RM 17.90

we were all O.O when it’s served! holy cow how come so HUGE one!
toast box filled with toast stick topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, mango cubes, studded with berries and drizzled with mango sauce!

wait staff helped to slice open one side of the toast box..

so that we could easily take out the toast stick. how thoughtful of them! the toast sticks tasted like roti kok (neh those harden sweeten roti), but this is more buttery fragrant and slightly sweeter. we actually had a hard time finishing the toasts. but we managed to, gradually, over a loooong gossiping tête-à-tête session. that explains why we refilled our tea that many times.
