Goh Kaki OK Dec 28, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Noodles | Juices / Bubble Tea / Tea / Yogurt

Mid of this month we had a monthly labmates outing again! together we barbeque-ed, visited Ernest Zacharevic’s murals and cycled around George Town!

This time we visited this fairly new (then) cafe at Bishop Street!

GohKaki is ‘kaki lima’ / five feet way / corridor in Hokkien where people passes by or play badminton or park their bikes.

GohKaki Cafe is situated along the same street as The Cruise Steak House. it’s not that hard to locate the facade. however parking space is limited on weekday. it’s a busy street with many banks in vicinity. we went on a Sunday, the street was clear. #WIN.

sight from the entrance

Penang Ideology | RM 8.90
GohKaki Ice Nutmeg Milk.

we thought the milk is overpowering. it almost tasted like milk than nutmeg.

Still Black | RM 5.90
GohKaki DIY Kopi

Say No | RM 5.90
Chocolate Coffee

Wait staff told us the meaning behind this beverage. The choco wrapped in cold wrapper symbolizes coins which is ‘lui’ in Hokkien. And the drink is choc kopi. Say No to Kopi Lui. Get it?

Sambal Xia Mi Kaki Ku | RM 8.90
Cute right the turtle miku!

This’s the right way of eating it, spread the sambal in between the miku. My the other labmate who ordered the same dish had it ala steak style, cut the bun into small pieces and dipped in sambal. Lol. Eh if it’s me, I prolly will do the same too :/.

Wedding Field | RM 12.90
Belacan Rice, Chicken Meat with Sauce, Green Apple, Cucumber, Onion, Chilli & Dried Shrimp

This was what I had. So many thing going on the plate. I have a spoon of rice followed by strips of green apple alternated with cucumber. Pretty refreshing yet tasty dish I reckon.

Cheese Tic Tac Toe | RM 7.90

I must say the proprietor is creative with the dishes plating and name.

My dining partners were pretty fail in drawing cross and circle :/

the food ain’t its main attraction, the ambiance is. so i reckon it’s a place where you can have a tête a-tête with your besties over cuppa teas or coffee! if you’re there during weekend, you can even have some games which people used to play at GohKaki

Pizza & Burger OK Dec 28, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

i haven’t been to New York Pizza since ages. so it’s a nice revisiting when they invited a bunch of bloggers for a food review on their new item on the menu, which is the Charcoal Burger! you can either opt for a chicken or the beef patty. oh they do delivery too! call +604 6584640 to enquire and order!

i flipped through my old archives, and this was exactly how i described the interior of New York Pizza.

‘..kinda rustic, unpolished, simple and errr bold…’

i still felt the same…

this time there’s more posters on the wall.

the preparation desk. that chap clad in red and white at the back is the louban!

Chicken Charcoal Burger | RM 10 (set)
the set comes with a glass of soft drink and fries. chicken breast meat, a slice of cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato slices are sandwiched between two charcoal bun. the patty was flavourful and juicy. and the black buns tasted exactly like normal white buns but somewhat more fragrant and sweet (?). the charcoal buns are made in house!

posted this photo on facebook and my friends thought it looked scary wtf. black is the it colour what do they know.

this introductory promotion is valid till 31st of March! so be quick ya!

Beef Charcoal Burger | RM 10 (set)
comes with soft drink & fries

if you prefer red meat, there’s beef patty for you!
equally tender and juicy.

we were also served some of the other items on the menu!

Fried Platter | RM 19.60
assorted fried stuff with a mayo dip which has nothing to shout about.

Cheesy Garlic Bread | RM 8.00
thin and crispy garlic bread. i was so used to thick garlic bread so i didn’t aware that this was actually bread when it’s served =.=

BBQ Wings | RM 5.60 (S) RM 10.50 (R)

Baked Macaroni Carbonara | RM 12.80

creamy macaroni covered with cheese, ham and mushroom.

Beef Pepperoni | RM 21 (R)
chicken/beef pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, BBQ sauce on a thin crust.

BBQ Chicken | RM 21 (R)
chicken chunks, onion, pineapple, mozzarella cheese, BBQ sauce on a thin crust.

all the sauces are made from scratch as well. kudos to them for their efforts!

Tuna Delight | RM 23 (R)
tuna, green pepper, onion, pineapple, mayonnaise, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese on original crust.

hokkien mee! OK Nov 30, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles

i learnt about this 桥头 hokkien mee from a Singapore foodie channel. the host, which i forgot the name highly recommended it. and i have been pestering my friend bring me there before i head back to Malacca.. and so one fine day, he did!

to be honest, i highly anticipated it cos it's strongly recommended, although my friend thought it's just so-so. and turned out that, he's right about it. the broth no doubt is very fragrant and flavourful, but i thought it lacks the wow factor. do remember to add in the chili sauce, available at disposal on the table, it provides additional kick to the broth!

German & European Bistro OK Nov 30, 2013
Categories : German | Bar & Pub | Steaks / Chops

we had a guest visiting Penang some time ago! she wanted to try the pork knuckle at Ingolf’s badly. but we didn’t want to put up with the jam. we would have starved to dead if we were to travel all the way to Tanjung Bungah. imagine the jam. no thanks!

so we made do with Berlin’s Bier Houz which located just 10 mins away! so convenient and confirm no traffic jam.

ambience is relaxing with pop songs playing at the background. apparently it’s where working adults love to hang out after duty. enjoying a pint (or two) of quality German beer during happy hour over tittle-tattling. prolly about their moronic bossie

the aged menu

they offer a wide variety of dishes, from salads to pasta to pork knuckle! for drinks, you can opt for either draught bier or juices or cocktails or liquor!

left to right: Ice Blended Chocolate | RM 10; Hot Cappuccino | RM 6; Hot Chocolate | RM6; Ice Blended Latte | RM 10
drinks were all decent. i was overjoyed to see generous amount of whipped cream! what diet? fuck it!

will bring the boyf here next time as he’s an German beer enthusiast and i’ll update you guys after that!

btw, pardon the overexposure washout snapshots ya. it’s dark and i have no choice but to fire the flash.

Pasta alla Carbonara | RM 18.80
Fettuccine pasta drenched in a pool of rich cream sauce with bacon, peper flavoured ham and mushroom.

my friend commented it’s mediocre. we can easily whip this up at home ourselves.

Pasta all' Arrabbiata | RM 25.80
i usually go for aglio olio or tomato sauce based pasta instead of cream.

this al dente pasta had the right hint of spiciness which really spiced up my palate! living up its name huh (arrabbiata means spicy in Italian) shrimps were berry huge and fresh!

Double Cheese Pork Burger | RM 16.80
home made pork patty sandwiched between sesame bun with two slices of cheese and some green, served with a side of German frites. the patty was thick however it’s tasted a tad bland for our liking.

Berlin's Special Pork Ribs | RM 27.80
premium ribs richly seasoned with spices and slow-smoked, served on a bed of mashed potatoes and vegetables. the dark strips are actually black fungus, surprisingly. and something lagi surprising was, the mashed potatoes had some minced meat hidden in it, giving the mud a rough texture, which is alright to me. it’s good to try something different ma.

this is definitely value for moolah, three HUGE chunks of ribs which its meat were berry tender and juicy. it would taste better if they were seasoned longer. the flavour was all at the surface, within the meat, it’s bland. same thing like the burger

aftermath! hehe

Dessert! OK Nov 30, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Café | Juices / Bubble Tea / Tea / Yogurt | Sweets/Snack

Brown Pocket is a dessert place located at 6th floor of Gurney Paragon which specializes in coffee, chocolate, and dessert, they claim. Brown Pocket has just opened its door yesterday hence all the flower baskets. yala we manyak kiasu :/

I past by Brown Pocket the week before, and was attracted by its one of a kind interior design. glad that I managed to pay a visit the following week!

oh I forgot to ask the proprietor why Brown Pocket, not Red/Black/Pink (hehe) Packet though

okay now I know why it’s brown pocket! it refers to this gunny sack! where all the menu is placed. I think I forgot to put back the menu le.. :/

the magazine-like menu. kinda straight-forward.
Brown Pocket implements order-and-pay-upfront, and a number will be assigned to you.

the whole café is decorated in earth tone, with striking colors pop here and there. I love how the whole area is well-lit naturally, natural light just makes everything look pretty (on photo). and then there’s this corner that resembles a cave, a civilized cave, one that you can plonk yourself comfortable on their tastefully placed chairs and stools.

the environment here is great for gathering with buddies or girlfriends.

Triple Chocolate Liege Waffle | RM 18.90 {highly recommended}
two pieces of thick and dense waffle, topped with a scoop of butter almond ice cream and oreo, served with 3 types of chocolate sauces, a dollop of fluffy whipped cream, another scoop of oreo ice cream topped with fresh strawberries.

liege waffle is made of yeasted dough, unlike ordinary waffle which is made of baking powder. and that’s why the texture is denser and fluffier. and I love how it remained crisp and not soggy when it’s cold. it’s great enough on its own, but lagik best eaten with the premium ice cream and drizzled with some dark chocolate. yum. white and milk chocolate were too sweet for my liking.

only one thing to pinpoint, their ice cream melts fast, so devour it quick!

Kiwi Mango Crepe | RM 16.90 {not recommended}
we also ordered a crepe dessert for sharing!

crepe topped with scoops of mango and vanilla ice cream, a dollop of cream, trickled with chocolate sauce, and fresh mango and kiwi cubes on the side. dark chocolate is available at disposal. but I reckon you can do without it.

personally, I think this crepe dessert has nothing to shout about, I prefer the waffle more, more value for money. and I wish the mango cubes is sweeter since kiwi is already sourish. paiseh ar I am so spoilt by my homegrown mangoes hehe.

Recommended Dish(es):  Triple Chocolate Liege Waffle

Spending per head: Approximately RM15(其他)
