One of Adam's favourites and a must-have each time we're there, is the Pongteh Chicken (RM 15). The chicken is always nicely braised till very soft in a taucheow sauce that is both sweet and rich, probably due to the sugar cane in this dish that's being used. Besides chicken, there's also mushroom, ear fungus, potatoes in this dish, all very well-cooked till the sweet flavours have been thoroughly absorbed. It's home-cooked satisfaction in a claypot and the sauce and meat goes great with piping hot white rice.

My favourite on the other hand is this oft-found dish - the Honey Sotong (RM 15). Sure, a lot of places do this, but I find few do it well so I keep on coming back here for my dose of Honey Sotong. The sotong (squid) is deep fried to perfection and manages to be both crunchy and sticky with lots of honey at the same time. Each piece of sotong is fried till glazed all over with honey, and at the same time still remains bouncy in the bigger squid pieces, or just plain delightfully crunchy in the smaller pieces (like the tentacles).

Great Baby Back Ribs! Smile Aug 15, 2012   (Related Review)

Betty's isn't just famous for pork chops; the pork ribs here are also a force to be reckoned with! For this meal we had another customer favourite, the Baby Back Ribs (RM 32.50). The pork rib meat was incredibly tender, falling off the bone at a slight touch. We also love the sauce here, there's a lovely smokey yet sweet taste that complements that well-marinated meat well. These ribs can rival even the more established rib joints out there especially with its more affordable price.

The dessert menu at Betty's is very simple, to the point where there is only Bread Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream or Apple Crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream (RM 8), or just scoops of different flavours of Bud's Ice Cream. We have never tried the bread pudding, but that's because we've always loyally stuck by the apple crumble - it's become a bit of a routine, really.

The crumble is moist and very buttery, while the apple mixture edges towards being more sour than sweet. The apple chunks are not overcooked and still have a nice bite to them. Some may not like that the apple mix can end up getting very sticky and gooey though. Cornflakes are sprinkled on the top, giving an extra crunch to the crumble as well. We also love the vanilla ice cream used - very creamy and milky.

Second on the list of must-tries is the Pork Chop with Country Gravy (RM 23). There are 2 other sauces to choose from on the menu (orange cream and apples), but we find their signature country gravy to be the best! The gravy is actually the same one used in the Dog Food, so if you order the Dog Food and this Pork Chop you're actually getting a double dosage of the same sauce. Again, the sauce tastes extremely rich, silky and creamy, a great match with the juicy, tender pork chop. If you don't really fancy so much creamy goodness in your food then don't attempt this combination.

But that's not all! The mash potato is worth a mention. The mash is well-seasoned with just the right amount of salt and pepper and also perfectly pounded into a silky soft texture, with only small hints of sediment or chunks of potato inside. But the real secret lies in eating it with the country gravy - absolutely appetizingly awesome!

Dog Food? Smile Aug 15, 2012   (Related Review)

First on the list of must-trys at Betty's is this serving of fries called Dog Food (RM 9)! I know I know.. the name doesn't exactly have a very tempting ring to it, but it does make people curious, and trust me when I say it's worth trying! This starter basically only consists of fries, but it is soaked in their signature country gravy and cheese melted on top. I know it sounds simple, but you must try the fries together with the sauce to know what a good combination it makes. The sauce is extremely decadent and creamy, and the addition of cheese makes the whole thing extremely rich. The fleshy fries are lovely too, thickly cut which enables it to absorb the cream gravy all up. Oh, and it is also served on a round metal dish to complete the presentation of "dog food"! lol

Unique cakes Smile Aug 15, 2012   (Related Review)

There was no stopping us from grabbing 2 slices of cake for the taste! We took the 2 most interesting-looking ones, one of which was the Coconut Bounty Cake (RM 15). This had a great marriage of light white and milk chocolate mousse and coconut shavings on top, much like its namesake candy bar. The mousse was creamy and fluffy, and the light sponge layers in between weren't too sweet. The coconut shavings were a decadent topping as well, adding in that extra crunch of texture. Definitely something different that we hadn't had before, and I would recommend this to friends, even more so if you're a Bounty lover. =)

The other slice was of course the Cempedak Pistachio Cake (RM 15). We had read so much about this that we weren't going to let it go just because of a small issue like a full stomach! The cream turned out tasting very strongly of the sweet, fragrant cempedak fruit but it was toned down by the presence of the light pandan layers, with just a subtle pandan flavour. If you have friends looking for something different, or if you want to wow the family with a unique cake for a celebration, this Cempedak Cake may be for you. =D
