A little of Taiwan in Miri Smile Dec 16, 2015

Categories : Taiwanese | Café | Noodles

If you're a fan of Taiwanese (fusion) food then look no further! This little Taiwanese Cafe sells quite an impressive range of Taiwanese fusion food.

Nestled on the first floor of a shoplot at the Bouevard area, this quaint little shop is nicely decorated with led lights and tree branches. Sounds weird but it's actually a very innovative design by the owner.

It's very often frequented by the young adults as well as working group and can be quite packed during the lunch hour.

They serve a variety of food from their famous fried chicken (50% off every tuesday) to bubble teas and all kinds of rice and noodle dishes.

I gave their minced meat rice and bubble green tea a try and here's what i think:

Bubble green tea
The tea is light and refreshing and is not overly sweet. They serve the drinks in plastic cups with covers so you can actually enjoy the drinks at their shop or just take it with you when you want to leave.

Minced Meat Rice
The minced meat rice is served in borwn paper wrapped inside a dim sum basket which i find very interesting. The owner gets to save on his diswashing liquid as he won't have to wash plates haha!

On to the taste. The rice is cooked with a little barley...and this lends an aromatic smell to the rice. It also comes with steamed veggy, a halved boiled egg which has been dipped in soya sauce as well as a lot of minced meat cooked with star anis. This is by far one of the most interesting dishes i have come across.

The chili that comes with the rice also surprised me. It is extremely hot and spicy. KFC should try and copy the level of their spiciness. It made my husband's face go red just eating it but he swore it was the best chili ever.

So go on, pop into the shop and give it a try. You won't be disappointed!

Me likey Grandpa's Noodles! Smile Dec 03, 2015

Having moved to Miri a year ago, i was constantly in search of a shop selling good and tasty noodles. After countless disappointments in various kopitiams, i finally found one of the best noodle shops in Miri!

Grandpa's homemade noodles are served in either Medium or Large sizes. (I always order large...it is THAT good). The noodles, tossed in a little oil and their secret soya sauce mixture, are firm and springy. They are further flavoured with barbecued pork (char siew) and crispy roasted pork and topped with sprinkles of spring onions. Oh, and they come with a little bowl of soup as well.

They have other dishes like the curry noodles and wantan noodles but i have yet to try them out. Every time i go to the shop, i will order the homemade noodles. It’s become an addiction. A mouth watering addiction.

They also serve a variety of freshly brewed local drinks like herbal tea (liang teh) and barley. The drinks are not mixed with sugar prior to being served to you. You are provided with a little bottle of liquid sugar to customize the sweetness of your drink.
They also have roti kahwin (plain bread with butter and kaya). While the roti kahwin is nothing to shout about, i like that they are generous with the spread of the butter and kaya.

If you do happen to be in the vicinity of Kuala Baram, do drop by the shop and give it a try. And you might just be pleasantly surprised at how good the noodles taste.

Route 66.... a must pass route Smile Dec 01, 2015

In the United States, Route 66 is known as a famous highway. Here in Miri, Route 66 is famous for its mouth watering dishes of cakes, sandwiches and aromatic teas and coffees.
Set in the heart of Lutong, Miri, the unobtrusive little shop has an impressive interior design with soft lighting, wooden looking counter top, and a range of encouraging mottos splashed across its wall. But the one thing that impresses most is of course it’s food...(lol, what else?)

Here’s a review of some of it’s mouth watering dishes (salivating as i write):

Amazing Pie
The name is worthy of the pie they sell, it truly is amazing. The top crust has a flaky and soft feel to it while the sides are crispy. And when you slice the pie, you can see the steam rising up and enjoy the fragrant smell of the creamy chicken chunks.

The caramel Cheese Cup Cake
A little small at first glance but this little cake packs a punch! It is extremely rich and has a wonderful salty taste to its top filling (the cheese cake) and a complimenting sweetness from the base (the dark crumbly chocolate base).

Chai Tea Latte
The volume might be a little disappointing but as you take your first sip, i swear you’ll never order another drink again. The taste of the chai tea is subtle at first but it slowly grows and leave a sweet lingering taste in your mouth.

This place is a must if you are a lover of coffee, tea and cakes. The service might be a tad bit slow (especially during weekends) but it’ll be definitely worth the wait.

A Trip to the Brewhouse OK Dec 01, 2015

Gives a christmassy feel!

Gives a christmassy feel!

The Brewhouse is located in THE most happening mall in Miri. It's been open for nearly a year (i think) but last week was the first time my husband and i stepped foot into the shop.
First impression; the shop has a very relaxing ambience, with grey bricklike walls and Christmassy lights hanging above. They even have a featured wall for you to write reviews and declarations!

We ordered a cup of chai tea latte and a brownie and here's what i think:

Chai Tea Latte
The oohs & aahs:
The smell was very aromatic, the feel of the latte was smooth and silky.
The blahs:
The volume was a little disappointing as it was served in a small little paper cup (we had a takeaway, the cup design was pretty though). And the latte tasted a little sourish, this might have been due to the latte’s spices. Also, it was a little weak for my liking. Could have been thicker and creamier.

Chocolate brownie
The ooh & aahs:
The size of the brownie was just right. It was sweet and had a slight saltiness to it which i liked. It was dense and not too crumbly.
The blahs:
The only downside of the brownie is that it had not walnuts (or any kind of nuts) Would have gotten the vote of BEST brownie if there had been some walnuts to give the texture a chunkier feel.

Didn’t get to try the other cakes and pastries as we were pressed for time, but we’ll definitely come back again to try them out.
