Bulgogi oh bulgogi! Smile Jun 09, 2016

Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Noodles

Korean food lovers listen up! There's an authentic Korean Restaurant at Premier 101 Kuching that serves wonderful and mouth watering Korean dishes. The name of the shop? 'Koreana' ( it's a smack in your face name just in case you didn't know they sell Korean food).

This time, my dad and I ventured to this restaurant for a Bulgogi lunch and boy was it gooooooooooood!

At less than RM50, we were treated to a hot plate of sizzling beef marinated in sweet soya sauce and tossed with caramelized onions. 5 (read refillable) side dishes accompanied the bulgogi and they were boiled sweet black beans, the spicy but refreshing cabbage kimchi, steamed egg plants with a generous dose of ikan bilis and chilli, spinach with sesame seeds and crunchy but sweet radish kimchi. Mix all these with with their sweet and spicy bean sauce, scoop them into the freshly washed green leafy lettuce, place a few pieces of their juicy beef and wrap it up. Done? Pop the whole 'bulgogi wrapped in lettuce' into your mouth and be prepared to be blown away. It was thumbs up all the way.

For those of you who don't like the idea of popping raw veggies into your mouth (for fear of e coli and whatnots), you can order a steaming bowl of fluffy white rice that comes in a stainless steel bowl. The combination of the bulgogi and refreshing side dishes with rice is also wonderful. It was so good I finished 2 bowls of rice.

And since the side dishes are refillable you can just request for add ons and have them with your rice without the bulgogi. They are awesome one their own too!

So if you're in the vicinity of premier 101, why not try out Koreana? You'll definitely be back for more. A note though, do not confuse Koreana with the other Korean Restaurant situated 2 blocks away. They belong to two different owners.

Of waffles and ice cream Smile Jun 04, 2016

A visit to ST3 would not be complete without a visit to the DOT cafe, famous for their waffles and pizzas.

So off we went, hubbs, baby and I one night after dinner. There was a promotion that night (actually they seem to have a promotion every day) which included a combination of a waffe+ice cream + bananas and fresh watermelon juice. So we ordered that as well as a cafe latte.

Waffle :
The waffle wins hands down. It was light, fluffy and crispy. Just perfect for a toddler's supper. There was a generous amount of sliced bananas on top of the waffle with drizzled of chocolate sauce. And sitting on to of all the goodies was a soft serve vanilla ice cream. While the waffle, bananas and chocolate sauce were great, the ice cream was just ok. Don't get me wrong, it was nice and sweet but it just wasn't creamy enough.

Cafe latte:
I'll be honest here. I'm not a coffee fan but my husband is and he has extremely high standards when it comes to coffee so when he complained that the cafe latte was a tad bit too weak, well, I'll just have to take his word for it.

All in all, if you go to DOT, do give the waffle a try. That's something you won't regret.

Descendants of the Noodle Smile May 18, 2016

Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

A true kuchingnite would know that THE BEST noodle shop in town belongs to the undisputed Noodle Descendants. With a long and rich history of how the late coffee shop owner (lovingly called toh pui soho by patrons) who slaved away to make ends meet for her children when her husband passed away and to eventually become a reputed noodle seller.

These days, one has to wait at least an hour just to get a taste of their noodles. It is so good that even tourists who are pressed for time are willing to wait in queue.

Anyways, my dad and I patiently waited for 50 minutes for our noodles. And it was awesome with a capital A.

The noodles were tossed with sesame oil, black vinegar and crunchy fried shallots giving it an aromatic smell and taste.

The side dish is a combination of bouncy fish balls, minced meat, three layer pork, 'spare parts', zesty salted veggy and my personal favorite, the black seaweed. The serving is quite big so if you're not a heavy water you can just order one side dish and 2 bowls of noodles and still walk away full and satisfied.

I'd like to add that the current operator ( descendants of toh pui soh) were kind enough to take my dad's request into consideration to reduce the saltiness and to make the noodles more cooked (my dad's tastebuds have changed since undergoing chemo). Kudos to their attentiveness.

A must visit!

Bonjour Chateau Smile Apr 05, 2016

Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

A visit to KK isn't complete without a visit to the Chateau Patisserie. This quaint little restaurent has won allocades of awards before and it would be a shame not to try out their fabulous food....

1. Grilled Cod Fish
Freshly grilled cod fish bathed in warm brown gravy. One bite will leave you wanting to gobble down the whole plate. The servings come in 2 sizes, i ordered the smaller one and totally regretted it. Should have ordered the bigger serving as the fish tasted really good...fresh and succulent. It was served with a generous amount of mashed pumpkin (sweet and savory) and lightly boiled and crunchy green vegetables (for the life of me i don't remember the name of the veggy but they resembled a slim and green version of bean sprouts)

2. Beef steak
The sirloin beef steak was tender and well marinated. The chef must have had it cooked for a very long time to achieve such tenderness. It was served with the same brown thick gravy and heaps of mashed potatoes and boiled brocolli and carrots. There was not a single bite left after we finished dinner. It is that good. Definitely a must try.

3. Cream Brulee
We forgot to take a photo of the cream brulee...it was my first time trying it..tasted crispy on the top and soft at the bottom. A bit too sweet for me but my friends loved it. Presentation wise it was a blast.

Vegetarian anyone? OK Jun 20, 2016

Idealite has recently opened up two outlets in kuching. One in the bustling shopping center of Viva City and the other in the suburbs of Rock Road. Having had a wonderful experience dining at the outlet in Viva, I decided to bring my dad to the one at Rock Road. My old man has very high standards for good food mind you. If he says it's good then you will have to 'die die also must try'. If he says it's not so good then it'll probably be mediocre. So here's our review on the food we ordered:

1. The best-selling bak kut teh
6/10 stars. Taste wise it was good. The broth was thick and rich in flavor and the ingredients were provided in generous amounts, from the toufu, wolf berries, cabbages, soft boiled egg and needle mushrooms. But the problem with this otherwise aromatic dish was that the ingredients though generous did not absorb the flavor of the soup/broth. It was as if they were just dumped into the soup for a few minutes prior to being served.

2. The white fungus and pear soup
A well known delicacy meant to promote beautiful looking skin. And boy was this dessert good! It was subtly sweet (sweetness which I think naturally came from the pear) and the white fungus was soft and chewy. Perfect for consumption on a hot day.

3. Bibimbap
5/10. Perhaps I am a meat lover so without the marinated beef this dish somehow seemed incomplete. Plus the cucumbers and carrots were not very finely cut. A bit too rough for my liking. Also, I think they could have improved on their hot sauce as it didn't taste very authentic. I couldn't feel a Song Joon Ki in it haha.

While it might not be the best place to dine at, I appreciate their concept of cooking healthy food so no harm in giving this place a try. It's not the best but it's definitely not too bad.
