Pork Overload  Smile Dec 06, 2015

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

One weekend when my paternal side of family members were free, we all took a drive down just to have a good time together. And what better way to enjoy our fellowship than with some good food which is why we chose to have lunch at Siaw Kah, again, to have our fill of pork dishes.

We ordered Nam Yuu braised Pork Belly. This dish is alwys vry comforting because I remember having it as a kid - just have the sauce doused over a bowl of hot rice while the prok was cut into little pieces for me. Not many restaurants do this dish justice but Siaw KAh makes it super well, especially since it comes out piping hot from the kitchen. Have this with rice & you'll be sent to calorie heaven.

As always with my family, it isn't a proper meal unless there is claypot braised pork belly with salted fish. We have always liked the one from another restaurant and haven't found another that cooks this dish better, until we tried the one at Siaw Kah. It is nicely salted with a light touch of heat from the dried chilies. Nothing was left in the pot by the end of the meal.

Then we will always get one of our favourite dishes, a giant bowl of vinegar pork trotters. Many other places makes this dish more subtle in flavours however my family prefers those that are strongly tasting which is more sour, sweet and spicy. Which is why we always order whenever we're at Siaw Kah cause they do this dish to our preferred liking and are quite generous with their portions.

Although this place is a little far from home, we would be willing to drive there just to have a good meal. However please dress in shorts and comfortable t-shirt because it can be crazily hot dining there especially with the food you order, but I assure you that it is worth it.

Big Head Prawns OK Dec 04, 2015

After a little pampering session with my mom & her friends, one of them decided to bring us to Dengkil for some good food. Apparently she's been here before and quite like the food that they serve although it is a little far from where we were. Since we had time to spare, we drove there in the hot weather and expected some really good food.

Braised bittergourd was one of the first order. This is not a personal favourite of mine although everyone else at the table loved it. The vegetable was meltingly tender and soft with quite a nice flavour with the fried dried shrimps. It came recommended.

Then because they know that this is my favourite, we ordered two rolls of Lobak. This arrived at our table scorching hot as it came right out of the fryer. Although it seemed promising, this was mediocre at best and I did not like the popiah skin that was used to wrap around the meat inside. Only so-so.

Then as an added treat for the day, we also ordered some Har Lok but with big head prawns. Although I was not that pleased with the kind of sweet and sour sauce that it was cooked in, the seafood however was very fresh. The meat was juicy & succulent plus there was plenty of nice roe in the head. Good but taste wise not the best either.

Escargot Smile Dec 04, 2015

Going on the recommendation from someone else, we visited Monte's for lunch because that day we were craving for some western food. It was a little after the usual lunch rush hour so there wasn't many people dining there, but there were still a few tables occupied. So it was not long before we were led to a table and given menus.

For starters we ordered half a dozen of garlic & cheese baked escargots. Although slightly expensive as it is Rm26 just for just six snails, I think this tasted pretty good. Just the right amount of garlic cream and also the cheese which coats the morsel nicely. I would have licked the entire dish if I wasn't in a public restaurant.

As for the mains, we got the lunch set to share because we were not very hungry after all. We got the Black Pepper Chicken Chop that came with a side salad and drink. This tasted really good as the sauce has a very nice spice from the black pepper and the chicken although crunchy was not too dry. The salad was ohkay but nothing to shout about and as for the wedges, I liked them.

There are many other things on the menu which sounded pretty interesting to me. So I will most definitely be back to try them even if it is slightly on the more pricey side.

POT OF YAM Smile Dec 03, 2015

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

The day we went to have dinner at Double Joy was when I was not feeling very well. So you can imagine my displeasure when we arrived and the place was quite full of people, plus the weather was kind of hot which agitated me even further. It is safe to say that by then I was just expecting the worst for dinner. The steamed ginger and scallion fish that we ordered was.... It was not the best nor was it terrible. The one thing that I was looking forward to is the sauce which was quite scarce and there wasn't really much ginger either so the flavour was only so-so.

As always, my family's favourite is the Claypot Pork Belly with Salted Fish. I remember eating plenty of this growing up so I already know what is good and what isn't. Although the one I had at Double Joy was not the best, I can say that they cook this dish much better than a whole lot of other restaurants. The sauce was nicely thick with a hint of spiciness from the dried chillies.

And the best dish of the night was the stewed yam with pork ribs. Usually the yam that we get elsewhere is only tender but the one at Double Joy was so soft that it melted into the stew till it's almost like a thick soup. Plus the taste was amazing. For someone that was kind of sick this was very comforting and I couldn't stop drinking the sauce, dousing it all over my rice.

Sandwich Smile Nov 30, 2015

There have been quite a lot of hype about Le Pont - both negative and positive. I've also seen quite a lot of pretty pictures of the cafe on Instagram and also Facebook but have never got the chance to visit until recently.

Based on recommendation, I ordered the Vegetarian Lasagne which I shared with my good friend. It has roasted vegetables in between each layer and topped with some capers. It was Italian in every bite and I totally did not notice the missing meat element from the dish too.

Although I would prefer if my lasagne was hotter when it got to our table. But other than that this dish was pretty good for the rm25.90 price tag.

My order of Rose Latte priced at Rm12.90. This was a first time for me because it's not something I see a lot on regular cafe menus and probably was not a popular order. But I think this might just be almost as good as my Caramel Latte order. There's a very subtle rose flavour and sweetness in the coffee which makes it feel a little more special, then I feel a little bit more classy drinking it.

There are many more things on the menu that I've yet to try so I'd definitely be back.
