Yakitori Style Smile Dec 07, 2015
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Seafood

One night, after spending the day out with my friends just getting reacquainted once again, we found a nice place to just chill for dinner. We had a pretty late lunch so when it was time for dinner all of us were just too full to have an actual meal. So we decided to try some Yakitori instead and since we were nearby, Koyaku was our first choice.

It was pretty crowded and busy when we arrived - no surprise since it was a Saturday and also right when it was the dinner rush. However our server was very attentive and polite which really put us in a good mood. The dining style at Koyaku was really pleasant as you have the option of dining casual style or have something more fancy off the menu.

For starters, we were each offered this deep fried shrim head with some Japanese mayo to nibble on. This was complimentary and I am not sure if it changes on the daily, however I do like this little offer before the food you ordered arrives.

What I had ordered that night was several sticks of Yakitori which is grilled foods. First, I got some shishito peppers because it's really good and also quite expensive to buy at Isetan so I order it whenever I see it on the menu. Unfortunately that night they were compeltely out of that so I was left with my other orders only.

Instead I got the grilled sliced steak wrapped enoki mushrooms and squids (tentacles & body separately.) Both of these tasted really good, nicely smoky from the grill and also the teriyaki sauce that it was lathered with.

However my beef slices were more well done than I would have liked. It was dry and hard which was quite a struggle to chew so that wasn't the best of the night. However I liked the squids so much that I ordered another two servings of it after I was done with my first round.

The ambience of the place was borderline casual but also fine dining almost. Imagine a very quirky but calm izakaya, which was what this restaurant reminded me of. If I am around the area then I would most definitely pay a visit again.

Lunch Smile Nov 30, 2015

For a friend's birthday, we decided on splurging on some good Chinese good. The one place that caught our attention is Canton-i which we hadn't eaten at for years. I almost forgot how good the food there is although slightly pricey.

To share we got a platter of Char Siew & Siew Yuk. These were not at all disappointing because the char siew was nicely sweet, the edges charred just nice and the meat was also very tender. Almost as if it immediately melted on your tongue.

Whereas the Siew Yuk was different but equally good. The layer of skin was perfectly crunchy while having the right amount of salt while the meat was juicy. There's a nice layer of fat in between each layer of meat but it wasn't too much that I had to spit out most of it. This, I had a lot of.

Just to counteract how guilty we felt for indulging in so much meat, we got the stir-fried lotus root with cashews. This was my favourite dish because I like the vegetable is one thing but then the way that Canton I does it just makes it so much better. If we were not already quite full then I would have suggested to order a second helping of this.

Chicken & Waffles  Smile Nov 26, 2015

Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

After a rather negative first experience I had eating at Nutmeg, I was a little hesitant to return. However a friend assured me that things would improve as they give this place quite a good review. So reluctantly I went back with a rather low expectation so at least I won't be too disappointed if things were to turn out as it did before.

Perhaps because it was not lunch time so there were not too many patrons eating there. We got a table relatively quick and our waiter was more attentive this time, giving us a menu each almost instantly. I knew then to not order their baked eggs even though I wanted to have some nice runny egg yolk.

Instead my friend recommended the Chicken & Waffles. Which neither are really my ideal brunch or lunch order. But with good faith I ordered it anyway and it is safe to say that my impression of Nutmeg has changed after having this dish.

Sitting on top of a really nice light waffle is a slice of cheese, perfectly fried chicken with some corn strewn over it and then a beautifully poached egg. Also there's a little drizzle of maple syrup to keep it in it's 'southern' style. This dish I really liked because the flavour of everything just goes so well together.

And having the richness of the yolk from the poached egg drizzling all over the crisp waffle & chicken was just heaven in a bite. So this dish has become my number one dish to order when I do visit Nutmeg and now, I no longer feel a slight disdain for the place.

In fact I think I will go there almost every time I'm at Bangsar Village. Just for this dish.

Roast meats Smile Nov 23, 2015

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Noodles

I've seen this restaurant several times now, especially after finish doing my grocery shopping at Jaya Grocers. But then whenever I walk by I see a lot of people especially during lunch or dinner rush hour which tells me that the food is pretty good.

Plus the several hunks of roasted duck and char siew hanging at the glass window always seem to be super delicious but I have yet to try it until recently. With mom, we ventured to Village Roast Duck for some good roast meats which means I got to try more things.

For me, I got the Dried Wanton Noodles with Char Siew. A little more expensive than those you can usually get at a local coffee shop, however I think there is a good reason for that. The noodles were nice and al-dente mixed with a very good flavoured sauce.

Then the char siew was so so so so so amazing plus there's a bigger portion of it than what we can usually get elsewhere without ordering an extra plate. This was so good that we ordered another plate of it just to share. For mom, she got the same dried noodles except she got roasted duck instead. This was also a good choice because the meat was nice and juicy without being overly dry. Plus the skin is nicely crisp without a too much fat. So having this with the dried al-dente noodles was quite satisfying.

We would most definitely be back to try other things from the menu. The one that we are looking forward to the most is the wantons which we left out because we would rather have an extra plate of noodles with char siew instead.

Hunan Specialty Smile Nov 20, 2015
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant

Although I've never been to Hunan nor do I have a strong desire to, I can safely decude that I do like their good. It is all usually spicy and strongly flavoured which is my personal preference when it comes to food. Though my first-hand experience with Hunan food is only through dining at Hoseki.

Deep fried Lotus Root was the first dish that arrived at the table. Here's the thing, I really really love lotus root so there was no way this dish would have been bad in any possible way. The fact that it was nicely deep fried just made it all the more better because it's batter was nicely salted. I would have ordered another dish if that didn't seem to greedy.

Although I cannot pronounce the name of this dish, all I know it is deep fried chicken with lots of dried chilies and also some nuts. It's kind of a crazy mix but actually pretty good - though be prepared for this to be super insanely spicy especially when you eat the meat with the dried chilli.

Then we must always have some vegetables with the meal so we ordered the four heavenly kings with belacan. Or at least I think it is belacan because this too was spicy but then the paste might be something special from Hunan only. I like this a lot too.

Then we also got Steamed Fish with Ginger. This was also very good although more spicy than I would have hoped cause I usually ladle the sauce over my rice and eat it like that. But this packed more of a punch than the one you would usually get at a normal chinese restaurant.

Despite how spicy the food at Hoseki is, I assume that traditional Hunan food is how this is supposed to be. This makes me somewhat excited to try actual Hunan food at Hunan some time soon. But until then, I'll definitely be back here again for more.
