Ipoh dinner Smile Oct 13, 2015

After taking a slow drive down to Ipoh, stopping every now and then for toilet breaks on top of getting more food, we reached just in time for dinner. Since everyone was kind of tired already we were not too bothered with searching for a specific place to eat at. So the first restaurant that caught our attention is the first one we ventured into.

Here, we ordered a few dishes that came recommended by their wait-staff.

Stir-Fried Char Siew was one of the main and truthfully, I was quite pleased with this. Never would I have considered to cook char siew but this tasted very good. Some pieces were more caramelised than others so it was slightly crispy and sweet. Everyone at the table really enjoyed this.

We also got the Steamed Chicken. Since I've had better ones in KL, I felt like this was only so-so. At least to me it was since everyone else thought it was pretty good.

Another dish that came recommended was the Fish-Paste stuffed Tau Fu. I actually quite liked this dish because the fish paste was very nicely flavoured which masked the weird taste of tau fu which I usually dislike. Plus the sauce that it came with was nice especially when mixed with white rice.

For vegetable we ordered their Stir-Fried Kailan with Yam. It's quite an odd combination because we usually have one or the other in a dish. But the chef cooked this dish quite well and we all gobbled it up by the end of the night.

We found this restaurant by chance and now that we've tried it, we will most definitely be back again when it is possible. Only this time we will try other things off their menu to see if it is as good.

Based on what we heard from a few people, locals and non-locals, this place is a must visit whenever we're in Ipoh. Though be warned that at peak hours there will be full of people there trying to get a table and food as well.

The main thing that is popular at Big Tree Foot is their Yong Tao Fu. Apparently it's pretty generous in size and cheaper than any that you can find in KL - whether that is true is quite uncertain to me. But it is pretty good.

They have many many choices of Yong Tao Fu for you to choose from, all laid out in separate trays. All you have to do is go there and pick what you want, choose whether you would like it to be in soup or have it cooked with some sauce.

We tried both and I quite liked the spread that we got. Though I guess because some of it have been cooked beforehand and left there to sit for a while, it's no longer as crispy or fresh-tasting anymore. But the sauce & soup that comes with it does kind of make up for that fact a little bit.

There was also a store that sells all sorts of fried stuff. From fried bananas to nian gao and then there were these sweet potato balls. Seemingly simple and blah, but one bite of these puffs had us going back there to buy several batches more. It is even better if you get it just fried. MUST TRY.
