Rice Bowls Smile Jan 06, 2016   (Related Review)

That day at lunch with my friend at Jaya One, she ordered the Katsudon which is just fried chicken fillet over rice with a soft boiled egg. I quite like her order over my beef one because the meat was nicely flavoured from the batter and also perfectly crisp.

So over a bed of hot rice with a perfectly poached egg which you would break then let the yolk coat each grain. Then for added flavours we also added a little bit of soya sauce and also the dried chilli oil that was provided.

The portion at the price of Rm11 is pretty substantial. Plus if this isn't enough for you then you have additional sides as an add-on for no more than a couple of ringgits, so that would most definitely make your meal more filling.

Can't wait to be back for a good hearty meal and also a good chat with my best friend. smile

Local delights  Smile Jan 05, 2016

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy eating at Sam's? Especially when I am in the mood for something casual yet want pretty good food - which is why my mom brought me there for dinner one night. Although it was a weeknight and we had just gotten home from work, we still dragged ourselves out of the house and drove to Damansara Heights just for food.

Our usual order is western and would most definitely get the really good grilled chicken, but that night we were quite into the local food. Plus apparently she's tried them and found that to be exceptionally worth trying which was what we got.

My favourite of the night happens to be the mutton curry which was specially ordered for me. It came in a claypot filled to the brim with super thick and spicy curry, then in it was plenty pieces of meat and also chunks of potatoes. This comes with your choice of either rice or naan, which I obviously would choose the later. Nothing like some soft & fluffy naan to soak up all the delicious curry.

Because it's my mother's favourite, she also ordered a sambal prawn and I could undersyand why. The prawns were super fresh and they were not stingy at all with the amount we were given. Plus the sambal really made me tear because it was hella spicy but in a good way, so eating this with some rice is ideal.

Now I'm already thinking of the food and can't wait to be back for more.

Banana Leaf Rice cravings Smile Jan 05, 2016

I get the very strong cravings for some good and hearty banana leaf rice quite often. Usually I'd drive all the way to bangsar with my friends just to have some good ones and never leave feeling disappointed. On saturday that was the same case too.

My friends and I were looking to have dinner at Nirvana. Except trying to get a table there on a saturday night is kind of crazy to say the least. There was a long line and the place was packed like sardins in a can. One look at that had us re-thinking where to eat for the night so we walked behind Tous Les Jours to Raj's instead. I've heard good things about this place but never got the chance to try it until the other day.

Safe to say I would much rather dine here now.

We ordered a banana leaf rice each then for sides, we got a fried chicken thigh, squid and also some mutton varuval. All of it was super good, especially the mutton as the thick gravy had a good strong spice flavour while the meat was tender but also chewy. The fried squid was also good as the batter was nicely flavoured and being freshly fried just makes it that much better, plus it came with some deep fried onion too. Really loved the sides.

The portions in which came as a basic banana leaf rice set was very substantial. There were braised cabbage, cucumber with yoghurt and some other veggie as sides, also som deep fried cucumber which was my absolute favourite. I had asked for extra of these and they happily gave me extra. And then the fish curry I doused over my rice tasted good too. Not overly watery and packed quite a good punch of flavour.

This is now my favourite place to get banana leaf rice. So I'd definitely be back there more often and am already craving for the food there now.

Drinks & Desserts Smile Jan 05, 2016

After a round of dinner, the girls decided that the night was still too early to end so we went to get some drinks and dessert. One of them had tried the food at Torii and highly recommends it so that was where we went.

The ambience there was really nice, especially upstairs where it's more for dates and casual drinking. When I saw the menu we all wished that we hadn't eaten beforehand because everything sounded really delicious, especially the yakitoris. But we were already quite full so we settled for something less filling instead.

My drink was the peachy mint (virgin) mojito. Since I was the responsible driver that night, I rather not risk getting stopped at roadblocks and be in some sort of trouble. So I opted for an alcohol free night and actually, this was quite a smart choice. Super refreshing from the mint and peach juice, then chilly from the crushed ice. I could have two glasses of this easily and I wonder if their liquor mixed one would taste better.

To share, we ordered the coconut panacotta that comes with a scoop of ice cream. Usually it is vanilla but on a friend's suggestion, we switched it to white chocolate lavender - in hindsight, that was the best decision of the night. The panacotta was super smooth but the toppings of toasted coconuts and fruits gave a really nice texture. Then the ice cream, it is safe to say that it was the best scoop of ice cream I had in a very long while.

We will probably be back to have their dinner menu. Can't wait.

Simple Seafood Smile Jan 05, 2016

There was one day where all I could think about throughout the entire day was salted egg yol crab. Coincidentally my mom was in a good mood and was at the office, so she decided to go to Pantai Seafood for some good crab. Its her favourite place for seafood and I rarely had a preference, all I wanted was my salted egg yol laden crab.

A favourite of my mom's is the stir-fried bee hoon. Actually it is quite good because there's very good 'wok-hei' in this dish plus a lot of ingredients in it too.

We also got two portions of steamed tiger prawns. This is something I enjoy a lot because the crustaceans were alive just moments ago and then taken from the tank, then cooked to our liking. So this means the prawns are super fresh, juicy and succulent. A clear way to tell if it's fresh is when you eat the head and it tastes really good, something I enjoyed more than actually having the flesh.

Finally our order of crab arrived. So the kind we got at Pantai Seafood isn't exactly big in size however it was very fresh as the meat was tender and very sweet, seperates easily from the shell too. I had such a good time devouring this dish down to the very last bits of salted egg yolk. Everyone loved this and was tempted to order another dish of it but we were already full by then.
