Udon for Lunch! Smile Jan 26, 2015

Checked out Udon-Ya San again some weeks ago. Here's my review. Better late than never!

I tried the Tsukimi Udon and the Chicken Karaage, this time with a cucumber drink. The prices are still reasonable ranging from RM6 to RM12 per dish depending on what you order.

The signature homemade Udon was chewy, just how I preferred it.  The udon was mixed in a sesame infused tangy sauce.  I quite liked it as it was not too heavy and it went pretty well with the fresh vegetables in the udon.  The karaage was as expected. It was deepfried without tasting too oily. A good complement as a side dish. The cucumber drink was pretty refreshing too!

I had also ordered the salad and this time I asked the chef to put the dressing on the side which he willingly obliged. So I added the amount of dressing I liked and the salad turned out to be crispy and yet not overwhelmed by the dressing.  Yummy!

I understand from the proprietors that they are constantly creating new dishes.  So, the next time I walk pass their Noren (Japanese door hanging), I hope I will be preasantly surprised! Cook on!

I was feeling adventurous and decided to drive to Pandan Indah after work and check out a Japanese restaurant which one my friends have been bugging me to visit.
It was pretty easy to find as it was conveniently located opposite Old Town White Coffee. Parking was easier near the used car dealer lots plus it was the evening.

Udon ya San has an unassuming shop front but pleasing to the eye. As I parted the noren (Japanese door hanging), I was greeted by an almost Zen like interior. It has minimalistic decor using mainly wooden furniture. Functional yet cosy.

I was welcomed by the ubiquitous 'Irrashaimase!' as the smiling host walked towards me. I chose a table with benched seats along the wall and proceeded to review the menu.

Udon ya San's specialty is their daily made fresh udon I was informed. Sounds good! I ordered the Mentaiko Udon (RM14), Sesame dressing salad (RM5) and hot Ocha (RM1.50).

Mentaiko Udon was a creamy dish with fish roe and finely julienne cucumber. Eagerly I mixed the dish and tried the udon ... Hmmm creamy chewy udon flavoured nicely by the slight saltiness of the roe. The cucumber added a little crunch. Nice contrasts. Love it!

The sesame dressing salad provided the fibre in my meal. It was a mixture of finely chopped cabbage and carrots in a tasty sesame dressing. Appetising! However, I thought there was a tad too much dressing which made the cabbage and carrots kind of soggy. I wonder if they could serve the dressing on the side the next time I order it.

Overall, for the price of the dishes, it was good value (I ordered the most expensive dish on the menu!) Their Kakeudon is only RM6! Served with the chef's own chilli concoction to boot! Too full to try it this time. Will definitely be back for more udon and enjoy the gracious and attentive service from the host and the staff.
I give a score of 4.5 out of 5 for presentation and taste, service and value for money!
