Bev C'afe OK Jul 23, 2018

A walk near 15 minutes away from City Square Johor along Jalan Wong Ah Fook would be interesting if you ever explore the Cafe available there. With the good exchange rate, cross border cafe hopping as a weekend activity has turned pretty popular these days. Not only that these hipster cafes are increasing in our neighbouring country near the borders. I love the surprises thrown to me everytime we enter the cafe. Retaining the worn down and old facade, it quite interesting how their interior is furnished for the own style of cafe.

Chancing by Bev C, we would not have known that the upper storey is double up as a cafe from the clothing store till we walked pass a sign stating that. Interior is pretty spacious for a fashion boutique shop with a few racks of clothing each at one side of its perimeter.

With a little bit of backgroud, Bev C is a clothing label with original design since 2013. They have every piece of clothing designed from the sketch and scratch. They have a philosophy believing in "Seeking you own style" rather that cultivating a culture of "following the trend blindly". Further more adding a line saying Own your Style or Stay Naked.

It is unpretentious in its rustic outlook with flooring tiled with the olden kind of 1 x 1 cm square tiles. I walked up the flight of wooden stairs with additional care as I heard them creaked and moan under my feet, fearing that the steps might be not sturdy enough to accommodate my weight.

Seating is pretty limited with narrow walkways however I would say that the ambiance are not too bad. With a packed Saturday afternoon, we were ushered to the seats by the windows looking out to a big tree as well as the opposite shop houses.

While waiting for the food, we inquire the service staff for the latest password knowing that the previous "giveme5dollar" has been changed. We were given yet another password that will never fail to give a smile on our face, that is "askyourfriend".

Doing the so mainstream thing that everyone here does, we ordered their Chocolate Mint Pie which gain quite a number of good comments by the past patrons. Chocolate Mint Pie was served on an IKEA wooden board. The pie was totally out of my expectation for it looks so cool in its beveled minty green topped with a dark brown cookie. With a distinctive layer of mint from the top and bottom filled with chocolaty flavored pie cradled by the charcoal crust, such combination was perfect for us as pie was not too sweet.

Lemon Tea was frozen in cubes and served with a slice of lemon in a cup. Additional lemon tea is given in a separate flask. Taste is rather normal.

Perhaps we have more to talk about for the Butterfly Pea Cubes for that it was not very common quencher served in the Cafe. The cubes were frozen with its flower and stalks, not really suitable to put the cubes in your mouth unlike the Ice Cube Lemon Tea. It tasted a tad light and refreshing on its own. For more distinctive flavour, you may want to add the lime juice given to alter the taste.

There are still a number of Cafe that we yet to explore in that area. Each and every one has its own uniqueness. I don't mind coming back again, however given so much choices there, its more likely I would be another place during my next Cafe Session.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/lavender-flagship-store.html

This was unplanned as we were just looking for some cafe around and that was closed for the afternoon. Thus we drove around and chanced upon upon such a big building by Lavender which caught our surprise and decided to check it out.

The building facade was grand, attractive and precisely one of the reason why we were there. Lavendor Flagship Store consists of 2 level where the ground level was more on their Bakery while the upper level was more of Bistro Cafe.

Upper Level of Lavender -

L.Table Interior was posh, lavishly renovated to a modern taste and filled with the festive season mood even though Christmas is still more than a month away.

We ordered the nibble platter and shared among ourselves. These finger food were nicely served with grease paper and stainless steel buckets. Nibbles consist of fried calamari, little drumlets and croquette.

Nibble Platter - RM 24.53

Beating the heat with these drinks and under the cooling air conditioned shelter in Lavender, and together with the nibbles it really makes life so enjoyable passing the lazy Sunday afternoon.

Panna Cotta was wobbly and just as what it is supposed to be, smooth and topped with sweet syrup.

Pandan Pana Cotta - RM 7.55

Business was indeed very good and the waitress had came to us for a few times that the selected cakes of our choice had been sold out. We left with no other option but to order the red velvet cake. The spongy soft layer velvet cake was made up of alternate fresh creams and topped with berries that consist of raspberry, blueberry, strawberry and black berry, giving a refreshing taste. Overall this cake texture was fluffy.

The belgian waffles topped with strawberry ice cream. These waffles came in set of 4 and heart shapes drizzled with Maple Syrup. Crust was crispy and fragrant with a chewy internal. Seems like I had make a right choice out of Vanilla and Chocolate ice cream as their strawberry ice cream is the kind that I have always wanted. It was not too milky but comes with good strawberry taste.

Waffle Ice Cream - RM 20.75

Ambiance wise, I find that its is very suitable for couples and friends who want to shelter away from the hot weather outside catching up with each other. There are mains like pasta that I would very much like to try if I can be here the next round. On top of that, their service standard is worth mentioning as the communicating with the crews were professional and polite.

Fei Zhou (Restoran Famous Congee) OK Sep 26, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Porridge

Fei Zhou, when translated from the chinese characters means "Flying Porridge" and the way it is pronounced, rhymes with Africa. It is just a stone throw away from the popular Sutera Mall that most of us has been visiting.

Fei Zhou Interior was modern with recommended and signature dishes pictures on the wall. Premises is air-conditioned and fixed with ceiling fans to cool the temperature in the restaurant.

Environment

Beverages
We started with some sides while waiting for the porridge and rice. Abalone mushrooms were deep fried and with its spicy soury dipped, I found that this is something special and not yet found in Singapore so far.

Deep Fried Mushroom - RM 10.80

Dont miss out famous dish like the Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables to complement with your porridge dishes. The pork were braised till tender together with garlic gloves and preserved vegetables.

Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetable - RM 15.80
With hints of peppery taste among the fragrant fried rice, these air flown salmon was cut into dices and topped the rice. Impressed by the bright orange presentation among the white, yellow and green ingredients in the rice, the taste was relatively above average. A little peeve is that the Salmon may be more on the fishy side.

Air Flown Salmon Fried Rice - RM 18.80
Every pot of congee is served in the earthen claypot with a base wrapped with aluminium. The congee's depth of flavour come from the long hours of cooking the broth and rice grains were slowly cook to the texture. To enhance the flavours, spring onions as well as fried onions were added.

Sliced Fish Congee - RM 13.80
Sea Bass Mix the garnishing well. The pot of minced pork & century Egg Congee was savoury with generous amount of Minced pork and egg given.

Minced Pork & Century Egg Congee - RM 7.20
My bowl of congee won't be completed without these little fried fritters in it. If you are like me, mixed some of these into the porridge and enjoy the bites.

Fried Fritters
Break the egg yolk and stir the fried fritters into the porridge.

It was a pleasant experience to have enjoy pots of porridge and kinds of dishes by Fei Zhou. I don't mind popping by once in a while for simple food like this.

Visit http://www.umakemehungry.com/2015/03/penang-road-famous-teochew-chendul.html for more reviews

It's been sometimes since I last visited City Square in Johor Bahru and it came to our surprised when we saw this new shop front stating "Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul". As a Chendol lover as well as with a dialect group of Teochew, I gave me no reason not to try.

Interior was spacious and modern, an opposite sight from its store front which looked traditional.

However when it comes to the ordering counter, there is a mixture of both old school and modernized concepts. With the mosaic tiles in shades of greys applied onto the walls of the counter, it brought us an olden day feel to somewhere back into the 60s together with its black & white photographs near its menu.

Upon ordering, we will be giving this number tag with the big signage on Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul.

Chendul was tasted light with the blend coconut milk but that did not make the taste of Gula Melaka stands up. Though it was chilled but if it is being served in metal spoons, it would give better scores to what I seek for in a bowl of chill dessert.
Chendol - 6.90 Rm

Ice Kachang was ordinary and even the syrup add no effects to the bowl of ice . Green beans, creamy corns, chopped peanuts, green colored sagos as well as "atap" seeds were added but still lacking in volume as compared to the shaved ice.
Ice Kachang - 5.90 Rm

All in all, desserts were passable, if I were to stamp my preference between these two, I would have Chendol voted.

Taiwan Nostalgia OK May 18, 2015
Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Seafood | Noodles

Having walk round JB City Square a few rounds, we finally make up our mind and headed for Taiwanese Cuisine. We were quite please to see the crowd in the restaurant and went right ahead without giving much thought.

Taiwan nostalgia is located at a corner of level 3 somewhere near the escalator towards the link bridge to the Malaysia custom. Wifi is available in the restaurant if you are looking for some cyber connections via your smart phone.

We were served with menus as soon as we settled down in the restaurant.

Interior was decorated in modern Taiwanese style with soothing background pop music mainly from Taiwanese Singers. One thing I noticed about the ceilings was that there are patches of water stains on the fore-ceiling which make me feel a little bit uncomfortable dining there.

Verbana tea comes in a pot, served with wooden tray with 2 porcelin cups. Having this herbal tea not only boost the mood, it also aids digestion. There are many kinds of teas available on the menu with their health benefits summarized.

Unlike the hot tea, my cup of lime green tea with plum comes in a sealed disposable cup.

I have been missing Taiwanese food lately and upon spotting their braised meat rice, I planned to order it without much thought. I took the set menu to enjoy my meal to the fullest. Set meal is completed with a bowl of rice, soup, vegetable and dessert.

Luckily the portion of the rice came in small portion topped with favourful minced meat adorn by a little stalk of coriander leaves and not forgetting the full size braised egg. Meat was tasty and recommendable!

Vegetables strikes a good balance for a healthy meal. However the temperature of the food was not really ideal.

While the meatballs were served together with the soup and they are bouncy.

The meatball was cut into quarters, easier for us to chew on.

A glance onto other tables and you can see one of such Taiwanese Omelette was ordered.

Interestingly prepared in a roll form which reminds me of our local "popiah". A close look at it and you will see that the roll is actually made up of crispy "roti prata" filled with egg, meat floss and cabbages.
Lovely!

Lovely!

Here's the cross section of the roll.

Another attractive dish ordered was crispy salted chicken ramen. It was nicely done with portions of ingredients neatly place in the respective sector: Cripsy chicken, beansprouts, vegetables, shredded carrots, braised egg and braised minced meat with ramen all buried under them. We started by mixing everything together and get a "mess" in the bowl. Everything was good except that the noodle was a tad dry, perhaps there was not enough oil given for the noodles.

This was the long awaited dish and it came finally after few rounds of chasers. Served in claypot with burning fire, Mapo Tofu was really spicy and oily, living up to the dish's name. Ingredients like minced meat, tofu, chilli and mushrooms were distinctively bubbling under the flame. This dish is not recommended if you cannot take a higher level of spice.

Our meal end off with a chilled plate of cut pears, with compliments from the kitchen.

Afterall, I find that having Taiwan food in Taiwan Nostalgia was a good experience. Servers were all friendly and polite, quite on the ball type. Food wise, I would say portion and taste is decent to what we are paying for.
