Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles | Dim sum

We wanted to explore more Dim Sum places in Johor Bahru and we read of Changman. By the time we cleared the jams at the causeway, its already tea time. Besides selling Hong Kong Dim Sum, Changman offers a variety ranging from Chicken Rice to Hor Fun too.

Mistakenly order the Avocado Juice as I thought it was Avocado milkshake and only to find out that they are actually offering a low sugar level Avocado Juice. Juice tasted a little creamy and was light in taste, not too bad though.

Looked dry on the external but as the saying goes, do not judge a book by its cover. These carrot cakes were crispy on the outside with a soft texture under the layer. Simply love the Carrot Cake and it went very well with the accompanied chilli.

The Xiao Long Bao was something I looked forward to as they were served differently with each of them sitting on a mini aluminium tray. Be additional careful as the skin was rather thin and with soup bursting out of its case easily.

Besides the XLB, I will also give a vote to their chicken rice set. You can never get a set of chicken rice set with drumstick at this kind of pricing in Singapore.
Chicken Rice (1 Set) - RM 6.00

Poached chicken was yummy and drenched with sauce. Meat was tender and from its skin color, you can tell that kampung chicken was used.

Char Siew Buns were soft and packed with sweet chopped Char Siew fillings.

The green buns were stuffed with yummy golden lava or "Liu Sha" was not too bad but the skin of the buns was kind of thick with buns lacking the oozing power from its fillings. Buns were soft but was not as fluffy.

Rice Roll aka "Chee Cheong Fun" was smooth and silky, encasing a few prawns. Generous amount of soy sauce was added to elevate the taste. On top of serving them in a leaf shaped plate, greens were included as a side to make the presentation looks better.

For extra kick, add some chilli to it.

"Har Kao" aka aka prawn dumplings were quite fragile in the sense that the prawns easily fell out from its translucent "casing".

How can Har Kao exists without Siew Mai in the Dim Sum Fare? Well, they were never be left out in our orders. Siew Mai has a touch of orange crab roes and the meat was rather springy.

Overall it was quite an average fare and spread of food from Changman Dim Sum. I don't mind revisiting with other groups of friends.

Visit http://www.umakemehungry.com/2015/03/penang-road-famous-teochew-chendul.html for more reviews

It's been sometimes since I last visited City Square in Johor Bahru and it came to our surprised when we saw this new shop front stating "Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul". As a Chendol lover as well as with a dialect group of Teochew, I gave me no reason not to try.

Interior was spacious and modern, an opposite sight from its store front which looked traditional.

However when it comes to the ordering counter, there is a mixture of both old school and modernized concepts. With the mosaic tiles in shades of greys applied onto the walls of the counter, it brought us an olden day feel to somewhere back into the 60s together with its black & white photographs near its menu.

Upon ordering, we will be giving this number tag with the big signage on Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul.

Chendul was tasted light with the blend coconut milk but that did not make the taste of Gula Melaka stands up. Though it was chilled but if it is being served in metal spoons, it would give better scores to what I seek for in a bowl of chill dessert.
Chendol - 6.90 Rm

Ice Kachang was ordinary and even the syrup add no effects to the bowl of ice . Green beans, creamy corns, chopped peanuts, green colored sagos as well as "atap" seeds were added but still lacking in volume as compared to the shaved ice.
Ice Kachang - 5.90 Rm

All in all, desserts were passable, if I were to stamp my preference between these two, I would have Chendol voted.

Taiwan Nostalgia OK May 18, 2015

Having walk round JB City Square a few rounds, we finally make up our mind and headed for Taiwanese Cuisine. We were quite please to see the crowd in the restaurant and went right ahead without giving much thought.

Taiwan nostalgia is located at a corner of level 3 somewhere near the escalator towards the link bridge to the Malaysia custom. Wifi is available in the restaurant if you are looking for some cyber connections via your smart phone.

We were served with menus as soon as we settled down in the restaurant.

Interior was decorated in modern Taiwanese style with soothing background pop music mainly from Taiwanese Singers. One thing I noticed about the ceilings was that there are patches of water stains on the fore-ceiling which make me feel a little bit uncomfortable dining there.

Verbana tea comes in a pot, served with wooden tray with 2 porcelin cups. Having this herbal tea not only boost the mood, it also aids digestion. There are many kinds of teas available on the menu with their health benefits summarized.

Unlike the hot tea, my cup of lime green tea with plum comes in a sealed disposable cup.

I have been missing Taiwanese food lately and upon spotting their braised meat rice, I planned to order it without much thought. I took the set menu to enjoy my meal to the fullest. Set meal is completed with a bowl of rice, soup, vegetable and dessert.

Luckily the portion of the rice came in small portion topped with favourful minced meat adorn by a little stalk of coriander leaves and not forgetting the full size braised egg. Meat was tasty and recommendable!

Vegetables strikes a good balance for a healthy meal. However the temperature of the food was not really ideal.

While the meatballs were served together with the soup and they are bouncy.

The meatball was cut into quarters, easier for us to chew on.

A glance onto other tables and you can see one of such Taiwanese Omelette was ordered.

Interestingly prepared in a roll form which reminds me of our local "popiah". A close look at it and you will see that the roll is actually made up of crispy "roti prata" filled with egg, meat floss and cabbages.
Lovely!

Lovely!

Here's the cross section of the roll.

Another attractive dish ordered was crispy salted chicken ramen. It was nicely done with portions of ingredients neatly place in the respective sector: Cripsy chicken, beansprouts, vegetables, shredded carrots, braised egg and braised minced meat with ramen all buried under them. We started by mixing everything together and get a "mess" in the bowl. Everything was good except that the noodle was a tad dry, perhaps there was not enough oil given for the noodles.

This was the long awaited dish and it came finally after few rounds of chasers. Served in claypot with burning fire, Mapo Tofu was really spicy and oily, living up to the dish's name. Ingredients like minced meat, tofu, chilli and mushrooms were distinctively bubbling under the flame. This dish is not recommended if you cannot take a higher level of spice.

Our meal end off with a chilled plate of cut pears, with compliments from the kitchen.

Afterall, I find that having Taiwan food in Taiwan Nostalgia was a good experience. Servers were all friendly and polite, quite on the ball type. Food wise, I would say portion and taste is decent to what we are paying for.

https://www.umakemehungry.com/2019/09/o-master-q.html

Recently, there were so much Johor Food flashing out in my friends and my social media pages that we could not resist any further, thus this is why we were here! We searched through the place for handmade noodle and was a tad lost due to the address given, nevertheless we found the place eventually.

O Master Q is located along the same stretch as our frequent visit massage place, Bangkok Spa.

Interior was rustic, just like any coffeeshop of  Singapore in the 1980s with its flooring tiled up by 1 x 1 cm square tiles in alternating colors (Greyish blue and White).

The stall is located at a prominent spot, right in front of the coffeeshop at one corner with bowls neatly stack and a refrigerator behind its shelfing. Besides the hand made Mee Hoon Kueh, there are other noodles for your choices.

Take a look at the master pulling off the Mee Hoon Kueh from the dough and into the pot of broth under the fire.

Each bowl was cooked individually and takes about 3 - 5 minutes. The main use of ingredients is fried crispy Ikan Billis. The soup version of Mee Hoon Kueh tasted pretty normal to me with a home cook taste.

Black fungus are good for health and they are also added as one of the ingredients. I bet this is the first time I ever had Mee Hoon Kueh with meat ball in it.

Dried version is most preferred by the diners from our observations. Mee Hoon Kueh was served in a mixture of sweet black sauce and sesame oil with ingredients slightly different from the soup version. It was topped with generous amount of fried Ikan billis, fried Wanton Skin, cut black fungus, meat ball, "Mani" Vegetables, Kang Kong and egg.

While it may not be that fantastic till we will purposely make our way back again, I will say they are still worth the try for their traditional, old-school Malaysian style kind of noodle and a decent broth.

Among all ingredients, I find that they could have omitted the minced meat and as a minced meat lover, I'm kind of disappointed here.

On a side note, some of the websites mentioned that they open at 11 am but when I was there during that time, staff of the same coffeshop told me that handmade noodle stall will open about 12 pm. Since its located near Bangkok Spa, those who feel hungry before or after their session can take a chance to visit O Master Q Mee Hoon Kueh since its a stone throw away.

https://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/06/jwc-just-want-coffee-factory-30.html

As the name suggests, Just Want Coffee is located in an industrial area and to be precise, its housed in a Factory which is surrounded by containers and run down buildings.

The facade just reminds me of Wheeler's Yard in Singapore making use of industrial factory to run a cafe business. Though they shared the same industrial theme, Wheeler's Yard is more on Bicycles.

Just behind the entrance door, you will notice that even the door handle is partially made up of the coffee filter holder, impressive!

As soon as we swang the main door, we realised JWC is a 2 Storey refurbished place and with their cafe themed industrial. Take a look at the upper level railings, they are make up of pipings.

Over the counter, this food elevator has bring convenience to staff of the cafe. It reduces the working staff from carrying heavy dishes up and down in the cafe. Up at the ceiling, there are a number of sacks hanging above? Don't worry about it falling down as they are only stuffed with shredded papers.

There are long tables in the cafe, suitable for group gathering. Under the cozy lights and air conditioning environment, this place make it so comfortable to chill out especially over a hot weather outside.

Right Side of the Cafe

To me, the "Customer Menual" is designed to be more like a technical instruction Menu to operate machines instead. Of course, there are pages with their food menu in the mixture of the technical information.

The concrete screed wall and flooring is no stranger to an industrial environment. Not only that, with the steel basins, old school type of pipes and taps, everything fit well to the industrial theme, even the overhead lamp.

The cut of Tiramisu's served was generous but ultimately not to our liking as the entire piece of cake was kind of frozen and tough to cut. Totally not the kind of soft and chilly Tiramisu we have expected as its not as moist. However in terms of taste wise, its still pretty ordinary.

Texture of cake as described was really silky like Tofu. The cheese cake was supported by a thin layer of biscuit as its base. Tasted not too bad.

Having order the Luxurious Affogato, we get to see the entire process of making it in the video, involving naked flames over the alcohol.

Choco Powder on the glass of cold chocolate is more than enough, making up a thick layer at the top neutralizing the sweet chocolate with a tad of bitterly taste.

Cold Chocolate & Caramel Macchiato Cold - RM 12 & 14.50

With the all day breakfast menu, though its near dinner time, we cant help but to order one set and share among ourselves. Hungry Jack Big Breakfast comes with Nachos, Eggs, ham, cheese sausage, Bagel, greens, mushrooms and tomatoes. Nachos comes with Thousand Island / Ranch Sauce and the milky small pan of scramble eggs are perfect!

Seems like its tough to cafe hop without driving around in Johor Bahru. On the good side, if you manage to drive around in Johor Bahru, with google map's aid, cafe hopping is definitely much easier this way!

For this round, it was an impromptu visit and we did not bring too much stomach space here, I hope to be back for their waffles.
