https://www.umakemehungry.com/2019/09/o-master-q.html

Recently, there were so much Johor Food flashing out in my friends and my social media pages that we could not resist any further, thus this is why we were here! We searched through the place for handmade noodle and was a tad lost due to the address given, nevertheless we found the place eventually.

O Master Q is located along the same stretch as our frequent visit massage place, Bangkok Spa.

Interior was rustic, just like any coffeeshop of  Singapore in the 1980s with its flooring tiled up by 1 x 1 cm square tiles in alternating colors (Greyish blue and White).

The stall is located at a prominent spot, right in front of the coffeeshop at one corner with bowls neatly stack and a refrigerator behind its shelfing. Besides the hand made Mee Hoon Kueh, there are other noodles for your choices.

Take a look at the master pulling off the Mee Hoon Kueh from the dough and into the pot of broth under the fire.

Each bowl was cooked individually and takes about 3 - 5 minutes. The main use of ingredients is fried crispy Ikan Billis. The soup version of Mee Hoon Kueh tasted pretty normal to me with a home cook taste.

Black fungus are good for health and they are also added as one of the ingredients. I bet this is the first time I ever had Mee Hoon Kueh with meat ball in it.

Dried version is most preferred by the diners from our observations. Mee Hoon Kueh was served in a mixture of sweet black sauce and sesame oil with ingredients slightly different from the soup version. It was topped with generous amount of fried Ikan billis, fried Wanton Skin, cut black fungus, meat ball, "Mani" Vegetables, Kang Kong and egg.

While it may not be that fantastic till we will purposely make our way back again, I will say they are still worth the try for their traditional, old-school Malaysian style kind of noodle and a decent broth.

Among all ingredients, I find that they could have omitted the minced meat and as a minced meat lover, I'm kind of disappointed here.

On a side note, some of the websites mentioned that they open at 11 am but when I was there during that time, staff of the same coffeshop told me that handmade noodle stall will open about 12 pm. Since its located near Bangkok Spa, those who feel hungry before or after their session can take a chance to visit O Master Q Mee Hoon Kueh since its a stone throw away.

Bev C'afe OK Jul 23, 2018

A walk near 15 minutes away from City Square Johor along Jalan Wong Ah Fook would be interesting if you ever explore the Cafe available there. With the good exchange rate, cross border cafe hopping as a weekend activity has turned pretty popular these days. Not only that these hipster cafes are increasing in our neighbouring country near the borders. I love the surprises thrown to me everytime we enter the cafe. Retaining the worn down and old facade, it quite interesting how their interior is furnished for the own style of cafe.

Chancing by Bev C, we would not have known that the upper storey is double up as a cafe from the clothing store till we walked pass a sign stating that. Interior is pretty spacious for a fashion boutique shop with a few racks of clothing each at one side of its perimeter.

With a little bit of backgroud, Bev C is a clothing label with original design since 2013. They have every piece of clothing designed from the sketch and scratch. They have a philosophy believing in "Seeking you own style" rather that cultivating a culture of "following the trend blindly". Further more adding a line saying Own your Style or Stay Naked.

It is unpretentious in its rustic outlook with flooring tiled with the olden kind of 1 x 1 cm square tiles. I walked up the flight of wooden stairs with additional care as I heard them creaked and moan under my feet, fearing that the steps might be not sturdy enough to accommodate my weight.

Seating is pretty limited with narrow walkways however I would say that the ambiance are not too bad. With a packed Saturday afternoon, we were ushered to the seats by the windows looking out to a big tree as well as the opposite shop houses.

While waiting for the food, we inquire the service staff for the latest password knowing that the previous "giveme5dollar" has been changed. We were given yet another password that will never fail to give a smile on our face, that is "askyourfriend".

Doing the so mainstream thing that everyone here does, we ordered their Chocolate Mint Pie which gain quite a number of good comments by the past patrons. Chocolate Mint Pie was served on an IKEA wooden board. The pie was totally out of my expectation for it looks so cool in its beveled minty green topped with a dark brown cookie. With a distinctive layer of mint from the top and bottom filled with chocolaty flavored pie cradled by the charcoal crust, such combination was perfect for us as pie was not too sweet.

Lemon Tea was frozen in cubes and served with a slice of lemon in a cup. Additional lemon tea is given in a separate flask. Taste is rather normal.

Perhaps we have more to talk about for the Butterfly Pea Cubes for that it was not very common quencher served in the Cafe. The cubes were frozen with its flower and stalks, not really suitable to put the cubes in your mouth unlike the Ice Cube Lemon Tea. It tasted a tad light and refreshing on its own. For more distinctive flavour, you may want to add the lime juice given to alter the taste.

There are still a number of Cafe that we yet to explore in that area. Each and every one has its own uniqueness. I don't mind coming back again, however given so much choices there, its more likely I would be another place during my next Cafe Session.

https://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/06/jwc-just-want-coffee-factory-30.html

As the name suggests, Just Want Coffee is located in an industrial area and to be precise, its housed in a Factory which is surrounded by containers and run down buildings.

Just Want Coffee - The Facgtory 30

Just Want Coffee - The Facgtory 30

The facade just reminds me of Wheeler's Yard in Singapore making use of industrial factory to run a cafe business. Though they shared the same industrial theme, Wheeler's Yard is more on Bicycles.

Just behind the entrance door, you will notice that even the door handle is partially made up of the coffee filter holder, impressive!

As soon as we swang the main door, we realised JWC is a 2 Storey refurbished place and with their cafe themed industrial. Take a look at the upper level railings, they are make up of pipings.

Over the counter, this food elevator has bring convenience to staff of the cafe. It reduces the working staff from carrying heavy dishes up and down in the cafe. Up at the ceiling, there are a number of sacks hanging above? Don't worry about it falling down as they are only stuffed with shredded papers.

There are long tables in the cafe, suitable for group gathering. Under the cozy lights and air conditioning environment, this place make it so comfortable to chill out especially over a hot weather outside.

Right Side of the Cafe

To me, the "Customer Menual" is designed to be more like a technical instruction Menu to operate machines instead. Of course, there are pages with their food menu in the mixture of the technical information.

The concrete screed wall and flooring is no stranger to an industrial environment. Not only that, with the steel basins, old school type of pipes and taps, everything fit well to the industrial theme, even the overhead lamp.

The cut of Tiramisu's served was generous but ultimately not to our liking as the entire piece of cake was kind of frozen and tough to cut. Totally not the kind of soft and chilly Tiramisu we have expected as its not as moist. However in terms of taste wise, its still pretty ordinary.

Texture of cake as described was really silky like Tofu. The cheese cake was supported by a thin layer of biscuit as its base. Tasted not too bad.

Having order the Luxurious Affogato, we get to see the entire process of making it in the video, involving naked flames over the alcohol.

Choco Powder on the glass of cold chocolate is more than enough, making up a thick layer at the top neutralizing the sweet chocolate with a tad of bitterly taste.

Cold Chocolate & Caramel Macchiato Cold - RM 12 & 14.50

With the all day breakfast menu, though its near dinner time, we cant help but to order one set and share among ourselves. Hungry Jack Big Breakfast comes with Nachos, Eggs, ham, cheese sausage, Bagel, greens, mushrooms and tomatoes. Nachos comes with Thousand Island / Ranch Sauce and the milky small pan of scramble eggs are perfect!

Seems like its tough to cafe hop without driving around in Johor Bahru. On the good side, if you manage to drive around in Johor Bahru, with google map's aid, cafe hopping is definitely much easier this way!

For this round, it was an impromptu visit and we did not bring too much stomach space here, I hope to be back for their waffles.

Have been patronising this place since a few years back. I was both shocked and happy to see the owners had expanded its small stall to an entire shop. Years back, they were operating along the walk way with their wok and a small stall and its quite prominent everytime we walked past.

Wah Cai 3 In 1 Chinese Cake Fried Durian

The stall is vegetarian friendly. With 3 in 1 Chinese Cake as signature, they do sell other items like Sweet potato, tapioca, banana, curry puff, green beam puff and yum puff.

People swarmed to the stall when the batch of 3 in 1 chinese cake was ready to purchased. As usual, the popular items gets sold out quickly.

Items were fried in batches and we had to wait for a long time before the next batch were ready. In the case, there were no fried banana and fried durian for us this time round as we need to wait for more than an hour. We bought the cempedak, fried chinese cake and 3 in 1 chinese cake.

The normal Chinese Cake (Nian Gao) is chewy and generous in its amount. It was thick and not too sweet. Best enjoyed when it is hot.

Normal Chinese Cake -

For the 3 in 1 Chinese Cake, it is make up of a slice of yam and sweet potato with Chinese Cake (Nian Gao) Sandwiched in between. You can see that them Deep frying the 3 in 1 Chinese Cake involved two or more times of frying.

In the picture, they fried the 3 in 1 bundle of chinese cake, there after the first round, they took the piping hot items out and remove the toothpick in the central and refried them again.

The second frying had given the 3 in 1 Chinese Cake a more presentable outlook. Its round with golden brown crispy crumbs outside.

The Chinese cake is very melty and holds both the yam and sweet potato in tact with its sticky nature.

Fried Cempedak was also fried till golden brown with crispy crust. It is quite interesting to have fruit serve in hot piping thin crust. However I still prefer the usual chilled Cempedak. Among all, though i do not have the chance to try the fried durian this round, I will vote for its original Chinese Cake and fried Durian.

Restoran Capitol Satay OK Jan 04, 2018

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/01/restoran-capitol-satay.html

In Malacca, besides hunting for Nyonya Food & Chicken Rice Balls, the other must eat will be Satay Celup. No trip will be complete without trying their signature dishes.

Given its popularity, many locals as well as tourists flocked to Restoran Capitol Satay and they are opened as early as 4pm. Even so, one is expected to wait in the queue.

Capitol Satay

Service of Capitol Satay is efficient. As soon as we got our seats, they are fast in replacing the bucket of peanut sauce from the previous diners. Soon other the replacement, you can see how these guys work in team to ladle up scoops of peanuts and sugar from the side benches and into our serving bucket.

Capitol Satay has an open buffet concept for diners to pick out their skewers to their tables. It's not very hygienic but that's the nature of satay celup. I noticed that the food's very fresh though, no stale, fishy smells or sour tastes.

Satay Celup's concept is buffet style and allow diners to pick out their skewers. There are a good varities of skwered seafood, vegetables and meat.

The gravy is thick and sweet. We dip all our skewers into the hot pot and over the fire waiting for it to be cooked. On a side note, i remembered the last round in Malacca, we had Satay Celup at another place and they will ask if we will like to reuse the peanut sauce or top up money for new peanut sauce. However in Capitol Satay, we were not sure if this bucket of peanut sauce is brand new.

With our seats so near their kitchen, we have peeped into the kitchen on how they prepare their food. Perhaps after one round and observing their surroundings, I find it hard for me to make a return.
