Lima Blas Smile Mar 04, 2013
Categories : Asian Variety | Restaurant

Lima Blas, graced with a gorgeously ornate interior & eye-catching details in every corner.

With outlets like Lima Blas, The Establishment, Pisco Bar & Table 23 surfacing on Mesui in recent months, this street _ home also to Palate Palette & No Black Tie _ is becoming the cooler, calmer alternative to Changkat Bukit Bintang.

Lima Blas' fare is commendable, though understandably less extensive than Amy Heritage's; start with the shrimp-topped 'pai tee,' nearly as lovely as these surroundings. At RM3 for two, it ranks among the most wallet-friendly food in this vicinity.

Chicken pongteh (RM10), fantastically fragrant & flavorful, possibly the best we've had in KL.

Cincaluk omelet (RM10), irreproachably fluffy, proving that Limablas isn't a tourist trap.

Eggplant (RM12), for some veggie nutrition. It was either this or lady's fingers.

Wait, there's kangkung too, but skip the run-of-the-mill belacan preparation & check out the amazingly addictive recipe served in "lemak keledek" (RM12).

Tepui Smile Feb 25, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Café

Some cafes deserve to draw crowds from dawn through dusk, but it might be a boon that one such place in Persiaran Ampang seems persistently empty, making it a refuge for the harried.

Stellar salads & sandwiches at sensational prices are Tepui's piece de resistance. For RM25, two can share a Venezuelan Maracaibo salad of fantastically fresh tomatoes, beetroot, oranges, onions, baby rocket & hard-boiled eggs drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.

Nicoise salad, dramatically overhauled, with a flavorful tuna mix topped with a whole egg, olives, oranges, mustard, nuts & tarragon dressing.

Pork platter: a board packed with Parma ham, toasted multigrain bread, pickled relish & condiments. The most expensive order here, at about RM35.

Eggs & oranges make repeated appearances, but in variations that ensure that customers won't be bored. Love the super-creamy scrambled eggs on tomato & toast.

French chicken terrine pate (about RM25), a terrifically thick spread with bread.

Latte & detox juice of green apple, green capsicum, cucumber & celery.

Tepui only has two people on its service team who do everything, including prepare the food; they move with exceptional efficiency.

1919 @ Yap Kwan Seng  Smile Sep 13, 2012

Round Two at 1919 @ Jalan Yap Kwan Seng.

Chicken floss-coated pumpkin strips. These hot little babies very nearly melt in the mouth, flooding the taste buds with sweet savoriness. We wish we could cook up a batch at home and munch on them on the couch while catching up on "The Walking Dead."

A riot of flavors: mango kerabu salad in fried yam ring. Also a textural treat; the crunch of the kerabu is a delicious counterpoint for the yam's yielding softness.

Battered eggplant. Crispy without being chewy, juicy but not the slightest bit greasy.

House-made bean curd stuffed with shrimp and veggies. Tofu fans will like this healthy choice.

Mutton in a surprisingly sweet mint sauce. Interesting, but the bony meat remains gamy.

Yes, we have wine. At reasonable rates too, if memory serves.

Toastina Smile Sep 12, 2012

For Asian delights of a Malaysian bent, take a 10-minute walk to Sheraton Imperial Hotel, where Toastina serves lunchtime favorites. There are hits and misses here nowadays, but the chicken rice is surprisingly satisfying for a hotel-cooked version.

Toastina's Penang prawn kuey teow soup is thick and tangy.

Stir-fried chicken with cashews. Will stuff the tummy, won't stun the taste buds.

Skip Toastina's wan tan mee and head to a kopitiam instead if you want some.

Chef Tony's Popcorn  Smile Sep 12, 2012
Categories : Stall / Warung

Chef Tony's first popped up in Manila six years ago before spreading across the Philippines and then to Singapore; finally, this premium popcorn is now available for regular customers in KL.

How to build the perfect popcorn? Start with non-genetically modified U.S. corn grown in Omaha, steer clear of chemicals but scour the world for ingredients like Belgian butter, French herbs and Japanese green tea to flavor your popcorn.

A "small" tub of popcorn that two can happily share starts from nearly RM14 for a basic caramel; other varieties are fun without being over-the-top, including cheddar, white and dark chocolate, mocha, parmesan and cinnamon.

his Belgian Butter, mixed with honey-roasted walnuts, is very nice; biting into it, a distinct taste of corn evolves into a subtle sweetness before exploding into sinful savoriness.

The popcorn tubs are a terrific size for stuffing into a bag and sneaking into a multiplex. Or buy some and bring them to Tate at The Intermark, to nibble on while watching Chaplin movies flicker on the bar's screens and sipping a New York Flip (maker's mark, tawny port, demerara syrup, heavy cream, whole egg).

Kraphao Fragrancy (hendrick's gin, thai basil, lemon juice, sugar, egg white, celery bitters).

Ernest Hemingway's creation and favorite: Death in the Afternoon (absinthe, veuve clicquot yellow label champagne, lemon twist).

Chef Tony's Popcorn is sold at KL's Fahrenheit 88 and Wangsa Walk and in Johor Baru.
