Butter-up OK Jun 12, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Steaks / Chops | Burgers / Sandwiches

Butter Up, a pretty nice-looking cafe in Seri Kembangan.

A constellation of cakes, bread & pastries lights up the counters; interesting varieties include crispy buns laced with longan fruit & raisins, plus others tinged with cream cheese & walnuts or cranberries, coconut & almond flakes.

Hot food is available too; everything from pasta with chopped lamb, carrots & thyme to pizzas with shrimp & squid. Butter Up's version of Eggs Atlantic is not too bad: Poached eggs with smoked salmon on English muffins with sabayon sauce, paired with a hearty portion of potato wedges for only RM11.

Butter Up's coffee is not quite memorable except for what comes with it: a very cute spoon-shaped butter cookie.

Khrua Thai OK Jun 12, 2014
Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Seafood

Only four or five restaurants are open so far at the One City Skypark 10th-floor rooftop, so hungry customers have few options, making Khrua Thai a venue that can get crowded as the evening progresses.

Steamed mixed seafood in foil (RM28 before taxes). The food's OK, though portions are certainly not generous, so customers might need to either spend at least RM40 per person or risk leaving a bit peckish.

Deep-fried soft-shell crab. RM48 before taxes for three flat ones? Not cool, though to be fair, the illustrated menu did indicate that there would only be three pieces of crab served.

Salted egg yolk squid (RM30). Lots of squid recipes on the menu, from butter-fried to curry to steamed with lemon, tom yam to kam heong. For better or worse, the menu extends beyond being purely Thai.

Stir-fried paku-pakis with garlic (RM18). Capably prepared is probably the easy description for this.

Caffe Bene OK Jun 12, 2014
Categories : Korean | Café | Juices / Bubble Tea / Tea / Yogurt | Ice Cream / Froyo / Gelato | Desserts

South Korean coffeehouse chain Caffebene unveiled its first two branches in Malaysia this year, bringing its people-pleasing selection to Sunway Pyramid & Solaris Mont Kiara's SohoKL, with plans for the next outlet in Penang.

Liege waffles _ an increasingly familiar sight on KL's cafe menus _ are among the specialities here. This version crowned with 'tteok' rice cake & nuts (RM13) makes for a uniquely Belgian-Korean collaboration, with the crusty base & the glutinous topping supplying a dense chew.

'Patbingsu,' the Korean shaved-ice dessert with red bean paste is available in various forms here; the one with Caffebene's own-made coffee gelato (RM10.80) makes the most sense to try here. Other options include strawberry bingsu or cookies & cream.

Even an affogato (RM8) that might seem boldly experimental with cream-cheese-flavoured gelato turns out to taste safely conventional, since nothing here is strikingly robust, for better or worse.

Unfortunately, that characteristic makes Caffebene's Kenyan single-origin hand-drip coffee (RM8) border on blandly sterile.

The silver lining is that the beverages here won't taste too sweet: the misugaru non-coffee 'latte' (RM12) is pretty enjoyable, a creamy, shake-like blend of toasted grains.

Juices, yoghurt smoothies & assorted teas are offered too; all in all, there's no reason why Caffebene shouldn't be a success in a nation where Starbucks & Korean pop culture enjoy widespread appeal.

Ayers Rock Butcher and Grill OK Jun 12, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops | Burgers / Sandwiches

The latest branch of the Ayers Rock steak chain.

Plenty of meat available; unfortunately, wine isn't served at Ayers Rock.

Still, the steak's satisfying, a quality cut that's flavourful & juicy, prepared competently & partnered heartily with potatoes & a fresh-tasting salad.

Black Bull OK Jun 12, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Bar & Pub | Steaks / Chops | Burgers / Sandwiches

Black Bull, a spacious restaurant & bar with a few fun facilities

The tapas selection includes calamari with harissa & garlic aioli sauce (RM25), a recipe that kinda sounded better than it looked & tasted. Perhaps several of the other items might fare better: there's everything from Tex-Mex burgers with jalapeno peppers & tomato salsa to seared duck breast with red wine reduction.

The cocktails could be more potent: Amaretto Espresso Martini (amaretto, kahlua, smirnoff vodka, espresso) ...

... & Toblerone (creme de cacao, frangelico, bailey's irish).
