Happer OK Mar 15, 2014

Happer should also satisfy whenever the urge for cracking open a bottle of red or white is high.

Happer's menu also strives to be crowd-pleasing; there's guaranteed to be demand for a decent Hokkien Mee, even one where crispy pork lard is absent.

Mini pork burgers with an unexpected accompaniment of tempura-like battered veggies, also satisfactory for stuffing the stomach. Won't win awards, but that's not what this neighborhood hangout is out to do.

Caveat: When we visited, Happer was not serving wine by the glass. That's unfortunate, but that should change at least for Happer ...

... since an Enomatic wine dispenser is part of the furnishing here.

Galerie Du Vin OK Mar 15, 2014

A few nice touches to the decor of this fairly friendly restaurant, casual enough despite its wine-focused theme to make for a fuss-free weeknight meal.

The menu revolves around meat & seafood, including competently prepared roast pork.

Catfish, supposedly with a Portuguese influence in the recipe. The fish is OK, while the sauce is creamy & flavorsome; ultimately, one could do far worse than eat here.

The range of wine is fine too, offering something for most booze-loving budgets.

Espresso Bar OK Mar 15, 2014

Espresso Bar, a diminutive den with air-conditioned & alfresco seating at Subang Soho (near Empire Shopping Gallery, within a five-minute driving distance).

It's a pleasantly amiable place too; simple snacks are available, but they're probably not really the reason that Espresso Bar's fans like this place.

The latte's OK, but maybe a little too scalding-hot & one-dimensional in milkiness.

Coffee Ink OK Mar 12, 2014

Coffee Ink, which probably targets a relatively mature clientele.

Baileys mille-crepe, not particularly boozy but still enjoyable enough.

Try the "Dirty Chai," Coffee Ink's tea-spiked latte. A fun change from the usual. The balance between art & commerce takes on a new meaning here too.

Sausage & Ribs Shack OK Mar 12, 2014

Casually carnivorous; not a bad stop on weekends when meat cravings are most acute.

This Shack's name & food are straight to point; start with a plate of mixed sausages, 350 grams for RM27. The restaurant makes its own, sufficiently juicy & flavorsome for a satisfactory chew, & even supplies them to other outlets (though we've been asked to not say which ones).

BBQ spice-rubbed pork ribs, RM55 for a full rack (the portion pictured is half), reasonably tasty too & nicely roasted. These are regular ones; the restaurant also sometimes serves promotional Iberico ribs, similar to what we've had at Section 14's Burger & Ribs, another suburban eatery.

Wine is not available, but customers can bring their own with no corkage charged.
