Ecole P Smile May 05, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

this Damansara Utama cafe shoots straight to the top of the class with a back-to-school vibe that's colorfully charming & whimsically evocative.

The owners of Ecole P have done their homework, flooding this space with detail-crammed chalkboards, tables & stools that might remind many Malaysians of their primary school years.

Ecole P marks a collaboration by Steven Heng & Ilrene Tee, both alumni of Taylor's University's hospitality courses who've sought to create a cafe where the carefree innocence & imagination of childhood spring stirringly back to life. The shelves are well-stocked with writing utensils, revision booklets & even tiny trophies (highest achievement in mathematics?).

A salad comes served with savory-sugary haw flakes, plus a Spongebob backpack & a case that opens to reveal cutlery instead of color pencils.

Ecole P's soft-launch menu remains limited, but top marks must be handed to the fried rice with salted egg yolk crumble, green peas & deliciously juicy chicken chop. Prices are fair; the salad & rice constitute a set lunch that costs RM18.80 nett.

Love the presentation for the beverages; this peanut butter smoothie, mixed with ice cream & tiramisu lady fingers for a textural grit, proves worth its many calories.

Penang's Lighthouse Coffee forms the foundation for Ecole P's lattes.

Our report card for Ecole P ('Ecole' is French for school; the 'P' stands for primary): A distinctive effort with thoughtfully prepared food. Keep up the very nice work.

Royal Satay Celup @ Damansara Smile Sep 06, 2012

Categories : Malaysian variety | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops | Mixed rice

My favorite food from my hometown of Malacca has made very little headway in the Klang Valley, but here's hoping that Royal Satay Celup will help change that.

This Damansara Utama outlet's bountifully stocked fridge beckons to us with familiar temptations evocative of many a satay celup meal in the 1990s.

The most important ingredient, cockles, is present. Perhaps not as plump as we might prefer; when it comes to cockles, size certainly matters.

Crullers, kangkong, pork balls, intestines and innards, bound for boiling pots of peanut gravy.

Hygiene-conscious customers, note that each table is supplied with sauce that's fresh and free. But it's less chunky than expected, with a sour-spiciness that tastes Thai.

Still, this is a commendable effort that comes close to replicating the Malaccan experience, thanks to the cornucopia of crab claws, squid and prawns.

Sevencups Smile Mar 12, 2014

You know those scenes where a thirsty deer approaches the edge of a pond & drinks the water, content & completely at peace? That's how we felt after hoofing it to Seven Cups, a sanctuary that deserves to draw herds of doe-eyed, coffee-desirous devotees.

The cafe itself is deliberately spare & distraction-free, serving (for us, at least) as a reminder to remove both the physical & emotional clutter from our lives. It feels fresh & familiar all at once; Seven Cups' sole dubious decision is putting Lana Del Rey's 'Born To Die' on its playlist, much to our sunset-time sadness.

If Seven Cups' innate cheeriness isn't sufficient to sweeten your day, its pineapple cheesecake & lemon slice should. Seven Cups is meant to be a coffee-&-cakes cafe; while a quiche could make the occasional cameo appearance, holding our breath for Eggs Benedict might prove futile.

Psst, here's a secret: Cafe co-owner Eve Von & her team sometimes conceal stashes of cake behind the counter for their personal consumption. If no carrot cake or red velvets seem visible, thick-skinned customers could attempt to very gently coax them out.

The coffee's a choice one; Seven Cups currently uses Singapore-based Nylon Coffee roaster's Four Chairs seasonal espresso blend, showcasing the labor of farms in Nicaragua & El Salvador.

Eve Von was initially lukewarm about having affogato on the menu, but we're grateful that cooler heads prevailed. On the other end of the thermometer, hot chocolate's also available, constructed with cocoa from Bangsar's Dip N Dip.

Miss Ellie  Smile Sep 17, 2013

Its calm facade might make Miss Ellie Tea House look like a charming Cameron Highlands cafe, but mercifully, this hidden gem is only a half-hour from KL's center, nestled on a suburban street where parking's aplenty in Taman Melawati.

Can't call it an English tea without scones: pastry chef extraordinaire Justin Wong offers not only the regular plain ones, but also rich chocolate varieties.

Creme brulee might seem like a cliche, but here's one of KL's best, made with real vanilla pods instead of essence, for luxurious flavor & fragrance.

Gooey goodness: Waistline-wrecking salted caramel choc fudge cupcakes.

Passion fruit tart, beautifully balanced somewhere between sweetness &, well, tartness.

Strawberry & white chocolate tart, delivering creamy-crispy mouthfuls of bliss.

Coffee 5 Cups Smile May 02, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Café | Seafood | Juices / Bubble Tea / Tea / Yogurt

Coffee & cakes with a view: Coffee 5 Cups is the latest entry to Plaza Damas 3, blessed with an unparalleled vantage point for surveying the national palace.

More importantly, this cafe is operated with integrity by people who are passionately involved in social activism. Their coffee's freshly brewed with hand-picked organic Balinese beans, ensuring fair trade that benefits the coffee farming communities.

Full meals will be served post-elections, starting May 11. Expect everything from open-face sandwiches to sushi & noodles (one of the owners hails from Hokkaido).

For now, house-made cakes like sour cream cinnamon ones (RM6.50) are a true treat here.

Pumpkin syrup cake, moist & lightly sweet, beautiful with a scoop of ice cream.

Coffee's reasonably robust; cold caffe latte (RM9.50) hits the spot on a hot afternoon.

Plunger coffee, French press coffee, cafetiere coffee. What's in a name; that which we call coffee by any other name would taste as tantalizing.

Roasted barley tea, or "mugicha" in Japanese, is one cooling, caffeine-free choice here.
