Myth Eatery & Bar Cry Jun 13, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Bar & Pub | Pizza/Pasta

Myth Eatery & Bar, the new hotspot at M Boutique Hotel. Note though, the "bar" part of the restaurant's name isn't totally suitable for now, as wine isn't presently served here. Myth is an intricately designed outlet that'll leave Instagram addicts hyperventilating; every corner, every chair, every cushion is worth admiring.

The unagi pizza (RM35 before taxes) was well-laden with eel, but the flavours clashed mightily with & were ultimately overpowered by the tomato sauce & cheese. The crust was reminiscent of some strange sort of crunchy-airy biscuit that disintegrates on each bite.

Patisserie Boutique Cafe OK Jun 13, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Pizza/Pasta | Sweets/Snack

Patisserie Boutique is a fresh entry on the row that now contains what looks like the highest concentration of hipster cafés in Ipoh's Old Town; it tries to bring a feel of Paris to this former tin-mining city, with walls that bear meticulously created images of the Eiffel Tower, Champs-Élysées and Arc de Triomphe.

The menu's not exactly a Francophile's fantasy though; lunch specials cross into the Italian border, comprising the likes of spaghetti tossed with raisins & pine nuts (RM16)

... & another with smoked duck (RM18) as well as minestrone soup & lasagna. Well-executed enough, though the setting might be the real star, not the cuisine.

True to the outlet's name, desserts & pastries are prominently showcased; the choc meringue cake is enjoyably light & airy ...

... while the crème brûlée is undistinguished. It's nevertheless fun to eat this here while instrumental versions of La Vie En Rose & La Mer play in the background.

Garvy's OK Jun 13, 2014

Garvy's is interesting, but head here prepared for the trappings of a fine-dining experience

White chocolate lava cake with pineapple compote & vanilla ice cream. Tasty, very nearly meriting the RM40 price tag. The creamy molten centre had rich complexities (a hint of caramel?), but one of our main waiters insisted it was white chocolate & nothing more.

Burps & Giggles Part 2 Smile Oct 17, 2012   (Related Review)

Categories : Western variety | Café | Burgers / Sandwiches | Sweets/Snack

Lamb, cheese, red peppers, onions, olives and mint yogurt (RM18). The picture says it all.

Customers with smaller stomachs can opt for sliders like this mini-burger with chicken and egg.

2012 was supposed to be the Year of the Canele in KL. While that never happened, it's nevertheless nice to nibble on these French custard pastries.

There's no escaping them: Macarons have invaded Ipoh too. Very soon they'll reach Kangar.

B&G offers wine, a welcome sight after a nearly three-hour drive here.

Alas, designated drivers must stick to soft drinks and coffee (or must they? hmmmm).

B&G gets packed on weekend afternoons; waiting for a table might be necessary.

B&G is around the corner from Ng Seksan's Sekeping Kong Heng in Ipoh's Old Town. Rumors have it that more eateries will open here, plus a cooking school potentially run by The BIG Group.

Burps & Giggles Part 1 Smile Oct 17, 2012

Itching for a day trip out of KL? Consider Ipoh, where Burps & Giggles has fast become one of this northern city's most buzz-worthy cafes.

Opened in early September by Julie Song of Indulgence, B&G occupies a colonial-era building that once housed a dressmaker's store among other businesses.

Thanks to its mix of old-world charm and contemporary coolness, folks will enjoy exploring B&G, preserved for posterity with marvelous murals and fun furnishing.

But B&G isn't relying solely on its setting to lure customers; its menu is laudably inventive, loaded with light bites like mu shu lamb folded in mantao pancake (RM8).

Pumpkin-and-tomato wrap (RM15), swelling with nature's soft, sweet harvest.

Duck pate with biscuits (RM8). For the most part, no unreasonably steep prices here.

B&G's food can't be easily pigeonholed: it's as eclectically cluttered as the outlet, but there's a Mediterranean influence in recipes like these spiced beans and lamb sausages with pesto-laced egg custard and ciabatta toast.

Burgers are a highlight here; the recommendation is the Bam-Bam (RM28), a stomach-stuffing whopper of a Wagyu beef patty, egg, cheese, tomato, beetroot, carrots, horseradish and onions.
