Wood & Steel Cafe & Gallery OK Mar 16, 2014

Wood & Steel, a combo of a cafe & a store that sells art & furniture, including some supplied to Sri Hartamas' Podgy & The Banker.

Cheesecake, enjoyably edible. Wood & Steel should also be serving brunches by now; we were here during the recent extended weekend, but when we asked a barista what hot food would be available, she was only willing to say, scrambled eggs.

The coffee? Definitely drinkable.

Inaho Sushi OK Mar 15, 2014
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant

Inaho, the sister restaurant of Minori; it's a bright, cheerful addition to The Curve, with a hits-&-misses menu of everything from sashimi to skewered meat.

Good news first: Prices at Inaho are lower than Minori; not a surprise, since Inaho's in a mall, while Minori's at the Royale Bintang Damansara hotel. Thus, a substantial serving of sea urchin costs only RM35++ at Inaho.

Grilled scallops with mentaiko cod roe mayo & mushrooms (RM18++). Tasty snack.

top-flight otoro is a remarkable RM55++ for three thick pieces, but both fall a bit short of what the best cuts can be. It's a trade-off that could nonetheless prove fair for some customers, sacrificing some of the pleasure to ease some of the pain for the wallet.

There might be a drop-off in quality here; three slices of chutoro medium-fatty tuna clocks in at RM38++ ..

surprisingly drained-of-flavor-&-juice anago sea eel sushi

No qualms though about endorsing sushi that's terrifically topped with salmon flesh & roe (RM6++ per piece).

pretty-with-prawn sushi is alright. To nitpick further, the sushi rice here can seem somewhat dry & bland, forcing the toppings to struggle to compensate.

Sparkling sweet sake, perhaps not the ideal accompaniment for sashimi, sushi or skewers.

From the streams of Pahang to the streets of Kuala Lumpur: behold, the wildest of Malaysia's freshwater fish have landed on Samudra's tables.

Outlet owner Hishammuddin Hamzah's family has been in the river-fish business for decades; his contacts ensure Samudra's finny fare is trucked into KL twice weekly from peninsular Malaysia's most forested state.

Ikan Krai in the classic masak lemak tempoyak fashion that's pungently an acquired taste. We've come to like it though; it's one of a kind, it's kinda addictive.

Ikan Tapah, another type of large catfish, fried here with turmeric. Great for folks who prefer their fish meaty, with much bite to it.

Check out the cow brains instead (RM6), not for the squeamish.

More cholesterol? Can't resist this one; creamy poached duck eggs (RM6).

Siput sedut (RM10), fun at first, but the effort of sucking for not much reward sucks after awhile.

Not everything at Samudra swims; fried pigeon is also available (RM7), but this won't fly for folks who want something more than mediocre.

Happer OK Mar 15, 2014

Happer should also satisfy whenever the urge for cracking open a bottle of red or white is high.

Happer's menu also strives to be crowd-pleasing; there's guaranteed to be demand for a decent Hokkien Mee, even one where crispy pork lard is absent.

Mini pork burgers with an unexpected accompaniment of tempura-like battered veggies, also satisfactory for stuffing the stomach. Won't win awards, but that's not what this neighborhood hangout is out to do.

Caveat: When we visited, Happer was not serving wine by the glass. That's unfortunate, but that should change at least for Happer ...

... since an Enomatic wine dispenser is part of the furnishing here.

Galerie Du Vin OK Mar 15, 2014

A few nice touches to the decor of this fairly friendly restaurant, casual enough despite its wine-focused theme to make for a fuss-free weeknight meal.

The menu revolves around meat & seafood, including competently prepared roast pork.

Catfish, supposedly with a Portuguese influence in the recipe. The fish is OK, while the sauce is creamy & flavorsome; ultimately, one could do far worse than eat here.

The range of wine is fine too, offering something for most booze-loving budgets.
