Good CKT in JB Smile Nov 30, 2013

This CKT is pretty good - plenty of wok hei, and decent amount of shrimp (fresh enough, but not super fresh). Quite wet (prefer it drier), spicy (good), oily (reasonably so) and served piping hot. Not very filling, but got some pork lard so that's good.

I prefer if it had some lap cheong, or a bit more shrimp. As usual, no siham for me, so I benchmark all my CKT on the same level. Frankly, I can get better ones in KL.

Katong Laksa Smile Nov 30, 2013

Most of my meals during my primary school days was Singaporean laksa at my school canteen. All that while, I never knew what type of laksa it was, and thought there was only one type. Once I left Johor, I never saw it again, until I returned one day for a trip in JB.

The curry was made with coconut milk and was light and fragrant, and spicy at the back of your throat. The ingredients in the laksa were fish balls, tofu, tau pok, and fish cakes, which were all just very normal, but I really enjoyed the simplicity of this dish.

Famous Beef Noodles Smile Nov 26, 2013

My most recent visit to this "famous" beef noodles shop in JB has left me perplexed. There was hardly a soul in sight, save for a solitary old uncle at the next table, who seemed to be a regular. No throngs of hungry locals, no curious tourists. What happened to this famous beef noodles shop?

I had a bowl, and has plenty of tender beef, with rich beef broth served on the side. The vinegar chilli sauce that accompanied as condiment tasted fresh and intense. There was enough of everything, and prices were reasonable, as far as any dish with lots of good beef goes, especially considering this shop's proximity to our neighbouring city-state.

Good... but perhaps unexciting. Has the standard gone down, or have I (we?) just gotten bored? You decide.

Fried carrot cake OK Nov 30, 2013

You can't get any really good fried carrot cake in KL, and as far as my experience goes, you pretty much can't go wrong in JB, but apparently this doesn't hold 100% true. While this carrot cake is not horrible, it's not great either. Too salty, which is from salt, not the "chai tau", and the carrot cake itself is not as firm as I'd prefer. Lots of wok hei, but nothing special.
