Best lamb shank ever! Smile Nov 27, 2013

I'll get straight to the point - Serai's lamb shank is the absolute best I've ever had.

First, the meat is super tender... like, literally fall-off-the-bone tender. The sauce is reminiscent (and inspired by) a Moroccan-style lamb shank sauce. The sauce is tomato-based, and tastes lemonny, and really goes very well with the lamb. There's a bed of hidden mash under there, which soaks up the sauce and dripping lamb fat very wonderfully.

The Prime Burger Smile Nov 27, 2013

Would you pay RM120 for a burger, before tax and service charge, if it weren't made of gold? Well, that's exactly what this is. I decided I couldn't just go on in life without trying this mammoth of a burger out.

Standing at about 300g, this burger is only about 1.5x the size of a standard restaurant-size burger. The beef is wagyu beef, and was extremely tender and juicy. Flavour-wise, it was not particularly tastier than other burgers. I mean, at this price, one would have elevated expectations.

It's served with foie gras, so it's got that going for it. The foie gras was very nicely done, and balanced against the beef very well. So soft, it's like a paste.

Verdict? Very good, but just not worth more than 5x the price of a normal burger.

Eat like an American Smile Nov 22, 2013

While Betty's is famous for its pork burgers (rightfully so; even since the days long before pork burgers or even burgers were a "thing"), they proudly offer many other pork dishes that stand its equal. Among them, my favourite being the soft-bone ribs. You know the part of the ribs where the cartilage is? Yeap, that's the one! Soft, juicy, sweet. If you're a fan of cartilage, there's plenty of that to chomp on; but I'm a more "normal" and only eat the meat - of which there is also plenty.

While the restaurant does feel a little rushy (you get in, you get seated, you get served, you get full, you get the bill, you get out), time seems to move slower when I'm having their soft-bone ribs. It's served with a cup of gravy, but I find myself torn between enjoying the meat in its unadulterated form, or with the super savoury gravy (I usually end up having most of it on its own, and then using the gravy for my fries).

So we've got gravy, and we've got fries - so why not order some FRIES WITH GRAVY and go CRAZY? Boldly dubbed "Dog Food", this is Betty's response to KFC's Cheesy Wedges - except far more enjoyable, and in a far larger serving portion. Don't wait for it to get cold, though, as the cheese tends to clump up. The fries are soft and the cheese is abundant and gooey. The sauce tastes creamy - I can't put my finger on exactly what it is; but I know it's something that goes great with potatoes and perhaps even a chicken chop (which you shouldn't bother ordering at Betty's, because pork is king here).

Special mention for their lemonade! I rarely order drinks anywhere, but at RM2.50, it's great value and tastes really good. To put it into context, it is cheaper and tastier than some drinks at many food courts or coffee shops!

Huck's Secret Garden Smile Jul 02, 2012   (Related Review)

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Group/Family dining | Private Party

Huck's cafe is a semi-private supper club. That is, you make a booking and you pay a fixed price for a leisurely full course meal at his very beautiful bungalow at Bangsar.

Appetizers are not included in the price, but are considered "free". It may vary, but we got some crackers with some sweet pickled tomatoes (I think) and sesame seeds.

First drink was a thai syrup that was quite refreshing, but quickly finished because I was very thirsty after the appetizers.

For my soup, I chose mushroom. It was chunky and extremely tasty. Perhaps the best mushroom soup I ever had.

Second drink was a ginger-lemongrass iced tea - very appetizing and had a zing to it.

My choice of (pre-ordered) main course was cottage pie. Jackpot! The potatoes were thoughtfully chunky and baked till golden-brown - the outside was a little crispy, and the insides, super soft and chunky. Underneath that layer was the most melty, beef (which was quite fatty but desirably so). This is the pie I've been looking for all my life! Excuse the drama, but this is a significant milestone in my life. The pie was so big, it filled 2 people very easily. But at Huck's there's no such thing as 1 main to share - it's one full course per person, because he limits the number of guests - therefore each guest equals to one full course.

I would come here again and again on merit of this pie alone.

The durian mudpie was also absolutely divine. Cold, creamy, rich, and full of durian taste; thoughtfully topped off with peanuts (though I suspect macadamias would've been better), this dessert was an absolute delight; but despite how perfect it was, it couldn't match the climax of the cottage pie.

Finally, my choice of old-school Hainanese-style coffee. It was very strong and is exactly how every morning coffee should be. I sweetened it with just a half teaspoon of brown sugar.

RM88 nett and I was explodingly full and satisfied beyond anything else. Huck's food is made very thoughtfully, and this visit would be my first among many over the years.

Tiramizulu Smile Jun 13, 2012   (Related Review)

It feels a little awkward for me to admit that the best tiramisu I ever had was at an African restaurant. Have I not been to enough Italian restaurants? Does nobody know how to make a good tiramisu? Do I have terrible taste? I bombard myself with these questions while I enjoy the wonder of the tiramizulu at Out of Africa.

Yes, it is real tiramisu - with Amarula and brandy; I think tiramisu without alcohol is a sham!

It's a tiny little portion, but delicious enough that the RM22 is worth it. Just the right balance of cake base and mascarpone cheese that makes everything light and fluffy; but it would all mean nothing if the cake base isn't soaked with Amarula (which gives a strong coffee-taste) and brandy (which gives caramelish sweetness and a woody aroma). Of course, the right amount of cocoa powder is important too, and they didn't fall short here either.

The final product is the initial creaminess, quickly followed by powdery chocolate texture and flavour, then the light cheese taste, followed by an intense burst of what tastes like caramel coffee with a strangely pleasant bitter aftertaste. It's that bitter aftertaste that makes you wanna dig in to counter with more sweetness - and that's the vicious delicious cycle.

*bows* lol
