Wanting some dessert on a weekend afternoon, we decided to try some of AJ's offerings at his restaurant.

The pulut with serawa durian is really good. Well, I'm not so much a fan of the pulut (I just don't enjoy Malay pulut that much), but I loved the serawa durian, which was very thick, creamy, and sweet. The sweetness wasn't overwhelming, as AJ likes to keep it moderately sweet, and the durian fibres were abundant.

The cekodok pisang is also good. Less oily that the average, but not as rich with banana as my mother's; but we loved.

Invariably, I just have to have my sirap bandung here. It's so unbelievably milky and refreshing. One glass is never enough, but I just have to stop at one, for the sake of my waistline, and to save two and a half bucks

Unusual fusion Smile Jul 01, 2012   (Related Review)

I absolutely love the stuffed jalapenos at Urban Spoon. Stuffed with cream cheese, breaded, and deep fried, the outside is cripsy but not oily; and the jalapano is softened and sweetened by the heat, but still retains its potent heat that slowly creeps up on your throat when you're eating it. The cream cheese gives a rich, creamy flavour that also serves to nullify some of the creeping heat.

The carrot and orange soup tastes nothing like it sounds (thankfully!). The texture of the fibrous carrot combined with the sweetness of the orange makes it an interesting base for some juicy shrimp and cabbages. It is savoury and does not taste like any fruit at all (not even the orange - just the sweetness and acidity is there).

Unusually interesting cod Smile Jul 01, 2012

I normally don't order fish from a western menu, but I was told that this cod is a must-try and a best-seller. When I tried it, I was convinced. The cod is nicely seared, topped off with chicken floss and served on a bed of grilled vegetables.

What makes it stand out is the sauce. The sauce is made of lots of ingredients, but I could identify balsamic vineger, cinnamon, and some hints of spices here and there. The result is an aromatically sweet sauce with subtle notes coming from plenty of herbs and spices. The contribution of flavour from cinnamon is noticeable, and is perhaps the most important ingredient in making this cod dish pop.

This 1 is Annie 1 Smile Jun 29, 2012   (Related Review)

The signboard at Annie 1 Kopitiam claims that they serve Menglembu's famous wantan mee. I've been to Menglembu many times during my university days, but have never come across a really good wantan mee there.

Evidently, I have been eating at the wrong places in Menglembu. The wantan mee at Annie 1 is perhaps one of the best I ever had. Well, the noodles were typically sweet and salty with the soy-based sauce and were slightly springy; but it's the char siew that really takes this dish home.

The char siew was ultra tender and melty, with loads of melted pork fat goodness. Okay, not the healthiest of meals but can't say I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. Even the sui kaos were big and juicy.

I like that they have a service bell you can press - no having to endure the frustration of not being able to get quick service. That's good, because it can get very crowded here, even at 2.30pm on a weekend afternoon... and I can see why now!

Spending per head: Approximately RM7.50

Besto Pesto Smile Jun 28, 2012   (Related Review)

Most of my experiences with pesto is where pesto is like a watery sauce that's used to line a pizza base or drench some pasta; but Topshelf redefined what I expect of pesto.

Rich in consistency, it holds its own shape, much like peanut butter except not quite so sticky-gooey. Rich in herby flavours and creamy in texture, the pesto is an aromatic and indulgent sauce and feels almost like an independent dish.

Toasted pine nuts give a lot of nutty aroma to the dish, despite being small in quantity; and the shaved parmesan gives a mild sharpness and heavy mouthfeel to the dish.

The serving size isn't very big, but the richness makes it good enough for one. Unfortunately, I shared this and it wasn't enough for me.
