Coffea Coffee Coffy Coffi Smile Nov 22, 2013

It was a typical Wednesday night, not unlike any other... except I found myself in Bangsar, at a coffee place, after dinner; when I would typically be at home, after a simple dinner nearby, lazing at home.

The name of the establishment almost seemed to echo a subtle subliminal message for me to imbibe their caffeine-laden offerings, yet it was not coffee that I sought, but dessert. Many options were presented, of which memory slips, but the butternut cheesecake, I would never forget.

Soft and smooth cheese cake - predictably typical; with the except of the buttery, nutty butternuts (what else would one except of BUTTERNUT?) that topped the cake so delightfully. It's really straightforwardly brilliant. The cozy, unpretentious ambience also lent to the pleasure... still I'm also convinced that if I had elected to pair my cake with brew, my tastebuds would've been doubly pleased; though my brain would be less so if it found itself conscious at 3am from the caffeine.

Might've been worth the risk. Some other time then.

Breakfast like a boss Smile Nov 22, 2013   (Related Review)

Nutmeg has recently become one of my more regular breakfast places, and for good reason. Drilling beyond the charming "woody" decor and trying-to-be-personal-and-friendly service (props to them for trying, but I'm just not feeling it!), the food is the real draw of this place. With plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of options for breakfast places in Bangsar, competition is stiff and food just has to be up to mark, especially when you're a restaurant that does not serve pork. (Brief note: I've tried at least 3 places in Bangsar, priding themselves on pork offerings, which serve mediocre to terrible food, at bad prices.)

If you've been pining for good smoked salmon, you'd not be disappointed at Nutmeg - I rate this one highly, just behind Bistro a Table and Prime, for a much more attractive price tag. Grilled cherry tomatoes are softened and sweetened to perfection, and sauteed mushrooms are appropriately plump, juicy, and flavourful. This time, I opted for poached eggs, which in retrospect seemed to be a bad idea, due to the difficulty I had lapping up the egg in its gloriously messy form (which was good, otherwise). I opted for fried mac and cheese as one of my sides (in lieu of hash brown, I think), and it was a great choice. Crispy on the outside, and oozy-warm-soft on the inside - accentuated by a dollop of thick tomato breakfast salsa. The sausage was a delight, as I would expect from any breakfast of this form - meaty, chunky, and earthy. I don't know what was inside it, but I opted to steer away from satisfying my curiosity; as the mystery of sausages can be quite "exotic".

There's no losing when you eat here - even if you don't enjoy your meal, at least you automatically qualify as being part of the "in" crowd.

Cheeky little cow Smile Jun 05, 2012

I never knew the cheek of a cow was so big until I tried the braised beef cheek at Villa Danieli. Beef cheek needs to be braised for many hours so it softens up. The great thing about beef cheek is that it is wonderfully tender that you can easily sink in a knife without actually sawing the meat.

The braised beef cheek at Villa Danieli is my first experience in having such a large chunk in a single portion - I usually have it chopped up in a pie or lasagna. Flavour wise, it's very strong with that "beef fat" flavour (which people pay a lot of money for in wagyu, when you can get it cheaper in a beef cheek). Of course, being braised, it comes in a standard done-ness, which is not bloody and is thoroughly cooked, without being tough.

In terms of texture, it was really soft yet pleasantly coarse - it's very unusual for beef to have such texture; it's somewhere between wagyu and short ribs.

The mash did very well to soak up all that excess flavour and keep my stomach full and happy.

Cakes from heaven Smile Jun 03, 2012

Sweet with a distinctive tartness, a raspberry jam topping on their raspberry cheese cake tastes like it's all berries and no artificial fillings; which I think is the case. The cheesecake itself leans towards the softer end; which might be too mushy for some but it's still quite acceptable for me. I think it may be because we didn't have it right out of the fridge - it would probably firm up to perfection if left to cool in a fridge.

The chocolate durian cake is a divine union of two of the most intensely loved flavours in Malaysia. The durian is fresh (tastes like D24), creamy and thick; I don't think it was mixed with anything, and should be pure durian paste. The chocolate is deep and rich, yet still quite sweet. The cake is so rich, half is usually more than enough for me.

Go Loco for Gelato Smile May 02, 2012
Categories : Stall / Warung | Ice Cream / Froyo / Gelato

Most gelato places serve their gelato in scoops. Loco Gelato does it differently, though - they serve theirs by just filling up the cup accordingly. I would think that it serves a purpose - the gelato's texture doesn't suit a scooper; it sort of resembles peanut butter, and I've never seen peanut butter served in a scooper before.

For 9 bucks, we get an option of a mix of 2 flavours. We opted for dolce latte (translation: sweet milk) and another flavour which I can't remember. Basically, dolce latte tasted like caramel, except milkier. Imagine sweetened condensed milk, except with a more caramel-like sweetness.

Definitely one of the better gelatos out there.
