Suffer-on risotto Cry Jul 02, 2012   (Related Review)

To be direct and to the point, let me just warn everyone to keep away from the lamb with saffron risotto. It sounds absolutely delicious, but it really isn't.

The lamb was tender but oddly sour and salty; so much so that it even obscures the lamb's natural gamey scent. It was quite meaty, to its credit, but that doesn't salvage it.

The risotto is undesirably mushy and has no balance to it - just fragrant but otherwise flavourless.

Tuna out of water Cry Jul 02, 2012
Categories : Italian | Café | Pizza/Pasta

The "chef recommendation" (as indicated on the menu) of tuna loaf breakfast set left me feeling very cheated. I couldn't understand how such a dry and tasteless item could be recommended by anyone.

The tuna loaf was basically something like canned tuna, rolled, frozen, and completely desiccated. Really, it was like eating cardboard. I'm not joking - I had to toss it away. Out of the many bad breakfasts I've ever had, not many come close to this.

The rest of the items on the plate were decent, but the horrifying memory of the tuna loaf had shaken my memory of how everything tasted exactly, except for the trauma of consuming something so harshly dry and flavourless.

Three combinations of fail Cry Jul 02, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Food court | Noodles

The meats on display looked very good, and I decides to order the set which had char siew, siew yoke, and roast duck to increase the chance that at least one item tasted great; but Duck King defied the odds and gave me a wholly terrible meal.

The char siew was sweet but very tough, and siew yoke was rubbery and cold, and the duck had almost no meat.

The noodles were like rubber band and the sauce was weak and tasteless. I really didn't expect such a huge fail from one of my favorite food courts that is reputed for its good food.

Nasi lemak fail Cry Jul 02, 2012
Categories : Malaysian variety | Restaurant | Noodles

I love a good nasi lemak, but this is not one of those times which filled me with joy. The rice was hard and cold; the rending was oily and the beef was very tough except for one piece - I struggled with one, swallowed another, and gave up the rest.

Only the sambal was decent with sufficient kick, but too much sweetness and too little anchovy/onion flavour.

Dim sum, lose sum Cry Jul 01, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

Dim sum breakfasts always make me happy. That is, when they are delicious. Royal China ruined it for me.

Unknown random dumpling that I selected from a tray: Juicy but lacked character and any real flavour. Skin was a little dry, sticky, and thick.

The porridge was unexciting and plain - it didn't have any pork taste at all. It's like the kinda white porridge you get from the mixed rice stalls - cooked with water and nothing else.

The char siew pau was sweet on the inside, but a little too dry (as in, the sauce was too viscous).

The "salad" prawn (again, I don't know why Chinese call it "salad") was gooey on the inside (which is alright) but really dry on the outside.

The siew mai tasted very bland and not very juicy.

The yam puff was powdery and the pork wasn't sweet enough to balance the flavour of the yam.

The chee cheong fun was decent, thought the skin was a little thick, and the filling too little. Okay, maybe it wasn't that decent.
