Tong Pak Fu @ Midvalley Megamall OK Jul 03, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Café | Desserts

Most of you might have heard the name Tong Pak Fu before, especially if you have studied about the Chinese history, one of the famous Ming Dynasty scholar. In this post, I will not be talking about that but instead I will introduce you to the award-winning Hong Kong dessert house namely, Tong Pak Fu. This particular dessert house reached the Malaysian shores since last year and are currently offering some of their best quality of hot, cold and western desserts!

Black Glutinous Rice Cream with Coconut Milk RM 5.80
The black glutinous rice cream with coconut milk is probably one of the must try in their menu. Majority of us at the reviews felt that this hot dessert tasted so good that most of us can't stop eating it but we had to stop anyway to make way for the rest of the desserts. Not too sweet and quite thick, just the way I like it so I'm recommending this to all of my readers!

Black Sesame Cream RM 5.80
Next is the black sesame cream. As you can see in the picture above, the texture of the dessert is very thick and smooth, it gives a slight bitter and sweet taste in every scoop. They actually fry, ground and cook the black sesame cream so it's really fresh out of the kitchen. To those who can't take black sesame might want to avoid this! Haha...

Guava Snow Ice RM8.80 regular / RM 11.80 large
The Guava Snow Ice is probably the best selling item in Tong Pak Fu. I couldn't agree more. The guava snow ice is topped with mango sauce and comes with jelly and syrup ball. Pretty refreshing!

Ginger Snow Ice RM 8.80 regular / RM 11.80 large
Next on the snow ice list is the Ginger Snow Ice that has a little stronger taste than the previous Guava Snow Ice. Black pearls, mango cubes and syrup balls at the side, the ginger snow ice gives a slight spiciness at the tip of the tongue. So for those who can't take spicy food at all, don't ever order this unless you really wanted to challenge yourself. Anyway, ginger is believed to be used as one of the ingredient to treat cancer and migraine smile

Tracka Durian Snow Ice RM 11.80 regular / RM 14.80 large
Tip: The Tracka Durian Snow Ice should be ordered as the last snow ice dessert because of the strong durian taste that might overpower the taste of the other snow ice. What I find interesting as well is the cornflakes which they used for this. Imagine having durian and cornflakes together... what a combination! LOL

Overall, although it is slightly pricy but they have some of the desserts that I would crave for my next coming visit.

Tong Pak Fu is also available at SUNWAY GIZA, KLCC, EMPIRE GALLERY, PARADIGM MALL, SETIA CITY MALL, and THE MINES.

Secret Recipe has launched a meatless dining concept outlet called,"Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie" in Tropicana City Mall. It's their first outlet followed by their newly opened second branch at Publika. As one of the largest Malaysia's cakes and cafe chain, renowned for its award-winning cheesecakes and fusion culinary delights are proud to present their very first Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie concept offering diners an intriguing meatless dining experience.

The interior concept of Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie has a garden feel with wooden chairs and tables compared to their normal Secret Recipe cafe.

Upon our arrival, we were briefed about the concept of the Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie and what are dishes that we were to expect through out the food review. We had Rainbow Veggie Roll, Mushroom Bruschetta and Top Hats Pie Tee.

Top Hats Pie Tee (RM9.90)
My favorite was the Top Hats Pie Tee which is a popular Malaysian nyonya snack. Beyond Veggie's version is a refreshing recipe with diced green apple, seedless tomato and shredded water chestnut served in a crispy 'top hat' shell. Recommended if you prefer something taste refreshing with crisp at the same time!

Rainbow Veggie Roll (RM7.90)
Next up is the Rainbow Veggie Roll. It is a homemade dish and is layered with shaved carrots, cabbage, red cabbage, lettuce and topped with pumpkin floss. It's good to eat with the roasted sesame sauce and honey mustard which is served on the side.

Mushroom on Toasted Bruschetta (RM 9.90)
Slice oyster mushroom cooked with homemade cheese sauce and topped with mozzarella cheese served on lightly toasted bread, no one could resist this unless you dislike cheese! That's all for the appetizer, next up are some of the ala carte dishes.

My conclusion: If you are in a vegetarian diet then Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie is the place to go with plenty of food variety. Price wise, it might be slight expensive but at least it's healthy for those who are on a strict diet.

Baker Dave at Sri Hartamas OK Jun 18, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Malaysian variety | Western variety | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Desserts

Baker Dave is the very first cafe and bakery outlet opened at Plaza Damas 3, right opposite of Hartamas Shopping Center and is linked with an overhead bridge. Started off from taking cake orders from home, Baker Dave now offers a value lifestyle proposition of great variety and quality food at affordable prices. The uncompromising quality of food and desserts using quality ingredients, coupled with moderate pricing, compromising of a loyal base of food and cake lovers.

Their specialty? They can customize cakes for any occasion from simple continental cakes to fancy personalised designs. So if you are thinking what kind of cake to get for me for my upcoming birthday (which is on October 11), don't worry, they can customize the cake into any shape or design that you want (preferably a camera DSLR design for me tongue).

Anyway, the interior of Baker Dave is actually quite simple with warm lighting just like any other local bakery shop we can easily be found.

They also offer breakfast, lunch menu, coffee and tea. On request basis, there will be kids activities whereby the kids can do cupcakes decoration for only RM9.90 which include 2 cupcakes, 1 Vitagen drink, sprinkles and cream for the cupcakes.

English Breakfast (RM19.90)
The English Breakfast made up of two sunny side up eggs, two slices of toast with butter and jam, chicken sausages, beef bacons, shiitake mushrooms and also comes with a cup of hot black coffee.

If you prefer to have a heavy breakfast or brunch instead, they do allow their customer to have the set lunch. We got to try two of the lunch set offered by Baker Dave on that day.

First up was the Pasta Marinara which is topped with minced chicken along side with the home-made baked chicken meatballs and broccoli just for RM16.90 and comes with one slice of the cake of the day and a glass of fresh juice. I understand that the chicken meatballs were baked instead of the conventional way of cooking (fry) it but somehow it feels a little dry for my liking.

Next one is the Tumeric Rice (RM16.90) with a sunny side up egg, curry chicken, meatloaf, carrots and peas. The curry chicken was good and flavorful and meatloaf was quite tender. This set also came with one slice of the cake of the day and a glass of fresh juice which I prefer this over the gassy soft drinks. By the way, they claimed that they do not use any MSG in preparing all the dishes.

Ultimate Chocolate RM9.90. The name didn't go wrong with this cake at all. This cake is layered with chocolate fudge, chocolate mousse and chocolate cake.

Apple Crumble Cheesecake RM8.90. One of the best apple crumble cheesecake I had despite the not so appealing look of the cake but I was being told that they spent more time concentrating and working more towards the taste instead of the appearance of their cakes which is lacking in many bakery nowadays.

After having the sweet cakes, there's absolutely no reason why not to sip a glass of hot coffee to balance up our tastebud. If you are somewhere around Sri Hartamas, you can check out Baker Dave for a quick morning meal or tea break.

Mexican Degustation Menu OK Jun 18, 2013
Categories : Mexican | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

We get to try out some of their new Mexican Degustation Menu. Previously, I did a food review for Frontera for their Christmas menu and also I have joined the Inferno Habanero Hot Wing eating challenge.

Top-Shelf Guacamole
I normally don't eat the guacamole, not a fan, but just loved this one. This Top-Shelf Guacamole is served with tortilla sombrero chips. The guacamole is an avocado based sauce filled with diced tomatoes and onions.

Jalapeno Crab Cakes
Next we had the Jalapeno Crab Cakes. This was one of my favorite appetizers served that evening. The fresh crabmeat, picked over, patted dry, mixed with panko (Japanese bread crumbs) and minced jalapeno chiles. The texture is a little rough but I just can't get enough of it.

Jicama Salad
This Jicama Salad reminds me of Thai Mango Salad or Kerabu Manga Thai but more of a radish version of kerabu minus the mango and added a few cuts of oranges, avocado, bell pepper, water chestnut, mint leaves, paprika and cayenne pepper. The perfect salad to increase our appetite for the next dish.

Chicken Enchiladas
For the main, we had the Chicken Enchiladas. Boneless chicken meat which is wrapped inside the corn tortillas and covered with cheese best to eat together with the Mexican rice and baked beans.

Baja-style Fish Tacos
We also had the Baja-style Fish Tacos which is originated in Baja California, Mexico. The fish is deep fried and is served with tacos, lime and cream sauce.

Prawn Chimichanga
Last main, the Prawn Chimichanga. It is served along side with the baked beans, Mexican rice and salad just like the Chicken Enchiladas and the prawns wrapped inside the tortilla topped with cheese sauce was definitely one of the most fantastic Mexican dish I had.

Watermelon Agua Fresca
All those great Mexican food to be washed down with a glass of icy cool Watermelon Agua Fresca. I had this same drink during the Christmas menu review but it was slightly better back then.

Impossible Chocolate Flan
As for desserts, we had the Impossible Chocolate Flan which is made of chocolate cake at the bottom and flan on top, topped with toasted walnuts. For those who love the taste of condensed milk, this is pretty much a dessert made for you.

This Mexican Degustation Menu sells at RM 60++ and only can be ordered or made reservation ahead in time. Some of the dishes are available on ala carte and this set is only applicable for group of 10 pax and above.

Burgertory Food Review Smile May 28, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western variety | Café | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

Last month I went over to Burgertory at SS15 for a food review thanks to Foodirector. It's actually not hard to find the place although it's on the first floor, it's located right above Guardian which one row before Maybank.

Shrooming Bull (RM15.50 - ala carte)

Firstly, let's take a look at the beef burger. The Shrooming Bull burger above filled with Cheddar mild cheese, button mushrooms and 100% grass fed beef. As you can see in the image above, it's actually the Burgertory Fry Combo set that comes with fries, onion rings, Mozzarella cheese stick and their refillable soft drink for an additional of RM9.00.

Mascarpone Curry & Cheese (RM15.00 - ala carte)

This Mascarpone Curry and Cheese burger comes with mild Cheddar cheese, fried egg, onion rings, mascarpone curry sauce & 100% premium pork. The curry sauce is not like those normal curry we used to have but it taste more like Japanese curry type that we can order in Japanese restaurant.

Swine Bacon & Cheese (RM16.00 - ala carte)

One of my favorite, the Swine Bacon and Cheese burger. Comes with mild Cheddar cheese, pork bacon & 100% premium pork. The pork is nicely seasoned and it's juicy. You wouldn't order this if you doesn't have the love for bacon and one thing for sure, you won't regret ordering this tasty burger!

Bacon & Cheese Plus+ (RM24.00 - ala carte

Ingredients are same as the Swine Bacon and Cheese burger but you get to have double pork patty and more cheese! If you just came out from a jungle, this will satisfy your pork craving and if you just want a normal dinner... then you better skip this as this might be too filling for some people.

Burgertory Treasure (RM13.00 - ala carte)

One of the highlights that evening, the Burgertory Treasure. Comes with mild Cheddar cheese & crispy pork lard with 100% premium pork... yes you read it right, it's crispy pork lard!!! All I can say is after having this, you probably might want to think of starting your exercise routine again the next day. It's simply delicious but at the same time satisfying.

No doubt they have one of the best pork burger in town. Just that they need to improve on the buns. Love the free soft drinks refill smile
