I usually have little to complain about Quan's food which is usually quite decent and has a number of hits. But I find their Belacan Fried Rice a bit too heavy and oily for me. The strong sharp taste of belacan was quite salty and a bit fishy. And the rice was dripping with oil literally. And it gave me such a heavy feel that I could only finish half of it. Perhaps the rice was just a bit not as fresh as on other days. The fried egg was as good as usual perhaps the only thing that was ok.

I usually go for sushi or shashimi at Japanese restaurants as I am not really so keen with deep fried stuff. The Assorted Tempura came with two large prawns and vegetables all deep fried with a thick batter.

I didn't really like the thick batter and was expecting the worst but luckily the prawn flesh tasted really fresh and juicy. This helped a lot with dealing with the oily batter. The texture of the batter is too floury and ended up really killing the dish. The fried vegetables fared a little bit better with less batter and tasted a bit sweet but still bearable.

The light soya sauce for dipping has a nice mildly salty taste which complements the tempura well.

The spider roll is actually soft shell crab wrapped in seaweed and sushi rice lightly coated with fish roe. Then a slice of avocado for the topping and finished with cheesy mayonnaise mixed with cod roe. Yummylicious. It really tasted as good as it looks. The crab is crunchy and has a distinctive fragrant flavour from the deep frying. The avocado is buttery and really binds well with the mayonnaise which gave it a sweet tangy taste. Really appetizing.

The thing with chowders is they are supposed to be creamy. But the seafood chowder at Memphis really amazed me. It was not only creamy but also tasted like a dessert with a thick consistency and cheesy taste. There were generous amount of diced seafood in the chowder like squid, clams and crabstick and the chowder has a savoury mildly salty taste. It was really too heavy for me and is actually good enough for a light meal.

Since I love sushi as well as soft shell crab, it's only natural that I would order the Soft Shell Crab Sushi. It really looks amazing when they served it with the soft shell crab and red lettuce leaves jutting out from the sushi and ended up looking like a flower arrangement. The taste was also quite memorable. The crab was crispy and luckily not soft and soggy like some which would be a disaster. And it also tasted really savoury with the crab meat tasting as fresh as you can get and the sweetness of the flesh is a plus. The sushi rice was very nicely packed and there is a light coating of fish roe on the sushi. Mayonnaise is drizzled on the plate for extra flavour. Excellent dish.
