This restaurant is a little bit like Old Town White Coffee except that it has quite a bit of hainanese local favourite food on its menu. Prices are reasonable and service is good.

As we were there with little time to spend, we had the Fried Sausage on Skewers which was not that appealing. The sausage which is fried with batter is a bit too dry and the batter is very thin. The sausage became really tough due to overcooking. I could only get a salty unrefined taste which did nothing to make this dish outstanding. There were mayonnaise and tomato sauce drizzled on it which I did not like as they were too sweet. Not recommended.

Menus are sometimes quite misleading. The food pictures can look very good and then you get the real thing which is a totally different version. That's what happened when I ordered their Hainan Toast. It was over toasted and too dry and the bread is almost burnt. And there was what looked like butter, a tiny piece of it not even melted slapped in between two slices of bread, three in a set. Taste wise, it is totally unacceptable and I had trouble finishing it. There was kaya on the toast too but it was quite bland tasting. The butter is alright but I would have preferred a thicker layer of butter. Overall quite disappointing.

Garlic Fried Rice Cry Aug 17, 2012   (Related Review)

Garlic Fried Rice

Garlic Fried Rice

One of my favourite ingredient is garlic and I can take lots of it in strong doses. So I found the Garlic Fried Rice a little disappointing because I could hardly taste any garlic in it. There was only a tiny hint of the aromatic ingredient. The result was fried rice that tasted just normal like the average fried rice. There was enough flavour to make this fried rice just passable not too salty. It was sufficiently moist from the oil which were used generously perhaps a bit too much. But if you are expecting a heavily flavoured garlicky taste, this is not the dish for you.

Belacan Fried Rice Cry Aug 17, 2012   (Related Review)

Belacan Fried Rice

Belacan Fried Rice

I usually have little to complain about Quan's food which is usually quite decent and has a number of hits. But I find their Belacan Fried Rice a bit too heavy and oily for me. The strong sharp taste of belacan was quite salty and a bit fishy. And the rice was dripping with oil literally. And it gave me such a heavy feel that I could only finish half of it. Perhaps the rice was just a bit not as fresh as on other days. The fried egg was as good as usual perhaps the only thing that was ok.

Signature Dessert Cry Aug 16, 2012

Recently there has been a mushrooming of bubble tea dessert shops in Malaysia so much so that you can get it everywhere you go. Since I have tire of Chatime, I tried Blackball's range to see if they can match their other competitors in taste.

I ordered their Blackball Signature which is grass jelly, yamball, taro, pearl and red beans mixture. I find that the taste is a bit below my expectation. The yam and taro wasn't as chewy as Snowflake (just my opinion of course) and it tastes less sweet. I guess my sweetness tolerance is high but I prefer my desserts that way. The pearl and grass jelly were a bit hard and there is a strong powdery taste which I didn't like. The red beans were too soft and although these provided some taste, overall the dish is just average.

Their Milk Tea with grass jelly is just normal. The tea taste was not strong and there was that powdery taste again from the grass jelly. The sugar level can be adjusted to personal preference so I will not rate on that. The drink is a bit too diluted in my opinion.
