Nonya Food in air con Smile Apr 24, 2016
Categories : Malaysian variety | Restaurant

Located in front of the main stage where all the old folks gather to sing karaoke is this nonya restaurant. It has about 6 tables on the ground floor and some more tables on the second floor but the second floor is warmer.

It was a rather not day and so we choose to get cosy on the first floor. The owner was really friendly and recommended us lots of dishes to try. I don't take spicy foods so it was a bit difficult choosing nonya foods for me.

One thing I learnt about nonya food is that they have a lot of colours on the table.

The food came pretty quickly and everyone was happy with the food.

Fried mushrooms was my favorite. It was very crispy and tasty. Definitely my choice again if I was there.

Just Want Coffee and Waffles Smile Apr 17, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

Located in a Industrial estate about 20 minutes drive from the causeway is Just Want Coffee. Since it is settled in an industrial area, it has a warehouse concept and the land area is pretty huge.

The dining area has two floors. The ground floor has a bar too experience for coffee and baristas to show off their skills.

The cake counter was rather alluring as you waltz through the front door. It is on your left. I immediately had my eyes set on the green tea cake! The food menu was a rather retro and rustic looking paper "magazine". It had advertisements showing how coffee is made and the different types of coffee machines available.
We were seated on the ground floor at the bar top for about 20 minutes while waiting for a table upstairs. We ordered our food and drinks while waiting for a table.

The matcha mouse cake (10.90rm++) was a real treat. It had a lot of matcha on top, but the mousse itself was still quite sweet. A little bit too sweet for my liking. I realized I was sipping my coffee in between bites of this cake as I needed the bitterness of the coffee to offset the sweetness.

Kyto Geimatcha (13rm++) was an interesting tea that smelt like cooked rice. The taste was very subtle but it had a distinct charred taste. It was a very intersting tasting tea, but it wasn't for me.

Butter caramel waffles (12.90++) were truly simple and fantastic on several levels. These aren't belgian waffles, but rather the typical waffles you find in Prima Deli but with a completely different texture. All 4 quadrants are consistently brown with a pale yellow variation in the center, which is the fluffy and cakey goodness sandwiched inside. The crisp exterior was done right with a slight amount of charring. It smelt like a giant cake straight out of the oven was placed in front of me.

Served with a dollop of whipped cream and ice cream in a seperate bowl, which was great, so that the ice cream didn't melt on top of the waffles.  A small saucer of caramel sauce and a slab butter was also presented. You can tell JWC wanted you to try this waffle in several combinations. I tried the waffle on it's own and it amazing, but with the ice cream, and caramel sauce it was heavenly. Or swap out the ice cream try it with a dap of butter. Either ways, JWC has gotten their waffle game to the top with this combination.

Vanilla ice cream was smooth, creamy and milky, with a hint of fragrance. The pairing of the sweet caramel sauce with the ice cream and waffles was suffice for me!

Rose Latte 11.90rm++ - this is the first time I've seen rose petals scattered on top of a latte.  The rose aroma was strong and fragrant. The latte had a tad bitter sweetness along with the smooth milk. I enjoyed this drink to the last sip and at 930pm, I felt more awake than I had been waking up in the morning!!

Overall : Great atmosphere, awesome waffles, cakes, coffee and really attentive staff, we were asked repeatedly by different staff on the feedback on our food and drinks!

Spending per head: Approximately RM30(宵夜)

Satay Lok Lok Smile Mar 25, 2016
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Steamboat/Hotpot

Located at the T-junction of an old Melaka town is Capitol Satay. It has been run by 3 generations and is extremely famous within the region. International food celebrities have visited this place and you will notice all their photos up on the wall!

There are tons of signs saying that Capitol Satay doesn't have any brother or sister stalls elsewhere to remind you that this is the one and only Capitol Satay!

The queue grows pretty quickly here in a shop that only has about 15 tables.

You basically get assigned a table after waiting in line and getting bitten by mosquitos and the will bring you a pot of satay sauce with a concoction of spices.

After which you can go ahead to grab your sticks! It is 1.10rm per stick for all sticks except the prawns kept in another fridge in the back. There pork, quail eggs, fried dough fritters, vegetables and more.

We grabbed quite a huge array of everything and we had 4 pax total.

My favourite were these meat balls that you toss into the magic satay pot and you have to fish them out with the provided scoop. It absorbed all the flavour of the satay sauce completely!

At the end of the meal, someone will count all your sticks and give you the final bill. In our case it was 60+ rm for 4 pax!

Chicken rice Smile Mar 25, 2016
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant

located on a newer stretch of shops is suukee. Most of the shops around it are still vacant and there's a papa rich at the end of the shops. The menu seems to consists of mainly just hainanese chicken and one side dishes but typical breakfast sets like half boiled egg, with toasts and bee hoon are available. But as I had visited on a weekday afternoon at 230pm, almost every table had ordered a chicken.

We ordered half a chicken for 4 pax and it was amazing. The chicken was drizzled with a soya sauce which was both sweet and savoury. The chicken skin was thin with a slight crisp on the edges. There wasn't any fats underneath the skin at all.

The shop is pretty big and airy with a large seating capacity. All the tables are round and great for parties for 6-8 pax. Even though the kopitiam isn't air conditioned, it was pretty airy as there was a cross follow of wind

The rice was fragrant and tasted really good with the sauce underneath the chicken! Here is my portion of rice and chicken.

I ordered a iced tea but it tasted really bland despite all the foam on top of it!

overall: really good chicken rice and we paid 58rm for everything !

Cooling Hong Kong Desserts! Smile Jun 03, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung | Desserts

My friends couldn't stop raving about this dessert shop that they had tried in Hong Kong and since we were now in KL. They were pretty much "die, die must try!"

1. Chewy balls with mango dessert 15rm

So the chewy balls were more like mochi! There simply wasn't enough of them chewy balls! It was definitely chewy and slightly soft and pillowy on the inside! The mango cubes were all sweet. The ice cream was abit frozen and it took awhile, before we could spoon the ice cream with our metal spoons. The shaved mango ice at the bottom, wasn't too sweet and it was almost like a mango slurpee. It was very refreshing and cooling!

2. Coconut ribbon with mango dessert 15rm

The coconut ribbon tasted just like fresh coconut flesh from a fresh coconut! It was sweet, but not artificially sweet. The ribbons were long, and we had difficulty eating them in a decent manner. We ended up slicing them with the metal spoons, to prevent a huge mess!

Between the coconut ribbon and the chewy balls, it would be difficult to decide which was my favourite. I would definitely order both of them again!! But at 15rm a dessert, it is quite pricey!!
