Pin Xiang Seafood Restaurant Smile Jul 25, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Seafood | Noodles

During the day, Pin Xiang offers the famous Ipoh Chicken Rice as well as a huge selections of noodles from Prawn Mee to Wantan Mee. I'm fortunate to visit this shop in the evening to try the home-style Chinese dishes. The ambiance itself is very warm, giving me a homey feel.

Kai Lan with Yam (芋头炒芥兰) @ RM25

The yam and vegetables in this dish actually work, but it is the chunks of yam that has me cloud nine. It is deep-fried but the mushy texture blends well with the vegetables, adding extra sweet flavours into it.

Spare Ribs in “Pou Ging” Sauce (葡京一支骨) @ RM5 per piece

I love pork with generous amount of sauce. The fall-off-the-bone tender ribs are well-suffused with deep-seated sweet, sourish nuances. The creaminess of the sauce is simply irresistible!

Fried Noodle with Big Prawns (生虾炒生面) @ Seasonal Price

If you’re a seafood lover like me, I strongly recommend you this noodle dish perfectly crowned with gigantic prawns in the light, eggy gravy. Each spoonful of crispy rice noodle is not overly gooey, but good enough with hints of seafood sweetness. Very filling and the prawns are firm and fresh!

New A La Carte Menu @ Toh Yuen Smile Jul 25, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Private Party | Special Occasion Dining

Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant is no longer a new icon within the vicinity of Petaling Jaya. Famed for its impressive Dim Sum menu, now it introduces a whole new ala carte menu for both lunch and dinner. Glancing through the menu, I know I'm going to dine like a queen tonight!

Deep Fried Smoked Duck with Fruit Sauce
(果酱酥炸烟熏鸭) @ RM38

One of the key highlights would be my favourite smoked duck with a great helping of tangy fruit sauce on a bed of sliced mangoes. Adding a twist to the local taste buds, the thin layer of meat burst with sweetness from the unique combination of fruits. Delicious!

Sauteed “Gong Bao” Vegetarian Chicken with Yam Ring
(素佛钵炒宫保鸡丁) @ RM60

I almost got deceived by the chicken cubes because it looks and tastes as though it is real chicken meat! The mushy yam uncovers some succulent and crunchy bits of meat and vege, topped with generous amount of cashew nuts. The sauce is quite thick, sweet and salty. Lovely!

Deep Fried Banana with Strawberry & Cheese Cake
酥脆香蕉芝士蛋糕) @ RM30

My favourite cheese cake and strawberry are stuffed into the fritter and deep-fried into golden brown perfection. Beyond the crispy hot skin lies the melting sweet texture, which is truly good and I'd wish to request for more! The dessert is surprisingly not overly sweet, but filled with layers of texture and myriad sweet flavours.

At Tranquerah, I will never miss the signature dessert whenever I visit this place. I even purposely go to this restaurant for their dessert alone, because it is so good and I don't have to travel to Malacca for such authenticity. I am more fond of their old school setting and i can comfortably sit there with my laptop for hours without any disturbance.

Sago Gula Melaka

Being one of the most inventive and vividly luscious Nyonya creations, the tasteless sago pudding when accompanied with rich sweet flavour of sugar palm syrup is probably the best Nyonya dessert on earth! In my opinion, the sago pudding is quite firm and bouncy, with very good texture. The gula melaka on top of it is quite liquid, not too sweet when it goes with the pudding.

Completing a meal with this indulgence is a must for the ultimate dining experience at The Tranquerah!

Bread and Jam @ The Loaf Smile Jun 19, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western variety | Sweets/Snack | Bakery / Cake / Kuih

The Loaf is ready to serve you from 8 am onwards with an array of buns and pastries with the aroma of freshly-brewed coffee for a good start of the day!

The Loaf Cranberry Cheese @ RM3.50

This soft butter rolls dough, when blended with premium dried cranberry and creamy Philadelphia cheese, it just makes me speechless. I fall in love with the melting cheese almost instantly upon the first bite! Lightly sweet and healthy, I love it!

Best-selling Jams

Made from imported and local premium ingredients, The Loaf will never go wrong with their homemade jams. Motoko and Nodoka are amongst the bestsellers, and I prefer the latter one which reveals the natural goodness from the grapefruit along with its tangy flavour. It is not really sweet and goes well with wholegrain bread.

Ficelle Boulangerie & Patisserie  Smile Jun 19, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Burgers / Sandwiches | Sweets/Snack | Bakery / Cake / Kuih

Ficelle is a cafe that serves all kinds of freshly baked breads and pastry as well as the main courses, soup and salad.

Finding a park there on a weekday and even weekends is hellish but surprisingly it was quite ample for me that Sunday I visited this restaurant. Since Ficelle is under the same management as Levain Boulangerie, so the similarities in the setting and servings are easily explained. The place is not as spacious as compared to Levain, with a less varied and narrower selection of food.

Ham and Mushroom Carbonara @ RM 11.80

It is not the ordinary shiitake mushroom here, but I see my favourite button mushroom with sliced ham which tops the plate of spaghetti. Of course, the key component of the carbonara is the sauce itself. Neither too thick nor mild, the sauce is creamy enough with a strong milky and cheesy taste. Oh how can I resist it!

Caramel Brioche @ RM 1.50

It's a really cute-looking cube, topped with icing sugar and filled with caramel cream. The skin is baked into a dark, golden and flaky crust. So rich and tender it is! When it is cut half, it looks similar to a bread, but it has extra additions of butter, egg and milk. The thick caramel makes this a highly-sweetened pastry, but I'll give it a go for once in a while.
