1. Old Rex Cucur @ Jalan Rubber
Old Rex cucur udang has long history from the days where the stall is located at the Old Rex Theatre (now no longer exist and another building, Star Cineplex, stand in its place). The stall is now re-located to Old Rex Cucur Udang Café at Rubber Road, still serving the famous Cucur Udang (Prawn fritters) and many more like sweet potatoes, yam, fish ball, tofu or bean curd – all deep fried to perfection without the oiliness and lots of crispy bites! Comes with side serving of chili and peanut sauce for dipping. Yummy! Back in the days without refrigerator, any excess Durian that is not eaten are preserved with salt, leaving it to be fermented and become what is known as ‘Tempoyak’. This dish in Lepau is stir fried with crispy Pusu or Ikan bilis (anchovies). A delightful dish that is best eaten with rice, without its pungent aroma from the raw Durian fruit itself!3. How about a different style of preparing prawns? Instead of having the usual deep fried or steamed, go for a prawn dish with gravy – Butter Prawns, which has creamy butter and sweet evaporated milk gravy! A place where memories are made where it was a favorite hangout while getting sweet treats. This ice cream still maintains its same décor since 60's or 70's, as well as its menu consisting of cones, sundaes, sandwich or specialties. The ice cream is soft and served with the right amount of sweetness and smooth in texture! Grounded nuts are sprinkled on Sundae for nutty crunch in every spoonful!5. Cangkuk manis or locally known as 'Mani Chai' is a type of shrubs also known as Star Gooseberry or Sweet Leaf. It gives this dish a unique sweet taste, which the name 'Cangkuk Manis' is named for (sweet shrubs). It tastes deliciously good eaten with stir fried eggs! Give this dish a try perhaps you'll fall for it instantly!6. Sarawak Laksa @ Garden Café & Restaurant
One of the busiest place that is always filled with patrons, Garden Café & Restaurant at Golden Arch Shopping Mall offers a variety of meals. One of the most sought after is their Sarawak Laksa. A bowl of flavorful gravy with slivers of chicken, bean sprouts and juicy prawns on top of beehoon (or rice vermicelli) and of course, comes with Sambal Belacan and lime!7. Kolo Mee @ Good Day Food Court, Kenyalang Park
A dish that is well known here in Sarawak, a bowl of Kolo Mee and can be found almost everywhere; but this Kolo Mee stall at a food court called Good Day Food Court is located in this old historical Kenyalang Theatre and Complex Center, where is it popular in the 60's to watch movies here. Noodles tossed in seasonings, topped with minced meat and slices of Char Siu meat with garnishing of chopped green onions and crispy fried shallots. Fix your cravings here!8. Ding Bian Hu @ Peach Garden
A Foochow comfort food, Dian Bing Hu is made from rice flour, with the rice flour water mixture is poured on the rim of the wok and scrapped when firm, thus creating thin, irregular shaped noodle pieces. More ingredients like fish balls, edible black fungus, sliced cuttlefish and minced meat is added. Light soy sauce and pepper is served with Dian Bing Hu and customers add in according to their liking. Indeed a must have when you're here!9. Chinese Barbeque Specialist @ Jalan Padungan
A quaint restaurant at the corner of the shoplot in Padungan, with same old recipe passed down for decades for its well-roasted pork, chicken and duck on display in enclosed glass casing. Go for mixed BBQ plater with rice – it comes with a little of everything: roasted three layer pork, BBQ pork meat, roasted chicken and roasted duck! Served with a plate of rice and dipping sauces, one dark black sweet sauce and the other spicy chili. Taste incredibly great too. Do drop by to this restaurant to taste what they are famous for! Nestled in lush greenery and shady trees is where Summer House is located, with Sarawak Museum just a walking distance away.
