Lunar day for vegetarian food anyone?

For your information, Po Ling Chinese Temple @ Jalan Ampang will be providing free morning breakfast at the temple itself. Fried mihun, fried kuey teow, pumpkin porridge or even vegetarian nasi lemak every morning. You will have to go there and eat and wash/bowl the plates that's all.

So there was one first lunar morning that I felt like taking heavy breakfast and I went to the temple for this!
Their chinese pickled vegetable cooked with groundnut was yummy!!! With a little bit of mihun, satisfied for a perfect morning, wait..they will provide free red beans soup sometimes so yea! PERFECTION.

Price is reasonable. Tastes are good.

Pan Mee soup. At another counter, there are some noodles being offered. I ordered the pan mee soup. It took quite some time to prepare. It has mushroom slices, potato leaves, some crispy vegetarian stuffs. The soup was extremely plain and it almost tasted like water, with some slight saltiness in it. The crispy stuffs were nice though. I do not prefer this as it was too bland for my liking.

Stir fried kangkung. I am very picky with vegetables and choose only certain vegetables. They are a few vegetables varieties in this temple but I do not prefer most of them. So, I took the stir fried kangkung. The vegetables were quite old and not too soft texture. It was bland as it was just being boiled with water. I have to eat with some curry sauce to add some flavour to it.

Another option if you are looking for some local delights like kueh would be the vegetarian yam cake. Even it’s for vegan, am sure you gonna love the taste of the ingredients combination too. It’s made freshly daily where the auntie will cut the steamed cakes proportionally and then packed in the bag for patron’s convenience. The cakes are soft and decently filled with diced yam alongside the relevant seasongs as well as slices of mushroom. When enjoying it, do douse it with some of the inhouse

When enjoying it, do douse it with some of the inhouse condiment, which I believe, is a mixture of the sweet dark sauce and also their special chilli sauce. Yum!

Wo hoo! After some several slices gastronomy trips made, best to have some lighter food so that the tummy could be relieved of its frequent digestion job once while. It’s so happen on the 15th day of the lunar month, which falls on weekend that enable me to make a trip for my favourite vegetarian roll. It isn’t the usual spring roll that you usually seen at night market, but rather a healthy one in bigger portion as well The filling is adequately flavoured with natural ingredients like sengkuang

The filling is adequately flavoured with natural ingredients like sengkuang, carrot and lots of julienned ginger! Never did I taste before so much ginger in a bite, but I suppose I still could handle it pretty well, hehe. The outside skin is actually very smooth and silky, that leads me into thinking that this might be the roll of chee cheong fun that use to wrap the ingredients, albeit slightly thicker. Oh ya, do remember to pair it with the sweet dark sauce when eating it for better flavor enhancement

Vegetarian roast duck. I took a piece of vegetarian roast duck ("zhai siu ngor"). When I bite it, the texture was so hard. So I chose the lighter color parts to bite off, not too easily but it can be bitten off. The texture was chewy and not crispy at all. The darker part I faced much difficulties to bite it off. Although the taste was not too salty, but the texture was a no-no for me.

Mee hoon. That afternoon, I was feeling quite full and do not intend to have rice. Luckily they still have lots of mee hoon (normally it finishes very fast). I poured some curry sauce on to the meehoon to moisten it. The meehoon had carrot and cabbage slices. It was a simple meehoon, not salty, just a bland one, which was good for health. The meehoon was not hard either.

Wantan Mee. The vegetarian version of wantanmee came with char siew, vegetables, fuchuk and a piece of dumpling. The preparation process was a bit slow. The sauce was not too salty, just nice and not too diluted either even though it was mixed with some soup. The char siew was sweet. The dumpling was slightly crispy. Overall, it was a nice bowl of vegetarian wantanmee.

I always like to eat "kwai fa chee" offered by restaurant and this dish is quite expensive as it made of shark fin. I am glad that Po Ling Temple offers the vegetarian version. Glass noodle was used instead of shark fin. It was cooked with egg omelette, mushrooms and carrot slices. The dish was moist and not too salty. The mushrooms were chewy. The carrot slices gave a crunchy texture.

Po Ling Chinese Temple a lot of vegetarian dishes as well as the real green vegetable dishes. I being choosy on vegetables, I took the lady fingers. It was just simply stir-fried lady fingers. Some lady fingers were quite old and quite hard to chew. Some were nicely done, soft and the seeds were crunchy. The taste was just normal, not very salty, in fact it was quite healthy.

Mee hoon. I always patron the vegetarian stalls at Po Ling Temple. Normally I will take white rice or brown rice, but that day I don't feel like taking rice, so I took the fried mee hoon instead. The fried meehoon was really simply, it only consisted beansprout and cabbages. The meehoon was soft and the taste was bland. Definitely had to mix with other gravy to give it additional taste.

Honey coated Pumpkin. This coated pumpkin is one of my favourite dish in the temple. Each pieces of the pumpkin was nicely coated with the sweet coating. It was sticky and the edges were crispy! I like to choose the smaller pieces as these pieces have crispy edges. I have a sweet tooth and I enjoyed this dish very much. The pumpkin was not too soft, just nice texture. The sesame was aromatic.

Popiah. Apart from the stirred fried dishes, they also offer some deep fried stuff. The popiah was wrapped nicely and the fillings were quite thick. Although it was being put on top of the tray for quite a while, it was still very crispy, not too oily. The fillings of sengkuang and carrot was crunchy and with a little peppery taste to it. Overall, it was not too salty and not too sweet, just nice.

Spicy fuchuk. This fuchuk was wrapped in a roll and being cut to pieces. It was stirred fried with cucumbers too. Some pieces were burnt, which in this case I do not enjoyed the burnt parts, it was too black of color. The fuchuk was a bit hard though. The seasonings / gravy of this dish was quite nice, it was spicy yet not too salty. The inner parts of the fuchuk was soft despite the tough outer part.

Curry Mee. Sometimes I was bored with the mixed rice vegetarian food, so I bought the curry kuey teow. It came with vegetarian char siew, long bean, tau fu pok and beansprouts. The curry broth was very thick, powder and it was slightly salty too. It was quite spicy to me too. The char siew was flavourful, the long bean and beansprouts were crunchy. The tau fu pok was soft.
