I had bought a Groupon Voucher for New Shanghai a few months ago. I wanted to take my family members there, so I spent RM 192 (for 6 pax) there, using the Groupon. The first problem came when I wanted to make a booking. I called and called and called AND CALLED but nobody answered (I had to call to make a reservation)I then found their Facebook page, and tried to make a comment there too. I noticed a lot of other people had commented on the same issue (phone not being answered).A little while after posting MY comment, all the other negative comments (about the phone not being answered) were deleted. Great.A few days later I decided to drop by at the restaurant PERSONALLY to make a reservation (because my parents were coming from Sabah!)When I got there, the owner was yelling at his staff and making them cry.Fast forward 3 weeks to yesterday, and we finally arrived (on a Tuesday night, mind you) to our reservation. The place was quite empty, with only 3 other tables occupied. We waited more than 5 minutes for someone to ask us if we'd like tea, and to give us the menu for ordering. The other table was attended to first, and I had to ask them to serve us.Our reservation was for 7.30pm. They had told us "Last call is at 8.30pm".We placed our order (for dim sum buffet) at 7.40 pm (after they finally served us)By 8.05pm, no food had arrived, except for 2 small pieces of deep fried spring rolls. We were worried, because what if we miss the last call and cannot order more food? Finally at 8.10pm, the food arrived. My mother grumbled to the staff that the service was exceptionally slow (Ah yes, only 2 outside staff. The same 2 staff manned the cashier, served food, cleaned up the dishes, refilled your tea). The girl (a young chinese girl) had the audacity to reply "This is actually considered very fast. Usually it is much longer". The way she said it, it seemed like we were supposed to be GRATEFUL for the slow service. Not a good response from staff. *Note, my mother was not shouting or screaming. She just said it to the staff, in a slightly annoyed voice*I am guessing some of the staff have quit from last time. Either bad management, or bad service staff. Either way, we waited too long for our food. The food that arrived, was not spectacular at all. For almost RM 200, I feel like we could have done a lot better elsewhere. Some of the food tasted a little sour, like it had been kept too long. Some of the food was tasteless. Not much tasted fresh.According to their Facebook, they won some 'awards' but I think it's not deserving at all.Ming Room, Grand Imperial, they all win over this chain of restaurants.Sorry but this will be the first and last time I patronise you. continue reading

continue reading

continue reading

continue reading

Visiting two Chinese eateries cultivating a strong reputation, starting with New Shanghai Legend in Publika, an upscale spin-off from Pavilion's New Shanghai.A vast variety of dim sum, served through nightfall, forms the bedrock of the menu here; we love the abalone-topped siew mai, a juicy, flavorsome treat.Pumpkin-&-prawn dumplings. Not bad, but the tiny morsels of pumpkin have scant impact.Whitebait coated with salted egg, a crispy-creamy addiction, heaped high for a mere RM15.Our favorite: the Shanghai Dandan noodles. Might not look remarkable but tastes terrific, thanks to a nuttiness that nicely complements its spiciness.New Shanghai Legend serves wine, but only by the bottle. Reasonable prices though. continue reading
