Maju Junction might be an unlikely location for an impressive Japanese restaurant, but that's what Mikan turned out to be. A mouthwatering sushi platter of salmon belly, hamachi & ikura. Foie gras with king mushrooms in teriyaki sauce. A top-notch treat; three thick, well-prepared slices of goose liver that partnered perfectly with earthy mushrooms and a pleasantly sweet sauce. A bargain for RM38+.

Mikan: Round Two. Seafood croquette. Served fresh and steaming-hot; excellent for snacking. Comfort food: tender, flavorsome beef cheeks in rich, thick Japanese curry. Fish broth. The chunks of (unidentifiable) fish were bony, but the soup tasted healthy. Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc.

Mikan: Round Two. Sashimi platter, featuring amaebi, tai & tako. Mikan lets customers customize their sashimi selection, choosing only the fish & seafood that they want (for a fixed price). Thankfully, everything we ordered for this tasted irreproachable. Jumbo ebi tempura. Some of the most massive prawns around, seemingly more than a foot long. Sashimi is a must have for any Japanese cuisine, and here at Mikan Japanese Cuisine, we were served with two types of sashimi, Tai and Salmon on this rather cute wooden box thingy. I've been known to turn down sashimi in the past, but this round I tried these, and surprisingly it did not have the fishy taste which I was so afraid of. The fresh salmon got the "sea" tasting rather than "fishy" and less saltier compare to smoke salmon.

This dish was called Kaisen Koroge. It was a type of seafood croquette being deep fried. The small breadcrumbed fried food roll containing the mix of seafood inside the fried "ball". It was the right chords for me, as like crunch croquette just oozes out in your mouth tantalizing the taste buds. The cheese was added to make the seafood croquette more creamy and cheesy.

King Prawns in white truffle sauce, now that's a really rich dish if you asked me. White truffle is very expensive very highly esteemed in the market. They taste a bit like mushroom or you could say a meaty version of mushrooms taste. Since the king prawns was so fresh and only being pan-fried, the flesh maintained fabulous taste and sweetness. The presentation of this dish was very tempting too.

We ended the dinner with a small serving of Japanese ice cream with Butternut Pumpkin each. The green tea ice cream and the butternut pumpkin were not sweet. Luckily the red bean on the bottom was sweet. Hence it brought the balance combination as dessert. Probably great things must come in small packages, as the ice cream was really tiny. Overall I would say Mikan Japanese Cuisine in Maju Junction Mall does serve some really fresh and nicely prepared Japanese cuisine.

The Anago Terriyaki is a Fried Sea Eel with terriyaki sauce. It was served on top of the chef special homemade mash potatoes. There was a slice of tomato on the side as the decoration. Even the anago terriyaki dish was fresh, but it was a bit cold and when arrived at our table. But this did not took away the fabulous taste of the anago with the terriyaki sauce that brought little sweet and salty taste.

King Prawn in Truffle sauce is one of the specialities of the restaurant too. The fresh king prawn is being sliced to half and it is added with the Truffle Sauce. The king prawn is being pan fried till perfectionist with the sweet bites from the prawn meat which makes is good. I like the added aroma that the white truffles sauce gave the prawn and also the bit of char-grilled smell.

The Kaisen Korage which is the Seafood croquette is one of my favorite. The fried croquette is being stuffed with lots of seafood which included scallops, prawns crab meat, green soya bean and topped with home made thousand island. The seafood croquette is well made with the perfection and the thousand island sauce which comes together with it is really special. The seafood croquette is soft in the inside and crispy in the outside. the texture is good and it is indeed juicy as well.
