Dirty nelly was giving discounts on selected items on the menu for their lunch and dinner during the merdeka celebrations. I came here for lunch with a colleague of mine and I got the dirty nelly's burger. Each meal comes with a free drink which is also bottomless. The burger was very juicy and the patty stayed put in its position unlike most burgers which the patty slipped off the burger if it is too moist. The fries were too oily for my liking.

Dirty Nelly's has cultivated a reputation as a nice suburban watering hole over the past year, so it's cool to see it venture into the city, where its second branch recently opened at Life Center. Hot, sweet comfort on a cold night: pumpkin and squash broth, thickly blended with nutmeg and topped with vanilla-laced sour cream. Should soothe both the stomach and the spirit. Good ol' British recipes rule at Dirty Nelly's, including the rarely-seen-in-KL beef cobbler, a meaty stew topped with buttery-cheesy scones. A terrific change from, say, shepherd's pie.

Wine is available, but only by the bottle so far.

The food and booze above were consumed on three separate evenings since early May. Why did we keep returning? Because the dish we wanted to order _ Nelly's Belly, spice-braised pork belly _ was repeatedly unavailable. We've given up now; Nelly's Belly and ours are fated to never meet.

One more warning: the music at Dirty Nelly's can get pretty loud, pretty early in the evening.

"William and Kate," wittily named _ the former referring (for reasons unknown) to the asparagus, the latter to the wrapping of butter-sauteed bacon. A harmonious (culinary) union.

Pork chops with apple-cabbage slaw and house-made passion fruit sauce. It's like the chef wondered what he should add to the menu, then thought to himself, "let's give 'em something to really sink their teeth into!"

But most of Dirty Nelly's customers stick to Guinness.

Dirty Nelly's has cultivated a reputation as a nice suburban watering hole over the past year, so it's cool to see it venture into the city, where its second branch recently opened at Life Center. Sliced pork sausages with back bacon, chilies and onions. Sounds like run-of-the-mill pub grub, but it's deliciously executed. Spectacularly juicy, not sickeningly oily. Here comes the parade of pork, kicking off with some succulent ribs. Even the sea bass gets the pork treatment, smothered with bacon

Fish and chips, battered to perfect crispness, with mushy peas, tartar sauce and malt vinegar. The fish was fresh, though the fries buried below were forgettable.

Oh, and the long island iced tea, of course. A bit on the pricey side too.

So typically English to serve meat with eggs... and I like it that way, especially when it's duck egg! At Dirty Nelly's, if there's egg, it's always duck egg. Maybe they also own a duck egg farm or something. The grilled pork thigh is chewy but not tough, and is good for those who prefer a good bite in their pork. The grilled pineapples are smokey and sweet, and complements the plain pork rather interestingly. I notice that pork always goes well with sweet fruits that are cooked.

I've long quested for a good shepherd's pie, but I've not found it at Dirty Nelly's. The mash topping was a bit too powdery for me - I would like it creamier and a little chunky. The minced meat is also too fine and the gravy was too light in consistency - it should be thick enough that be good enough to eat with the mash on its own.Overall, still decent taste but completely off in texture. Not something I would order.

The beef escalope at Dirty Nelly's makes for a good substitute for steak when one isn't quite feeling like cutting steak, or enduring the toughness of (cheaper) thick beef. This pretty much tastes like a black pepper and mushroom steak, but a whole lot thinner. Despite being well done, it's juicy and chewy without being tough or difficult to chew.

This dish sounds totally wrong - "Nelly's Belly"; but it tastes very, very right. The pork belly is extremely melty and juicy, it's unbelievable. Disclaimer: Nelly's Belly has contributed to Marcky's belly and should be taken in moderation, despite extreme urges to gobble up a serving every week (with some Guinness).

There really isn't much to say about this sausage. It's pork, so it gets points for that; but it's nowhere near the chunky goodness of a German pork sausage.Dirty Nelly's serves English food, so I guess this is how the English do it. It's very meaty, but not really as dense as I'd like it. I would just go to a German bar for my sausage fix.

The beef cobbler at Dirty Nelly's is much too salty for my liking. The beef is very tender, and besides the saltiness, the medium-thick gravy is delightful. It is topped with slices of scones (it sound unusual but this is how the English do it!). The scones were a bit too firm and crispy - they should be more buttery and semi-firm.I think it would go great with some unsalted fries and lots of Guinness.

Dirty Nelly's burger used to be my all-time favourite. Weighing in at 300g (patty only!), it's a real whopper. It used to be made of lamb, pork and veal; but now they use beef instead of veal.Despite the using of cheaper beef, they raised the price from RM35 to RM53. I find that the patty is no longer as juicy as before and lacks the character that it once had. Props to them for having bacon and duck egg, but really, I want my veal back... and most importantly, the old price tag.
