We bought groupon vouchers for Korean bbq buffet that included beef but when we got there, no beef was served as they said "since it (the groupon voucher) was cheap, no beef is included". banchan was available for refill for only 3 times despite the traditional practice of unlimited refills for banchan continue reading

Since I did not have a dinner partner today, I invited my colleague to have dinner together. She had a craving for Korean food so we went to the nearest Korean restaurant near our office at Dae Jang Gum. The place was so full of patrons enjoying the BBQ food here. Every table was so full of many plates of side dishes so I was afraid to order too much especially since there were only two of us. My colleague went on an ordering frenzy and ordered the BBQ Beef (RM 62) that came with about 12 big side dishes and also a Kimchi soup. I almost fainted when I saw so many side dishes as I was worried we would waste food if we could not finish all the food. It was a wonderful sight when the waiter served all the side dishes stacked up on the Korean plates, all on one tray! The side dishes, i admit is very delicious and very worth the price. I particularly like the crunchy boiled baby brocollies, delicately served, flower by flower, 3 flowers at a time on a plate. The Korean special omelette, was gently made, in slices, with some chilli or vege/parsley inside. In fact, the omelette here is better than the gigantic ones I had in Korea. The soft tofu was served cold with some sauce on top but this was too normal to mention. My colleague loved the spinach so much that she ordered a second refill of this. We also liked the giant bean sprouts with big sprout head. The bean sprouts and the spinach were very tasty and not oily like the style used by the chap fan chef like to cook. That is why we find Korean food very healthy. The small ikan bilis/anchovies were a delight. They were not even salty and oily like our conventional Malaysian style cooking of ikan bilis. Again, kudos to the Korean healthy cooking style. There is also a big plate of lettuce and spring onions mixed with Kimchi sauce and some soury stuff which was amazing to whet the appetite. My colleague loved the Steamed Egg sidesdish so much, but to me, I prefer the smooth chawanmushi than this non-smooth one that I can make at home. Anyway, it is quite rare that we have something hot like a hot steamed egg as a sidedish.I do not favour the super creamy apple and carrot salad that was made with an overload of mayonnaise. I also did not like the fishcake which happened not to be my favourite food on earth. The BBQ Beef was incredibly cooked by the Burmese waitress. The beef, though in big chunks were cooked medium or rare or fully cooked according to our liking. It was cooked with big onions and also a ladies fingers, something unique for this Korean style. The result was succulent meat that is great to go with the lettuce and some special sauce. This beef set also came with a free rice which we could not finish at all. The Kimchi soup was amazing. It came with Korean glass noodles, a lot of Kimchi and cabbage, beef and tofu. This does wonders for the soul. Each table also has a bottle of Korean tea, which tasted like the one I had in Korea. After we have finished the entire meal, we were served with complimentary dessert - an iced ginger tea which was great after a BBQ.  continue reading

The BBQ grill section of the restaurant has got to be my favourite section of any Korean Restaurant, as we got to actually cook our own meat, be it pork, beef or chicken. That evening we got to try Dae Jang Kem Korean Restaurant's BBQ pork and beef. Check these yummy stuffs below!Grilled to a crisp, without being marinated, just pure pork meat, the Fresh Pork Belly Sliced (Sam Gyob Sal) retained it's original taste which wasn't too bad. I did prefer the marinated version though, but give me another plate of this, and I would gladly clean it up for you. It was crispy enough and went well with the accompanying sauces. If you thought the Fresh Pork Belly Sliced (Sam Gyob Sal) was good, then this Marinated Pork Belly Sliced raises the bar a couple of notches higher. Marinated in some delicious special Korean recipe, after being BBQ'ed on the grill, it came out smelling good and tasted even better! We had some sweet fragrant taste to the meat. Now if only there weren't so much fats in it. continue reading

Dak Bul Gol Ki is a rice set which the main dish is chicken. I did not like this dish very much as the chicken is quite rough. Most likely the chicken part used in this dish is the breast, which is not smooth. The good thing is that is has a lower fat amount in the chicken. Another good point about this dish is that they gave a lot of chicken and a generous amount of kimchi. This dish is quite spicy but when served with the rice it is acceptable.I also liked the nice Korean decorations and ambience in this restaurant which I'm sure would look better at night. This dish costs Rm14.90, and during lunch it would come with drinks, dessert and tea. continue reading

Bulgogi. We were looking for sort of steamboat soup dishes, so we chose this bulgogi. It came in the 2-in-1 pan where the middle is for BBQ and the side for steamboat. It was being cooked at the table behind us. When it was almost done, only the staff move this dish to us. The beef was not too tender and it was being overcooked. The soup was sweet and thick but too bad there was too little soup. continue reading
