While most people here squeal at freezing left-over food for future consumption, or buying foodstuffs in bulk to freeze for future use, in many parts of the world, like the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia, these have been done for generations, for good reasons.
Freezing is possibly the easiest home food preservation method in retaining nutrients, flavors, and colors. There is little difference between eating fresh or frozen food (we aren’t talking about highly processed ones here). In fact, studies have found that fresh or frozen vegetables contain almost the same amounts of vitamins and mineral contents!
Food stays safely edible and fresh
Many foods consist of mostly water, so the water becomes ice when frozen, which helps to preserve freshness. Plus, harmful bacteria’s activity is suspended then, so food won’t spoil for as long as it’s frozen.
Equally tasty, if not better
Frozen produce like peas, corn kernels, edamame, spinach, and berries are actually harvested at their peaks and flash-frozen to maintain flavor and nutrients.
On the other hand, fresh produce in the markets may actually have been picked days before and sitting on the shelves for a while before getting sold. This is unfortunate, because fruit and vegetables lose their goodness with time.
It’s convenient
Fresh ingredients are always on hand — in the freezer, that is — saving you shopping trips. It might also redeem you when certain cravings strike, like frozen blueberries to the rescue for your favorite smoothie when the fruit isn’t in season.
And who doesn’t love the idea of dinner in a snap on busy evenings. Double or triple the recipe for your favorite pasta sauce and divvy up for freezing. When comes time to serve simply boil up some pasta and reheat the sauce. How easy was that!
Saves money
With a freezer you can stock up on and freeze foodstuffs whenever they are on sale, which helps to prolong their shelf-lives. Of course, not all foods are freezable, so check before you do!
Hope these have cleared your doubts about freezing foods. Go ahead and stash foods into the freezer if you need to — surely, they will come in handy in a pinch!
