Farewell to Restoran Seng Lee (Jalan Batai)
2013-12-06
Another old kopitiam is closing down! OpenRice Located at Jalan Batai at Damansara Heights, Restoran Seng Lee is one of the most popular places for lunch in Petaling Jaya. It has been around for more than three decades. The old kopitiam houses three different stalls, offering mouth-watering Pork Noodles, Curry Laksa, Wanton Mee and Char Kway Teow. Visit the place during lunch hours, and you will be surprised to see how packed the kopitiam is with lots of patrons waiting to satisfy their cravings for delicious hawker foods. OpenRice “Most of the customers here are regulars. They like to come here, because we have three good hawker stalls offering different foods. If we only have one good stall, we wouldn’t be able to attract so many people,” explained Khoo Kah Hing, who runs the pork noodles stall. OpenRice The shop lots at Jalan Batai are fully owned by Selangor Properties Berhad. Two months ago, Restoran Seng Lee received a notice from the landlord asking them to shut down as the company is going to redevelop the area by opening a few modern and upscale restaurants. According to rumours, the current shop lot of the kopitiam will be replaced by Alexis Bistro. OpenRice The oldest stall at the shop is Mui Chea Pork Noodles. It is now run by Mui Chea’s son, Khoo. All noodles are freshly cooked to order to ensure the noodles are fresh and piping hot when they reach your table. Priced at RM6 a bowl, the pork noodles are served with a variety of ingredients, including minced pork, sliced pork, pork liver, pork ball and an enticing half-boiled egg. Crispy fried pork lard is also added to enhance the taste. OpenRice “It takes many years of experience to master the skill of balancing the taste of pork noodles, so that the noodles are not too salty or too sweet,” said Khoo. OpenRice Next to Mui Chea Pork Noodles is the popular Curry Laksa stall. The stall has operated for more than two decades. Their Curry Laksa is unique with white curry soup that is similar to that of Penang Curry Noodles. When asked if their Laksa is Penang Laksa, one of the Chan sisters explained that the soup is actually their own creation. OpenRice “We listen to customer feedbacks and keep improving the recipe of the soup to satisfy the taste-buds of our customers,” said Ms. Chan. Aside from Curry Laksa, many patrons also like their Wanton Mee topped with big pieces of char siew that is roasted with charcoal fire until the texture is crispy and succulent. OpenRice OpenRice The third stall is selling Char Kway Teow. The stall used to be operated by Wong Kin Soong, who is famed for his delicious Char Kway Teow full of “wok hei.” Now, his daughter, Lee Ling, has taken his place, offering a slightly dryer version of their famous char kway teow. She is always busy frying the noodles with a large wok to satisfy the demand of customers that keep pouring in. OpenRice OpenRice A truck is parked right in front of the kopitiam selling Penang Rojak. Manned by an old couple, the cart offers delicious Rojak that is made of freshly cut fruits and Chinese crackers. Having worked together for decades, the stalls will relocate to different places after the kopitiam is close at the end of December. Mui Chea Pork Noodles and Char Kway Teow stalls will move together to a restaurant not far from the current location, while the Curry Laksa stall will move to another hawker center. Although Seng Lee will shut down soon, the good news is that we can still sample the same old goodies after they have relocated to new places.
