So highly recommended by the owner of Hyderabad Birjani House (amazing spot), I simply had to check it out. It took 3 attempts to actually get there, 2 of them destroyed by timing or incessant loud construction from the back of the kitchen. Dosa-wise, everything was generally good but there was this bizarre sweet-taste to the actual dosa. Perhaps it was the oil or ghee they cooked it in, but it left a lingering unease.

After the main course, there is of course more selection of deserts, which each of it almost tasted the same to me. Probably differences in texture, but they all tasted really sweet.

In another words, the open kitchen just for the fried stuff alone is usually in front, right next to the array of marinated poultries and seafood. I picked my all time favourite, the fish roe, as well as the fried chicken.

The best thing about the banana leaf rice is that it is a free flow. So it is all you can eat, and the waiters’ kind of just refill with no questions asked.
Upon seated, and ordered, I was served the banana leaf with white rice. More like a mountain of white rice.

Then I waited fairly long for the vegetables, and the curry. One awful thing here is the extremely slow and inattentive service from all the staffs. And trust me; the amount of man power is like a one worker to two tables’ ratio headcount. So I really don’t get what took them so long to bring the vegetables and curry.

So when it was finally here, they serve 4 vegetables and I like 4 of it. What the Indians do is, the rice is drenched with an array of curry; dahl, fish or chicken curry. I extremely love the dahl curry as there was lots of white radish in it and it was really delicious. On top of that, they also serve this side gravy which is also a perfect combination to the banana leaf rice. One is really brine, and one is very rice in coconut milk. Hence these two were not served as “flooding” amount.

Then there is the papadam, which is a thin, crisp Indian preparation sometimes described as a cracker. Also, the Rasam which is a South Indian soup traditional prepared with tamarind juice as base in addition to tomato, chili pepper, Pepper, Cumin and other spices as seasonings.

Hubby and I are also fans of their fried fish. When we see the waiter holding a metal tray on top of his head approaching, we would stop him to get a piece of the fried fish. The fish is marinated with some curry paste before being deep-fried, and the result is a curry flavoured piece of delectable, flaky piece of fish. There were also no fishy smell, definitely thumbs-up!

Hubby will always order the fried chicken as part of his banana leaf rice meal. I was more than willing to share it with him. We would normally order the drumstick / thigh part, and the portion is quite big. I would get the drumstick bit, while hubby chews on the thigh. The chicken is fried well, and the insides are well cooked, which is a good thing as some restaurant serves not fully cooked chicken drumsticks. As an accompaniment to my banana leaf rice, some fried bittergourd is a must. I would normally not take bittergourd, but this fried version definitely did not have any bitterness at all. The bittergourd is dipped in light batter before being fried to golden perfection. It is served on a small plate, and I would usually require at least two servings of this. Crunchy and delectable, it was well worth the money (and calories). A word to the wise, best try to flick out the seeds inside the bittergou

I will always order the mutton masala when I have my banana leaf rice. The waiter will bring a tray of items and I will normally select this. The aromatic herbs cooked with the mutton brings out the best in the meat. The mutton is cut up in bite-sized pieces, with hardly any bones, except for a piece or two. Beware that it can be quite spicy, but the feeling of tongue numbness is definitely worth it as the dish is really top class!

Whenever I feel like having a mound of rice, banana leaf rice is the solution. In Restoran Sri Paandi, once you are seated down, and asks for banana leaf rice, the first thing they will do is to place a banana leaf in front of you. Then, chaos will come in forms of many waiters placing rice, vegetables, curry, papadam on the banan leaf. They would usually have about four types of vegetables at one time. This place is good for authentic Indian banana leaf rice. First experience was an interesting one, once you sit, few people coming with banana leaf, vege, curry, soup, different meat dishes to serve you as if you were the guest of honor – it’s really was a nice feeling. The meat dishes are about RM5 per dish so for those who like variety, don’t get carried away. The dried curry chicken is pretty good. I like the rasam soup, which clears your throat after the meal. A friend likes the salty dried chilli they serve with the rice. Don’t forget to fold the banana leaf the inwards if you like the meal. Other than the banana leaf rice, you should try ‘kutuk paratha’ or mince paratha fried with tomato and egg that looks like char kuey teow. You can add other dishes vege & meat to go with it. After a satisfying meal, get some traditional desserts like the milk candy in front of the shop.
