2014-07-21
Char Kway Teow, Malaysia
Char Kway Teow (CKT) is undoubtedly one of Malaysian’s most favorite hawker foods. In Peninsular Malaysia, CKT can be roughly categorized into two types, the northern and southern versions. The northern or Penang style CKT is relatively whiter and more salty, as fish sauce is usually added during the cooking process, while the southern or Teowchew style CKT is generally darker and sweeter, as the rice noodles are stir-fried with dark and sweet soy sauce. Here, we have selected 10 best Char Kway Teow in the Klang Valley that you wouldn’t want to miss out. (Some of the restaurants mentioned here are not halal.)

9. Aunty Gemuk (pork free) @ Kelana Jaya

Nestled in Restoran Jamal Mohamed, this award-winning stall doesn’t have a name, but most people would refer to it as “Aunty Gemuk”, because it is manned by a fat lady who is famous for her pork-free Char Kway Teow. Her version of CKT is more inclined to Malay version with a spicy and wet taste. The stall has been around for more than 30 years, and 80% of the patrons here are Malay. The business here is good especially when there are football matches at the stadium nearby.

8. Fried Salted Egg Kuey Teow @ Pudu Wai Sek Kai

This humble stall is located in the middle of the street at Pudu Wai Sek Kai. They offer a special version of Char Kway Teow with salted egg yolk. Before cooking, the salted egg yolk is grinded into small particles, so that the salted egg yolk can melt into the noodles when stir-fried, adding an extra fragrance to the taste. Aside from CKT, their Fried Crystal Noodles are also worth trying.

7. O & S Fried Kuay Tiow @ Taman Paramount

Do you prefer Char Kway Teow with chicken or duck egg? Good news is that you can enjoy both versions at this humble CKT stall located at O & S Coffee Shop. This coffee shop is pretty famous in PJ, as it specializes in Penang hawker foods. The stall also offers Penang style CKT prepared using medium-sized prawns, cockles, egg, bean sprouts and chives. Their cockles are perfectly cooked with a tender and juicy texture.

6. Goreng Kuey Teow Tong Shin @ Bandar Puteri Puchong

Originated from a famous CKT stall at Tengkat Tong Shin, the restaurant is now operated by the second generation, offering not only their signature CKT, but also a good selection of Penang hawker fare, such as Prawn Mee, Popiah, Fishball Noodle and Meatball Noodle. The quality of their Char Kway Teow is good and consistent with lots of ingredients, including prawns, cockles, Chinese sausages, egg, bean sprouts and chives.

5. Robert CKT @ Section 17, PJ

Housed in Say Huat Coffee Shop, Robert Char Kway Teow is a must-visit stall for delicious CKT in PJ. The stall is running two shifts. From morning until 3pm, the stall is operated by a foreign worker, while after 3pm, the owner will show up and handle the cooking by himself. Robert’s CKT is stir-fried in typical Penang style with medium-sized prawns, cockles, Chinese sausages, egg, bean sprouts and chives and served on a banana leave.

4. Fried Kuey Teow (Teo Chew) @ Jalan Imbi

I was surprised when the stall’s owner told me that her stall has been around for 46 years! Probably the oldest one among the 10 stalls mentioned here! The stall is now run by the second and third generation. What’s special about their Char Kway Teow is that the noodles are prepared in Teochew style with lots of sweet soy sauce, which makes their CKT darker and richer in taste. The stall is only open at night at the hawker center in front of the Honda Showroom at Jalan Imbi.

3. Lau Wan KueTiau (pork free) @ Kelana Jaya

Apart from Aunty Gemuk, Lau Wan is another famous stall in PJ offering pork-free Char Kway Teow. Lau Wan is the name of the stall’s owner, who has been stir-frying CKT for more than 30 years. The taste of his CKT is superb with good “wok hei”, but his version of CKT is slightly different from the Penang CKT that we normally eat. For example, the prawns are with shells and the cockles are fully cooked to suit the taste-buds of Malay patrons.

2. Tiam Fatt @ Wangsa Maju

This CKT stall is not easy to find, because it is hidden at a dark corner. Just like any good CKT stall, they offer a choice of chicken or duck egg. Opt for the duck egg version if you prefer your CKT to have a stronger and more fragrant taste. What impresses me most is the size of the prawns. The prawns are not only large, but also fresh with a firm and bouncy texture. Try it once, and you will certainly come back for more!

1. Penang Famous Fried Kway Tiao @ Lot 10 Hutong

Probably one of the best yet most expensive CKT in KL. Located at the famous Lot 10 Hutong food court, the stall offers mouth-watering Char Kway Teow with a choice of chicken or duck egg. After placing an order, you will be given a receipt with a number. Be patient and wait for your turn, as the place can be quite packed during lunch hours. Priced at RM12.50 a plate (after tax, duck egg), their CKT is delicious, less oily, and comes with fresh ingredients. Try all of them to satisfy your cravings for Char Kway Teow!
