Calling it Popiah in our own dialect, it is also known as Fresh Spring Roll. The popiah skin is soft, light and thin, wrapping up all the ingredients that are being filled in with. Popiah in the recent years had gone through modernization and it can be seen by using different wrapping styles of egg skin, seaweed, or lettuce. This Popiah stall in KL is not something new, but you’ve heard their name for years too! Started at Imbi market here since 1980’s according to the friendly lady owner, it is another best Popiah stall not to be missed. No doubt you can’t resist not ordering at least two rolls of this popiah. Ingredients like turnips, cucumber, ground peanuts, carrot and something special which it their crispy bits is added in every roll; giving you the maximum crunchiness in every roll!

Started Popiah business in KL since 1970’s until today, their second generation is taking over the business now. This Popiah stall can be spotted easily in Lot 10 Hutong’s food court, where the best of Malaysian’s cuisine locates at. By choosing which popiah skin you would like to have as the base, the owner will then do his part to make a delicious popiah for you. 3 different types of popiah skin they offer, ranging from the original popiah skin, vegetable ‘skin’ or egg skin. Flavorful turnips, bean sprouts and the same main ingredients used, indeed a good choice if you want to get something light and appetizing!

3. Popiah Stall @ Restaurant Ho Ho Sek

Stall located inside this air-conditioned food court, you can spot this Popiah stall in PJ easily be it peak or non-peak hours, this Popiah stall is swamp with patrons that orders for take-away or dine in. Operated for more than 20 over years, this humble uncle serves one of the best traditional Popiah here. The fillings are deliciously good with turnips, chopped fried tofu slices, lettuce, cucumber, fried shallots, sweet sauce and chili sauce. This uncle cooks a big pot of turnips filling and he usually rolls up to 8 rolls of Popiah per time. Upon completion, he then scoops a spoonful of the turnip broth and pour on top of the Popiah. For you who prefer it to be moist, this is surely one of the Popiah stalls in PJ that you need to visit!

4. Eng Ann Poh Piah @ Klang

So many good Chinese cuisine you can get in Klang area besides the famous Bak Kut Teh. At Taman Eng Ann Hawker Stalls, you can easily spot one of the best Popiah stall here. Operated for a long period of time, the ingredients that they use are slightly different. Apart from turnips and the usual ingredient, they added in pork lard and waxed sausage (Lap Cheong) bits. This makes it somewhat more flavorful than any other regular Popiah’s you can get outside. Adding sweet sauce and chili, a delicious roll is ready to be served.

Yes, peranakan style Popiah. A slight different from the normal ones, packed with oomph, and slightly sweeter, you will notice that the fillings is a little bit darker in color. Filled with fresh coriander, lightly fried turnips, cucumbers, bean sprouts, shallots, egg strips and Gula Melaka sweet sauce; its popiah skin is made of egg. The skin is slightly thicker, softer and chewier. Overall, something special that tantalizes your taste buds. Why not?

Another peranakan style popiah, known as Jiu Hu Char. You can find this Popiah in Puchong. This one is served in a plate and patrons have to work on their own wrappings. The turnips are stir-fried with carrots, mushrooms, and another ingredient that brings up another taste – cuttlefish. It is served with Sambal and fresh lettuce for wrapping. Although it is not the ordinary type of popiah (which is wrapped ready when served), have some fun time of your own doing it. Perhaps you’ll find out that you’re a skilled wrapper too.

While you think moist popiah is too common, get something fried instead. A fusion version of popiah a.k.a spring roll, get ready to indulge in a flavorsome Cempedak Spring Roll.
