Situated smack in the middle of housing areas and colleges, SS15 has long been a favourite hangout spot for students and young adults. So, it is unsurprising that the recent wave of burger joints and coffee culture has been flushed up its banks. Besides that, several wallet-friendly eateries have also blossomed to cater to the students’ needs.(Click on the restaurant names for addresses and OpenRice members' reviews.)
Burgertory’s strength lies in its thick and juicy pork patties; the beef and chicken patties are also decent. Patrons can opt to have their burgers a la carte or by set, which comes with fries or apple Waldorf salad for a healthier option. Burgertory is also very innovative with its burgers, with the likes of crunchy pork lard hidden amid a thick slab of pork patty. Also worth mentioning is its Cheesy Bacon Bits Fries which is an overwhelming combination of fries, creamy mushroom sauce, cheddar mild cheese and the ingenious candy bacon bits.
Cosans Coffee is perhaps the cream of the crop among all other caffeine hubs that have flooded SS15 recently. Decent decoration, good coffee, delicious sweets, and simple sandwiches can be expected here. For those who do not take caffeine, plentiful non-caffeinated drinks are also served, such as chocolate drinks, smoothies, and teas. Brownie points are also given for serving coffee past midnight every day.
Jyu Raku is an upper class Japanese eatery serving an extensive range of favourites such as sushi, sashimi, and tempura. Bento is also available for a more value-for-money experience. All in all, one gets what one pays for. Prices are on the high side but justified with the thick cuts of fresh seafood and meat.
For those with budget constraint, this place fits the bill. It is a simple no-frill restaurant that dishes out plates of delicious sushi on a conveyer belt. Each plate only costs RM2 or RM3, which is incredibly hard to believe by today’s standards. Despite floor prices being charged, freshness and serving size are not compromised here. Other than sashimi, sushi, and hand roll, rice bowls donned with ingredients such as salmon and chicken are also available as a fast option to fill the tummy.
Pork dishes hogs the limelight here. Porky renditions are introduced from its appetizers, mains, and even desserts! The Three Little Pigs pork burger is perhaps the star dish here, followed by favourites such as Bangers and Mash, Pork Ribs, and Pork Chops. Asian inspirations are also sprinkled across the menu, such as the crispy fried pork skin and roasted pork. Still wondering how the Hungry Hogs “porkitized” their desserts? Give its Bacon Ice Cream a try!
Despite its resemblance to a mamak, Oregi’s menu is nowhere close to any mamak stalls’. Oregi bears a heavy Middle Eastern influence in its foods and drinks. Order anything lamb and you can hardly go wrong. The lamb stew is a particular favourite with its mouth-tingling spices. Western dishes such as chicken chops, pastas, and grilled fish are also a pleasant affair here, all at affordable prices.
Striving to distinguish itself from the abundance of cafes in town, Coffee Cottage uses cats to capture attentions. Coffee, tea, and cakes are served here. The café is dissected into two, one of which resembles a normal café while the other, called the Cottage, is where the cats are. Food and drinks are allowed in the Cottage where patrons can enjoy their drinks while playing with the cats.
Everything here screams “SUPERSIZE ME!” Its large serving size, extended business hours, and unique coexistence with a bicycle shop proves to be its selling point. The menu itself is also massive, covering most of the popular food and beverages. Perhaps the best bet here would be the pasta with salted egg yolk, a unique blend of the East and the West that proves addictive.
Pairing pancakes with coffee, the joint proves the idea a success. Pancake lovers can find soft, fluffy pancakes here topped with the likes of Nutella, banana, and even longan. Savory pancakes are also available, paired with the likes of steak, chicken, and beef balls. As with most other hipster hangouts in SS15, Tryst also operates with an extended hours.
