Malaysians are no strangers to sushi and are big fans of this Japanese dish. However, in this challenging economic times, some of you may be wondering, where on earth can I find sushi that is not only reasonably priced but tasty as well? Here we offer some ideas of places in and around the Klang Valley where you can get your sushi fix without having to hurt your wallet in the process.

1. Don Kaiten Japanese Restaurant @ Klang

Don Kaiten Japanese Restaurant, Budget Sushi, Sushi, Japanese, Klang
Don Kaiten is a very humble looking Japanese restaurant that features sushi on a Kaiten belt, all for under RM 8 per plate. When we went there at almost 9pm however, the Kaiten belt had been shut down for the day. However, diners can still order delicious sushi from the menu provided. There was also other dishes like Udon and Ramen on offer. The sushi rice here is really delicious, and the staff were very attentive and friendly. Definitely a place to go if you’re living around Klang.

2. Octopus Sushi and Thai @ Wangsa Walk

This particular restaurant in Wangsa Walk mall in KL really surprised us because of their unique menu combination. Who could imagine that Japanese food can be served alongside Thai food? Anyway the fun thing here is that you can sit at their sushi Kaiten belt where their cheapest plate of sushi is RM 2.80, going up all the way to RM8.00. The best thing is, you can bring along friends and family who are in the mood for Tom Yam too!

3. Express Sushi @ Jalan Ampang

Located in a cosy corner of Great Eastern Mall, Jalan Ampang. This Japanese restaurant in KL offers sushi like California rolls, nigari sushi, maki sushi, gunkan and more. Most of these are below RM10 a plate. We tried their salmon and avocado maki and we really loved the subtle avocado taste that blended well with the fresh salmon.

4. Sushi Q @ Mid Valley

Sushi Q isn’t exactly a shop, but more of a stall in the middle of the walkway. It offers a system for easy take away where you can buy pieces of sushi priced from RM1.00- RM2.50 and they will pack it in a clear packet for you to eat on the go. For those who want to eat in, they’ve provided several seats behind the main counter and serve several types of warm soupy ramen.

This is a family run Japanese restaurant in KL that feels really rustic and gives you the impression you’re eating in a small Japanese town. The cosy set-up allows you to order hand rolls, maki sushi and gunkan sushi from the menu, with most of the sushi costing less than RM5, unless your order expensive seafood types like Unagi (eel). There are noodles and rice sets available too for around RM15 each.

This is one of the Japanese restaurant in PJ where the Kaiten belt is always full to the brim with plates and plates of sushi. The pricing here is very simple, with green and beige plates priced at RM2.50 and black or red plates priced at RM3.50. Refillable green tea, which is self-service as well, is RM2 per person. Our favourite dish is the fired Shishamo fish, which although it not a sushi is really delicious, crispy on the outside and full of fish eggs on the inside.

8. Sushi Mentai @ Various Locations

Sushi Mentai has many branches scattered all the Malaysia and is probably to most recognizable brand of budget sushi around. When we visited their Sri Petaling branch, this Japanese restaurant was so crowded we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. This is because they’re really popular as their plates are all either RM1.80 or RM2.80. You will also see sushi being snapped up at the speed of lightning here, so don’t be surprised!

9. Sushi Tomo @ SS2

Sushi Tomo is run by a Korean boss and the Japanese food here carries a very creative touch. Each plate comes with three sushi pieces instead of two and you order the sushi from a menu. They range in price from RM1.90 all the way to RM10.90 for various types. We love the ambience in this Japanese restaurant in PJ as all the seats are built into cubicles, which gives a lot of privacy.

10. Ramen Ten and Shin Tokyo Sushi @ Jalan Semangat, PJ
