Hanare

The makanventure this time around led OpenRicers to an authentic taste of the Japanese sea at Hanare. Here, ocean-fresh seafood is flown in thrice a week from the famous Tsukiji market in Tokyo (the world’s largest wholesale seafood market).

The evening’s highlights were the preparation and savoring of kaiseki, a multicourse Japanese dinner. Appetizers, such as hirobaigai (snail) and baby squid, kicked things off. They were followed by entrées, such as gohan (clay pot rice with beef), shirako (snapper milt), and ankake (donburi with chicken and shrimp). House-made mochi served with wine-poached pear, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream put a sweet ending to the dinner.

Aside from the clicking camera and flashes, there was also an exchange of thoughts among the foodies. The masters behind the food even lent themselves to answering questions from these curious eaters.

The experience had been amazing. It was as though the orders were sent from Malaysia to Japan, and the meal was ready in 36 hours — of course, reservations were necessary to make that happen.
