Deep in the city, there’s a special mamak stall that sells the best roti special. The shop is always hidden until it makes the identity if the shop as a mystery. Most of the customers consist of people who lives in KL that knows the secret stall. The stall was regular and the menus were the same as the other mamak stall along the same road. But what makes it so special?

During my college days, my buddies and I would always craved for a midnight ‘lepak’ place. The problem is our regular mamak stall was always full of other students. That’s when we discovered this special stall.

Regular customer would always call it ‘Mamak Telur Goyang’. Don’t bemistaken. People call it that because the most famous menu of the stall is its Roti Special where the roti canai is cut in small squares and is dipped deep in curry gravy, or what the Malaysians called ‘roti banjir,’ then served along with two half boiled egg dancing in your plate just waiting to be eaten. The price was reasonable, which is RM3.50 per plate. The range of water was normal like other mamak stall but I’d suggest their ‘teh tarik’, because it was full of foam and creamy taste.

There were also other menu on the list but people would mostly ordered the Roti Special. You can opt to eat it with some ‘sambal’ which are full of fried anchovies (ikan bilis) which would totally give your meal some texture.

The environment of this shop was also chilling and relaxing. Most people would come here to chill and enjoy a different view of our beloved City of Kuala Lumpur. Teens and even officers who had just finished their work would come to the stall and eat. The stall was so small but yet the dining tables were arranged alongside the side walk, which actually would give you the old-school buzz of ‘lepaking’ at a mamak stall. What a memory.

Though I can’t say that this stall hadn’t had any downside. First of all, the stall was located at a very packed place so if you are thinking of coming by car, you would probably had to circle the block for a few times before you get any parking. The arrangement of the dining tables were too packed and closed with each other, making the customer felt a little uncomfortable, especially if you are a woman. Plus, because it is near with the city center, they can’t avoid the appearance of beggars. And the beggars there were quite extream to the point of touching and forcing. So people, watch out a little for your precious belonging.

I’d say I wouldn’t recommend women to come here alone. I could get pretty scary along the dark alley. As for the hygiene issue, I’d say that a person with OCD should probably don’t come here. Because the shop was located near the river, there will be some mouse near the rover and other ‘unfriendly’ animals and at times there could be smells coming from the polluted river.

For some Taiwanese feeling, people can come here and eat unique food. The small shop was set up with the concept of Taiwan Street Snack which had original flavor and so delicious. The materials used were pure and fresh and there was never the time when the food was cooked badly.

The main menu of this shop is its dish called Handmade Oyster Mee Sua. The mee sua that is served were handmade and not by any factory. You can guarantee it’s springy texture and splendid taste were truly honest. The gravy was made from soy sauce and corn starch along with other secret ingredient and it has a hint of saltiness, which is a perfect blend for the mee sua. This unique dish is also served with a sprinkle amount of coriander leaves and the freshest, delicious, mouth-watering, tummy grumbling oysters. The juice of the oyster were over whelming and the texture was springy and perfect. It was my most favorite.

But, if you were not a big fan of oyster, do not concern yourself. There is a meal called XXL Crispy Chicken with the price of RM8.00 is where the a large, tender piece of chicken breast were marinated with spices and coated with special flour and crumbs and then deep fried into the most prefect chicken ever. The deep friend chicken are then sprinkled with special spices before being served to the customer. It was most delicious and a complete must try if you e are a chicken lover.

Not to forget there were other amazing side dishes too. Some were Crispy Floss Egg Crepe, Seafood Tempura, Happy Ricebox and the all-time unique, Taiwan owned, Sweet Plum Potato Fries. The drinks variety of this shop is chilled soya milk to blend the taste, or a simple drinking water to preserved the spicy feeling in your mouth.

The price of this small shop was truly reasonable and affordable, with quality foods and great services. Plus the hygiene of this shop deserves a round of applause and a big compliment. So do come, and try these unique snack that will surely make your stomach and tongue happy.

Nasi Ayam Hainan @ Melawati Smile Oct 16, 2015

Categories : Malay | Restaurant | Mixed rice

This classic old chicken rice shop gave you the old-school vibe which would make you think about that delicious home-town shop selling your favourite dish. When I first come to this shop, never did I expect it to be delicious. The shop was regular looking.

But now, I am willing to come here even if I came from Cheras. Just for the special Hainan chicken rice. The shop only sells Hainan Chicken Rice as a main menu and an addition Kailan Ikan Masin as a side dish. There were also regular drinks served with cheap prices so that it will not over shadow the main attraction. The shop was located at Taman Melawati, opposite of the WestStar Art Shop. So if you guys ever want to come here, just input the art shop’s name on the Waze directory. The shop was pretty hidden because the next shop was closed and the signboard was blocked by the trees and the customers. It took me a few round inside the boulevard just to find this shop at first.

Let’s talk about how jam-packed the shop was. At first I thought the shop was unpopular and rarely had any customer. But the customer was an abundance! You may be underestimating the shop because of its look but customers comes here nonstop. Literally. There was time that if you come during peak hour, you might have to wait for a few minutes to get a seat. It was pretty popular among the Melawati area residence. About the shop’s cleanliness, I would rate it with 3 stars of 5 stars. The area itself have some hygiene issue but luckily the shop worker was always cleaning the area. The shop may not be squeaky clean but it also was neat and comfortable. The shop was opened daily at 11.00 am until 6.00pm but is closed on Thursday. This shop is actually my everyday lunch restaurant during my practicum period.

The chicken rice price was truly affordable at the price of RM5.00 per plate. You can even choose which part of chicken you would like. The rice was steamed perfectly with true natural ingredient and not just using any instant seasoning. They did not use any artificial food colouring but instead, using the turmeric to put the colour in. The chicken broth was made for soup and so there was never any usage of seasoning. The taste of chicken was strong and original. The chicken was made Hainan style, which means it is steamed first and then fried with little bit of oil. The friendly and humble chinese aunty would always ask you if you are satisfied with the food for a constant feedback. What is chicken rice if not served with chili sauce and soy sauce? If you went to any food court, the chicken rice would be served with instant chili sauce. But at this special shop, the chili sauce and the soy sauce was fully homemade and the taste was over the top marvelous.

There is not any reason that one would have to not visit this little shop that will truly leave wanting for more. One more great story of how you should never judge a book by its cover.

Classic Country Steak House Smile Oct 15, 2015

What to do when your stomach were craving for some western food to churn? I’d suggest you go to the Classic Country Steak House. The food was terribly awesome and the plates were full to ensure you don’t come home craving for any other snack. The meal varies from a simple chicken chop to the fancy venison steak or some New Zealand beef. There are even a set with Moroccan rice to fill your big o tummy.

Since I was a cheese lover, I’d order the Cowboy Cordon Blue Chicken Chop. The ‘cowboy’ set means it is served with some additional 4 piece of special sausages, all at the total price of RM13.50. You can also alternate the chicken chop with fish and chip or tempura fish and chip. But as a loyal chicken lover, I’d stay with my chicken.

My friend ordered the normal chicken chop and he’s satisfied with the meal because it was marvelous. The chicken meat was cooked perfectly and the size of the chicken was to his favor, and with the price of RM11.50, that was way more affordable than eating at some luxurious joint but the food didn’t make your stomach full. As in the range of water at this shop, there are juices that you can order like carrot juice or orange juice. But I’d say the best combination for our western meal is a simple coke to digest with. Or if you opt for the sky juice, it can preserved the sweet savory taste of the oriental sauce in your mouth. Fancy that, huh?

The location was not so strategic, though. Though it was located near the Titiwangsa LRT station, it was hidden at the end of the street and the parking area was quite limited. If you come during peak hour, the parking was limited. We also packed some nuggets and mushroom soup for supper. I’d definitely come here again to try some different meal. So why don’t you come too?

One more day on the steps of a chicken lover. Today I visited the Ayam Penyet Best franchise located in Aeon AU2 in Keramat area. I was just next to my favourite Uncle Bob Restaurant. The restaurant is in the G floor opposite of Orchid Restaurant.

The threshold were all according to standard with enough labeling of shop’s layout for customer’s ease and comfort. The sink, the toilet and even the trash bin were easily spotted and labelled. They have a systematic system were the waiter would that orders for you and if you have any inquiries and question, you could asked the waiter there. But the waiter is not really customer-friendly.

I have to ask the ingredients of the menu because on that visit, I brought along my friend who were allergic to shrimp a.k.a the all-around famous sambal belacan. I know. Sad.
The restaurant were obviously originated from the neighborhood land, Indonesia. It even had its unique tagline in Indonesian language: “acu cuba try test ayam penyet best ini…” which actually means “come and try this ayam penyet best…”

Obviously we ordered the Signature dish which is Nasi Ayam Penyet set and Lele Penyet for RM9.90 each. I had to minus the sambal belacan for my friend. They also have other unique and authentic Indonesian dish such as Empal Penyet, Bakso Penyet, Gado – Gado, Pecel, Sup Rawon, Dendeng Balado, Rendang Sapi and so mauch more! So if any of you would like to have a taste of Indonesian food, this is the place.

Our food arrives long after we ordered and it was cold. Now it’s time for us to enjoy our meal. The Nasi Ayam Penyet were truthfully a little bit disappointing. In my opinion, the authentic taste of classic spices were not quite absorb into the chicken. As in for the Lele Penyet, which is the same as Nasi Ayam Penyet but the chicken were replaced with catfish in penyet recipe. The Lele were better than the chicken. But some of the fish head were not cook thoroughly.

Not to be a bad critique but I think that a moderate Ayam Penyet Stall serves better taste than this one. the expectation is too high.
